Expository Writing
o is writing with the purpose of informing the reader about a topic or issue.

How to set out your Expository Text:


Introduction:

Description of topic or issue

(approximately 50 words)

o The author describes a topic by listing characteristics, features, and


examples.
o The author provides background details and information of the topic or
issue.
Body:

Details the Problem

(approximately 150 words)

o The author describes the problem, the effect on the environment, people,
or the future.
o The author includes statistics, evidence and examples (gives authority
and credibility).
o The author has a final sentence that leads into the need for a solution to
the problem.
Solution(s): (approximately 150 words)
o The author describes one or more solutions for the problem, how it would
decrease the problem and the positive impact the solution may have.
o The author includes statistics, evidence and examples (gives authority
and credibility).
o The author has a final sentence that leads into evaluating the
effectiveness of the solution.
Conclusion:

Evaluate the effectiveness of the solution

o The author evaluates the effectiveness of the solution(s) in their opinion.

o The author may consider things like; whether the solution is sustainable,
the cost of the solution, whether society would support the solution,
whether the solution solves part or all of the problem and much more.
o The author may include statistics, evidence or examples from other

o The author leaves the reader with ideas and concepts to think about.
