Course Guidelines
A. Course Registration

To register for the course the participants must submit an online registration form
located at either
i) University of San Diego (EDC-X781): http://pce.sandiego.edu or click here
for direct link to the course
or
ii) Ashland University (16/GW EDU 6260 A1):
https://www.ashland.edu/founders/ (IMPORTANT NOTE: Participants
enrolling with Ashland cannot do so until SEP 2015 but must complete
coursework from APR 2015.)
Email michael.herrick@eu.dodea.edu that you have registered (or intend to do so
before the deadline)
USD registration must be completed by 22 APR 15 (10 days after class begins).

B. Course Requirements
a. Participate in at least 3 face-to-face Schoology training sessions, one of which is an
introduction to the learning management system (LMS). (3 hours)
b. Plan for the integration of Schoology into at least 1 course you are scheduled to
teach in SY1516. (4 hours) Planning includes, but is not limited to:
Uploading content into the Resources area;
Creating tests/quizzes; and
Creating assignments.
c. Learn to use the DoDEA E-Learning Portal for self-service training and course
management. (1 hour)
d. Participate in the Discussion Board forum associated with the course by addressing
topics posted by the instructor and commenting on topics posted by other participants
(2 hours)
e. Introduce at least 1 class you teach in SY1516 to Schoology and deliver several
aspects of the course through the LMS. (4 hours)
f. Reflect on the successfulness of your endeavor by (1) writing about it in a 2-3 page
paper, (2) discussing an observed Schoology lesson with the ET, (3) reviewing your
Schoology course with the ET, OR (4) some other mutually agreeable means. (All

written submissions must be done in Google Apps for Education and shared with the
instructor, michael.herrick@student.dodea.edu. Submissions will be reviewed by the
course instructor 06 NOV 15, at the latest.)

C. Course Description
This course focuses on using a learning management system (LMS) to deliver content,
collect assignments, and assess learning. (Schoology, the DoDEA-contracted LMS, will
be used.) The course will be taught in an LMS so that aspects of these systems will be
modeled for participants; participants will have a student role in this course. The
course will be hands-on, requiring participants to create materials for a course they plan
to teach in SY1516; participants will have an admin role in their own course.

E. Name of Course Instructors:

Michael Herrick is the Educational Technologist at Kaiserslautern HS. Michael has


an MS in Applied Computer Science and Technology and a PhD in Educational
Technology. He has been a K-12 teacher of math and technology and has offered
hundreds of hours of training to educators in both these areas.
Beth Rader is the Educational Technologist (ET) at Ramstein HS. Beth has a Master
of Arts in Elementary Ed with an Emphasis in Math. She has taken numerous
technology courses and enjoys helping students and teachers become more proficient
with technology. Prior to becoming an ET, she was an elementary classroom teacher
and a middle school math teacher.
