OCCT 650: Leadership and Occupational Therapy

Personal Leadership Development Plan

Dani Goddard, OTS, CCLS

Leadership Profile:

Personal Statement: During my career and over my lifetime, I hope to empower as many people as I can and
make a difference in the lives of others. I will strive to build a legacy based on kindness, honesty, integrity,
intellect, and loyalty. I hope to always be able to share my vision and my passion with others, leading by
example and never being afraid to take on new challenges while learning along the way. In my personal
life, I will continue to value travel, exploration, and quality time with those I love. I will always strive to
see the beauty in nature and will remember to enjoy and take pleasure in everyday things. I will try not to
take my health, my abilities, or my blessings and opportunities in life for granted. I will work to maintain
balance between my personal and professional lives and will continue to be introspective and thoughtful
while also supporting my clients as well as my friends and family in establishing and reaching their goals.

Mission and/or Vision Statement: My mission is to continue building on my current leadership abilities,
passion for the field of occupational therapy, and desire to help and empower others as I establish and
develop my OT career. My goal is to reach as many people as possible in a meaningful, lasting way. I
envision a world where people will be encouraged to build on their strengths and unique abilities rather than
focusing on their shortcomings; where judgment and marginalization become archaic constructs and
empowerment prevails. I aspire to one day help establish innovative programs to enable access to education
and a path to independence for college students with disabilities. I also hope to continue growing in my role
as an advocate for the profession of OT and for non-pharmacological pain, disease, and lifestyle
management options for clients across the lifespan.

Strengths: strong leadership and interpersonal communication skills; loyal, honest, and trustworthy with a
deep-rooted sense of integrity; introspective; creative; hard-working; driven; compassionate and empathetic;
understanding and patient; passionate and intellectual with a life-long love for learning and exploration;
open-minded and sensitive to the needs of others

Areas for Growth: time management and learning to better delegate responsibilities to others on the team or
who are also in leadership positions; learning to know when to put my own needs before those of others in
order to maintain proper work/life balance and avoid compassion fatigue; always staying present despite
distractions in the environment

Leadership Model and/or Style Selected: the Leadership Challenge (Model the Way, Inspire a Shared
Vision, Challenge the Process*, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart)

o *I believe I am strongest in the Challenging the Process aspect of the Leadership Challenge model.
Though I have no problem exhibiting respect for authority and acting as an integral part of the team,
I can also easily recognize when old systems or ways of doing things should be revised to streamline
or enhance the leadership or service-provision process. I am always courteous, but I am not afraid to
share my thoughts or opinions. I prefer to collaborate with others while leading, and I always value
insight or observations that may differ from my own. I am not afraid to admit that I am wrong if a
better alternative is presented. I am comfortable with change and often see failure as a chance to
grow and learn. It is for this reason that I feel comfortable as a leader within most organizations,
even those which are new or evolving.
