New Year, New Outlook

s we usher in a new year, the coatings industry continues to deal with

a number of challenges. While raw material prices and economic
instability continue to present challenges to the coatings industry,
there is also a sense of optimism that 2013 will see some improvements.
According to a recent study by companiesandmarkets.com, a market
research company, the global coatings market has been forecast to increase
at a compound annual growth rate of 5.46 percent through 2015, with the
industry set to hit 8.7 billion gallons and $107 billion by the year 2017.
According to this study, key factors contributing to growth within the coatings market include the recovery of global economies from the recent economic downturn, rapid industrialization, increasing demand from end-use
sectors such as automotive and construction, rising competition and technological and product developments.
This optimistic sentiment was echoed by coatings manufacturers I interviewed for The Architectural Coatings Market (pg. 24). Architectural
coatings manufacturers reported that 2012 saw an increase in sales and
cited a recovering housing market and improved economy as reasons for
optimism in 2013.
In The Additives Market (pg. 28) associate editor Bridget Klebuar reports that although the additives market continues to feel the effects of
the struggling economy, the market remains competitive with a focus on
developing products that are both economical and effective.

Market Reports

Global Coatings Market to Reach $107 Billion

by 2017, Predicts Companies and Markets

According to Companiesandmarkets.
com, a leading market research company, the global coatings market has been
forecast to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.46 percent
through to 2015, with the industry set to
hit 8.7 billion gallons and $107 billion by
the year 2017.
Other key finding from companiesandmarkets.com:
Key factors contributing to growth
within the painting market include the
recovery of global economies from the
recent economic turmoil, rapid industrialization, increasing demand from
end-use sectors, such as automotive and
construction, the increasing stringency in
regulations, rising competition, growth in
unique formulations, and technological
and product developments.
The recent downturn in the global
economic market has mauled the coatings industry, as was the case with
several other sectors. The global coatings market, as a whole, along with all
major segments witnessed a substantial decline in volume and value sales
during the downturn. However, the
impact of the recession varied among
each segments.
Production within the global coatings market is witnessing a major shift
away from the developed regions of
Europe and the U.S., to the developing economies, such as Asia, comprising Korea, India and China. Sustained
demand from the developed countries,
in addition to the burgeoning demand
from these regions, is contributing to
the overall expansion of the coatings
market worldwide.
The mergers and acquisitions activity that has been witnessed in the
past decade in the coatings industry
has made the big players bigger and
smaller players finding the going extremely tough. Mature markets tend to
form an anti-inflationary environment

and this compels companies to reduce

costs, and at the same time, enhance
productivity. As a result of this, larger
companies are left with no alternative
but to integrate respective operations
into a single entity in order to maintain synergies, cut down on costs and
to jointly initiate R&D and marketing
efforts to increase sales.

IRL Publishes Profile of

the Central American and
Caribbean Paint Industry
IRL has announced the publication of a
new and fully updated edition of its popular Profile of the Central American and
Caribbean Paints Industry.
This report covers the markets for
paints and coatings in eight Central
American countries (Belize, Costa Rica,
El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras,
Mexico, Nicaragua and Panama) and
eight Caribbean countries (Bahamas,
Barbados, Cuba, Dominican Republic,
Haiti, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and Trinidad
and Tobago). It segments each country
market into nine mainstream coatings
sectors for 2011, and also includes overall market forecasts to 2016.
Mexico is by far the largest country market in the Central American/
Caribbean region, accounting for more
than 60 percent of total demand for
paints and coatings.
Guatemala, the Dominican Republic
and Cuba are the second, third and
fourth largest markets respectively, while
Belize, the Bahamas and Barbados are the
smallest.
The market splits almost 70:30 between decorative and industrial paints
and coatings.
Most countries are net importers
of paints and coatings, with the key exceptions being Costa Rica, El Salvador,
Guatemala and Barbados.
The competitive environment is quite
unique to the region, with the largest
players in Central America being Pintuco

of Colombia (which has recently acquired

Vastalux and Grupo Kativo, both based
in Costa Rica but with regional presence),
Comex of Mexico, Grupo Sur of Costa
and Lanco of Puerto Rico. Grupo Solid
of Guatemala is also a strong regional
player in Central America.
The Caribbean market is more
fragmented, with main players including Berger (Asian Paints), Harris Paints
(Barbados),
Brandram-Henderson
(Jamaica), Lanco (Puerto Rico), and
Penta, Sissons and Kaleidoscope of
Trinidad & Tobago.
Cuba is strongly influenced by
Mexican and Spanish paint brands.
Official population statistics give a
per capita paint consumption of 6.6 kg
for the region as a whole, with the highest
levels seen in the Bahamas and Barbados.
Haiti has the lowest paint consumption
per person at only 0.6 kg.
The highest growth rates over the
medium term are expected in Panama,
where investment in expansion of the
Panama Canal is aimed at allowing access to larger vessels. With canal traffic in
the realm of 15,000 vessels per year or
approximately 4 percent of global trade,
Panama already possesses the largest trade
zone in the Western Hemisphere, at Coln
There are several key drivers behind the
expected future growth in the Central
American/Caribbean market:
Reconstruction after the Haitian
earthquake of 2010. Already the poorest
country in the Western Hemisphere with
80 percent of the population living under
the poverty line and 54 percent in abject
poverty, the earthquake inflicted $7.8 billion of damage and caused the countrys
GDP to contract by 5.4 percent in 2010.
Following the earthquake, Haiti received
$4.59 billion in international pledges
for reconstruction, which has proceeded
slowly thus far.

On-going problems for the regional

paint industry include:
Political instability.
Illegal dumping of cheap paints and
coatings, particularly in Central America
e.g. Honduras.

Highly
competitive
environment,
particularly
given
recent acquisition activity this will
squeeze the margins of the smaller
manufacturers
and
may
force further M&A activity, or
even push out some players.
Low levels of industrial development, which limits the market for industrial coatings.
High prices for raw materials.

Indian Decorative Paint

Market to Grow by 15%
During FY 2012-2015,
Predicts RNCOS
Indias decorative paint market is growing
at a healthy rate over the past few years,
according to a report from RNCOS.
Demand from the real-estate sector has
placed the Indian paint industry on a
high growth trajectory. The thrust of
the Indian Government on building up

infrastructure also has helped the industry to grow economically.

According to RNCOS recent report,
Indian Paint Industry Forecast to 2015,
the decorative paint market in India is
anticipated to grow at a CAGR of more
than 15 percent during FY 2012-2015.
Disposable income plays a critical
role in the decorative paint market.
Thus, increase in peoples income will
help the industry to grow. Moreover,
the rural sector has a major share of the
decorative paints segment. Thus, any
benefit to the rural sector for improving the dispensable income is directly
co-related to the growth of the paint
industry. Besides, decorative paints
are marketing savvy products backed
by large advertisement campaigns and
dealership networks. Huge investments
required in setting up a vast marketing
and dealership network, to advertise
and develop a brand over a period of
time will also help the industry to reach
new heights.
The report, Indian Paint Industry
Forecast to 2015, provides a complete
understanding of the paint market of
India. It analyzes the market size of
the total paint industry and its segments in terms of types, raw material,
and product class. They also studied
how the government regulations are
impacting the industry. With a view to
understanding the industrys competitive landscape, it provides profiling of
industrys leading players Asian Paints,
Kansai Nerolac Paints, Berger Paints,
AkzoNobel and Shalimar Paints along
with their product portfolio and financials, which will help clients understand
the market situation and its progress in
the coming years.
Overall, the report contains the vital information that will help clients to
draw up their market strategies and assess opportunity areas in Indias paint
industry.

Study Finds Need to

Reduce Fuel Consumption
Drives Demand for Marine
Coatings
New analysis from Frost & Sullivan,
Strategic Analysis of the Global Market

January 2013 www.coatingsworld.com

Market Reports

Caraibes to set up a new production

facility.
Many of the countries in this region have strong agro-industrial sectors
e.g. sugar, coffee, tobacco, shrimp. These
industries will continue to demnd general
maintenance coatings, albeit on a relatively small scale.
Tourism is an important contributor to many economies, particularly in
the Caribbean. The demand for new
hotels and improved infrastructure will
continue to boost consumption of architectural and protective coatings.
Sweeping economic reforms are
highly anticipated in Cuba in the wake
of leadership changes. These reforms
include opening up the private property market to allow buying and selling, and elimination of the restrictive
monthly ration book. In 2011 President
Raul Castro announced that it would
take at least five years to update Cubas
economic model, including the removal of mass subsidies on basic goods.

for Marine Coatings, finds that

the market earned revenues
of $5,030.1 million in 2011
and estimates this to reach
$10,216.3 million in 2018. The research
covers anti-corrosive, anti-fouling and
foul-release coatings.
According to the study, the global marine coatings industry is poised to sail forward on the growing demand for reduced
fuel consumption in cargo and cruise
ships. Increasingly stringent environmental regulations are boosting the prospects
of high-value, eco-friendly coatings.
Innovation has been the only constant,
with all companies striving to offer ecofriendly products.
The need to lower fuel consumption
is a strong market driver and antifouling
coatings applied to ships hulls offer one
way to combat emissions and reduce fuel
consumption, said Frost and Sullivan
research director Leonidas Dokos. Foulrelease technology, which also results in
substantial fuel savings, is particularly
useful for large cargo ships, which consume a lot of fuel.
Marine coatings manufacturers are
generally conservative in adopting new
practices. However, increasingly stringent environmental legislation, paralleled by customer preference for more
eco-friendly products, is pushing innovation in the market.
Companies are investing in developing eco-friendly products such as
metal-free, anti-fouling coatings, noted Dokos. Most major participants
now offer silicone- or fluororesinbased foul-release products.
While these are positive signs for
the market, it is not expected to be all
smooth sailing. Participants will have
to contend with two major challenges:
projected declines in shipbuilding production and the consolidation of shipping management companies.
Until the beginning of 2014, new ship
building activities are expected to fall.
This will lead to declining volume demands in the near-term. Consolidation of
the shipping management companies will
increase their buying power, while placing additional pressure on marine coatings prices. CW

PPG Receives Favorable IRS

Private Letter Ruling
PPG Industries recently announced that it
has received a favorable private letter ruling from the U.S. Internal Revenue Service
regarding the previously announced separation of its commodity chemicals business and subsequent merger of a newly
formed company owning the commodity
chemicals business (Splitco) with a subsidiary of Georgia Gulf Corporation. The
receipt of the ruling is a closing condition
of the transaction with Georgia Gulf and
an important milestone in the completion
of the transaction. As a result, PPG now
intends to commence its exchange offer
to split off its commodity chemicals business in the near term with the closing of
the exchange offer and merger expected
to occur in late January 2013. The terms
of the exchange offer will be released
upon commencement of the offer.
On July 19, 2012, PPG announced
that it would form a new company by
separating its commodity chemicals business through a spinoff or split-off, and
then immediately merging the business
with Georgia Gulf or a Georgia Gulf

Latin American Maritime Coatings Outlook Rising

by Charles W. Thurston
Latin America Correspondent
cthurston@rodmanmedia.com

he demand for maritime coatings

in Latin America is solidly expanding on new oil and gas activity, on
domestic shipyard investments and on
general seaborne trade growth volumes.
Out of a total $8.9 billion regional paint
and coatings market, maritime coatings
now represent 14 percent, or over $1.2 billion per year, according to a 2012 financial
presentation by Sherwin-Williams, a leading maritime coatings player in the region.
Among international players in the
Brazilian maritime coatings market,
PPGs Sigma Coatings is a leader, along
with Akzo Nobels International Paint
and Sherwin-Williams. Similarly, The
Jotun Group, of Sandefjord, Norway, is
constructing its first Brazilian factory at
Itaipuau, in Rio De Janeiro statealso its
first in Latin Americato better serve the
growing maritime coatings market there.
Globally, new ship building is cooling, but low-cost, high-demand areas like
China and Brazil are exceptions to the
trend. And in the meantime, increased
investments in coatings maintenance
are rising. While the price of oil is keeping maritime vessel fuel costs relatively
high, the demand for increased efficiency
is helping to drive the demand for antifouling coatings in Latin America.
Within the region, Sherwin-Williams
claims the number one maritime coatings market supplier position in Brazil,
Chile and Mexico, along with third position in Ecuador and fifth position in
Argentina, according to a presentation by
Tim Knight, the president of S-W Latin
America coatings, in May.
Among domestic investments in
Brazilian shipbuilding is that of Sete Brasil,
which plans to spend some $27 billion by
2020 to build deep-water drilling vessels for

rent to Petroleos Brasileiros, the national

oil company. Petrobras plans on spending
$224 billion developing new deep-water oil
reserves by 2015. There is currently a shortage of deep water equipment and labor in
Brazil, which is driving up costs.
Among foreign investors in Brazils
shipbuilding market, an estimated
$142 million investment is bringing in
Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V., of
the Netherlands, for the construction
of a new port terminal TX2 at the Au
Superport north of Rio de Janeiro state.
The Au Superport is the largest industrial port complex in Latin America.
Similarly, Norways STX Europe will expand its shipbuilding capacity by setting
up a new shipyard in Fortaleza, in Cear
state, in the northeast, at a cost of $100
million. And Singapores Keppel is building a second shipyard in the country to

16 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

help fulfill some $5 billion worth of new

vessel orders in Brazil.
According to Brazils national maritime
industry association, Sindicato Nacional
da Indstria da Construo e Reparao
Naval e Offshore, or Sinaval, there are 11
new shipyards under construction in the
country, which will raise the current number of 47 by roughly 25 pecent over the near
term. Apart from nearly four-dozen vessels
being built in the country now, Petrobras
future demand includes 50 production platforms, 50 drill rigs, 130 oil tankers and 500
offshore supply vessels.
While maritime coatings imports currently provide 20 to 40 percent of the Brazilian
maritime coatings demand, according to
one Sinaval document, the country is considering local content rules that could reduce
that share, prompting greater local coatings
manufacturing invesments. CW

REACH Requirements for Downstream Communication

he European Unions controversial

REACH legislation on the safety of
chemicals has been challenging chemical producers and their raw material suppliers
since it came into effect five years ago.
Initially the major concern was that
REACHthe registration, evaluation and authorisation of chemicalswould lead to market
withdrawals of key chemicals for some coatings
producers because of the cost of gathering safety data for their registration.
The final number of chemicals being taken
off the market may not be clear until after 2018
when the registration process under REACH,
which is being done in three phases, is due to
be completed.

18 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

Now coatings formulators and their

downstream users are having to deal with
an even bigger anxiety under REACH the
requirement to communicate down the supply chain as precisely and comprehensively as
possible all relevant safety data on registered
chemicals in formulations.
The main vehicle for conveying the safety
information to users will be through expanded
safety data sheets (SDS). These will include exposure scenarios describing how a substance or
mixture of chemicals may be safely handled to
ensure that exposure to them does not adversely affect human health and the environment.
Over 30,000 chemicals a large proportion of them used in coatings will have to be
registered with safety profiles under REACH
with some of the most hazardous being subject to special authorization. The obligation
for downstream communication should result in Europe having one of the worlds best
January 2013

Europe International Coatings Scene

informed coatings markets on the safety
of its chemicals.
It will be a massive and complex task,
as was made clear at a workshop in
November on the issue at the headquarters in Helsinki, Finland, of the European
Chemicals Agency (ECHA), which is responsible for administering REACH.
Full implementation (of the requirements for exposure scenarios) will take
time, said Sophie Mathieu, an environment issue manager, at the meeting where
she spoke on behalf of the Downstream
Users of Chemicals Co-ordination Group
(DUCC), which represents the coatings
and other downstream sectors.
A major difficulty with the drawingup of exposure scenarios for the coatings sector is that the safety data in
REACH registrations refers only to individual substances and not to mixtures
of two or more chemicals as in dispersions, pigment preparations and other
types of coatings formulations.
Although the REACH regulation
stresses that formulators must pass
on to downstream users information
about individual substances through
exposure scenarios it does not give
much detail about how this should be
done with mixtures.
The regulation merely states that with
substances on their own or in mixtures
recommended risk management or control measures should systematically be
conveyed through supply chains to prevent adverse effects on human health or
the environment.
The legal text does not prescribe
how to transmit exposure scenario information for substances in mixtures,
said Mathieu. It does not stipulate, for
example, whether the information should
be added as an annex to the SDS or integrated into the body of the text.
In a draft version of the REACH regulation there was a requirement for safety
assessment of preparations or mixtures.
But EU government representatives decided to delete it on the grounds that
scientific methodologies for assessing
combinations of chemicals were still under development.
Another source of confusion is that
REACH is not the only piece of EU

legislation demanding that safety information be disseminated down the

supply chain.
Eva Lechtenberg-Auffarth of the
hazardous substances management unit
of the German Federal Institute for
Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA),
pointed out that a professional coatings
applicator, for example, has also to take
precautions under occupational health
and safety (OSH), environmental and
product specific regulations. REACH
applies without prejudice of (existing)
OSH and environmental legislation, she
told the meeting.
She also highlighted the dangers
of inconsistent safety information being sent through to end-users mainly
because of lack of knowledge about
downstream
working
conditions.
Chemical producers cannot properly
assess the behaviour of their substances in real mixtures because they do
not know what the other mixtures are
nor do they have detailed information
on how they are used.
Despite knowing about the performance of their mixtures and typical application methods, formulators are often
not aware of specific on-site conditions,
she said.
Another dilemma discussed at the
Helsinki meeting was the different information needs of different operators
in the chain. A coatings producer will,
for example, want detailed data about
substances and risk management measures from upstream dispersion suppliers. But an end-user will desire from a
coatings manufacturer concise, understandable and more risk managementfocused information.
Anita Hillmer, a REACH specialist at the car manufacturer Volkswagen
AG, complained that extended SDSs are
already becoming too complex and too
long because of large quantities of superfluous information.
The European coatings sector,
through its Brussels-based trade association CEPE, has been working on a
more practical and simplified approach
to exposure scenarios.
Sets of standardized exposure scenarios with the focus on what amounts

January 2013 www.coatingsworld.com

to safe use in generic conditions were

an option, Thomas May of DuPont
Performance Coatings, Wuppertal,
Germany, and a CEPE representative,
told the workshop.
He gave as an example a car refinish bodyshop using 300 products from
multiple suppliers with users mixing up
to 10,000 color shades. All products are
used under similar operational conditions
and users will probably not vary (them)
and the risk management measures from
product to product,May said.
Jon Birger Aarnes of Jotun, Norway,
outlined a CEPE case study on a mixture exposure scenario for a protective
coating based on information on all
critical substances in the formulation. Critical substances are defined as
those that determine the risk for one
or more adverse effects via one or more
exposure pathways, such as dermal
contact or inhalation.
Such an exposure scenario can be used
for approximately 30 similar products,
Birger Aarnes said. Among its advantages was its user friendliness and that it
could be fitted on a single page in a SDS
while a disadvantage was that, since it
was based on dominant substances, the
whole mixture was not assessed.
ECHA is now working on a guidance on exposure scenario information
for mixtures, based to a certain extent
on the discussions in the workshop.
Bridget Ginnity of the agencys risk
management identification unit indicated that the key guidelines in the
document would include the use as far
as possible of standardized methods
and that information could be communicated in several ways.
But she warned that exposure scenario
information would have to be updated as
new data relating to risk management
measures and hazards became available.
With research on the safety risks of
mixtures still at a relatively early stage,
the European coatings sector faces the
prospect of having to update continually information in exposure scenarios
in SDSs. It is hoping that this need for
regular revisions will be met through the
introduction of software enabling the job
to be done automatically. CW

pproximately 80 percent of new product innovation fails, highlighting the

challenge that coatings, paints, adhesives, sealants and other specialty chemicals
industry players face in innovating in todays
competitive market landscape. Failed innovation can severely undermine profits and brand
reputations. Conversely, the rewards for successful innovation are substantial.
Harvard Business School studies and mainstream magazines such as Business Week, have
discovered that theres a wide variety of reasons
why new products fail. These reasons include:
Under-investing in sales & marketing and /
or not inspiring channel partners;
Not addressing customers needs (e.g.,
having an engineering focus rather than
a market focus);
Poorly defining the target market and/or
poorly positioning the product;
Not clearly communicating the products
benefits;
Bringing to market products that require
ancillary products or services;
Introducing a product in the wrong part of
the adoption curve;
Extending the brand too far beyond its established equities.
Other reasons include creating a disconnect
between promise and delivery:
High level executive push of an idea that
does not fit the targeted market.
Overestimated market size.
Ineffective promotion, including use message, which may have used misleading or
confusing marketing message about the
product, its features or its use.
Not understanding the target market segment and the branding process that would
provide the most value for that segment.
Incorrectly pricedtoo high and too low.
Excessive research and/or product development costs.

Underestimating or not correctly understanding competitive activity or retaliatory

response.
Poor entry timing.
Misleading market research that did not
accurately reflect the actual consumers behavior for the targeted segment.
Conducted marketing research and ignored those findings.
Key channel partners were not involved,
informed, or both.

key to a long-term successful product

contribution. Without opening into a
long-drawn-out discussion of which type
of market research is better for uncovering current and unmet customer needs, it
is sufficient to say that a well-conceived
upfront market research can go a long
way in addressing these known dynamics.
So where does that leave us? There
are product introduction challenges that
can be partially addressed through good

old market research and other factors

ranging from fickle consumers through
winning / losing streaks. However, another factor exists . . . . . , and thats corporate culture.
Business Week observed, that organizations deep-rooted in Six Sigma and other efficiency frameworks find the messy
nature of innovation, unnatural. Many
consider innovation an initiative rather
than a core competency. They dont foster a culture of candor, let alone risk taking. Product flops are just that failures
and have no redeeming value because
wisdom loops havent been formalized.
The middle manager also includes another stock character: the risk adverse senior
executive who never met a decision that
couldnt be avoided.
The innovator must have a proactive
role. If innovators dont push back hard
to ask, if not answer, the difficult questions regarding why the product might
fail then they share some of the fault if
introduction does fail. Innovation, like
branding, is integrated: it requires both a
great product idea and the market validation of that idea.
The one of the most important elements of this Success/Failure consideration, CHEMARK has been left out
intentionally . . . the definition of Success
and Failure. CW

Using these potential causes of a product or brand failure may help to avoid
committing those same errors. Learning
from these lessons can be beneficial to
avoid some of these pitfalls and increase
the chance for success when you launch
that next product or brand.
Launch is always a good term to use
when considering bringing forth a new
product. Consider the oft-used comparison of a product launch to a spaceship
rocket launch. If unchecked, we are off
by one degree when we launch a rocket
to Mars, we will miss it by over a million miles.
However, our experience strongly indicates upfront accurate market research

IPaint Protecting the P&C Industrys Intellectual Assets

How Much Is That Trade Secret Worth?

by Steve McDaniel, JD, PhD
Technology Litigators

he law imposes a value standard

on trade secrets. A trade secret is
valuable (in one rendition of such
laws) and thus protectable if it gives its
owner an opportunity to obtain an advantage over competitors who do not
know or use it. It does not say how valuable, it just establishes that it is valuable
if it meets this criterion. Certainly, courts
appear very willing to deny protection to
any alleged trade secret that is deemed
to be valueless. How much are our
corporate trade secrets worth? thus becomes a very important question under
a variety of business and legal scenarios
restraining orders, injuctions, licenses,
mergers, and overall company worth.
When is it the right time to determine
the worth of your trade secrets? That
is a little tougher, and it is
most certainly is a question to
be handled on a case by case
basis. For instance, it may be
that your customer lists are
undoubtedly valuable to you
and thereby qualify as a trade
secret. Were they to be stolen,
while it would take an edge
off your competitiveness, it
might not do so to an extent
that it would undermine your
whole operation. So, it might
be prudent to wait until you
must valuate these sorts of
trade secrets. On the other hand, your
latest and greatest formulation tweaks
that are about to be launched into your
newest resin system to boost your sales
over a competitor may be so valuable
that it would be hard to place a number on the trade secrets they embody. In
the latter case, it might be prudent to
arm yourself here and now with greaterthan-$$$,$$$,$$$ valuations in order to
be ready to respond rapidly to threats

of misappropriation or opportunities to
sell or license to third parties.
There certainly are times that you
will be required to valuate your trade
secret assets. If you are a successful
plaintiff in a trade secret lawsuit, then
you will be required with reasonable
certainty to prove the damage caused
by the defendants misappropriation.
There is a standard that courts require
in such proofs and that is one of reasonableness (versus speculative). So,
lets imagine two courtroom scenarios
and ask ourselves which is more likely
to convince the fact finder (a judge or a
jury) that we should be awarded our estimated damages. SCENARIO ONE
We sue a competitor who we can show
stole our trade secrets. We win, he loses.
Now we bring in an outside expert who
reviews our files and extracts a number
out of our financials that he swears attribute our increased sales directly to

have our accounting department track

a line item expressly to determine the
impact of the trade secret improvements on our product sales. At trial,
we dont put an outside expert witness
on the stand, rather we put the head
of our accounting department. That
is, the contest becomes our be-spectacled accountant simply reciting his
dutiful number crunching, versus their
high-dollar expert tap dancing around
the hard cold factual numbers. Which
would be more compelling if you were
deciding the truth?
There are tried and true methods for
placing a value on your trade secret assets. Loss to the trade secret owner is
often determined by profits lost due to
the misappropriation by a defendant
competitor. These sorts of calculations
need not wait on the actual infringement. They can be determined hypothetically by a scientifically conducted
survey of customers of a particular product. So, for instance, a customer survey can
ask what price the customer
would be willing to pay for
a sole source of a new product, versus what price that
customer would pay if there
were two, three, or more such
sources for comparable product. This sort of analysis can
be used not only for predicting
actual losses to a infringer, but
also the anticipated price erosion caused by unfair competition. More importantly in the case of
yet to be launched products, such studies
can be used to convince a court to award
probable profits. It can also be used to
establish fair market value for use in negotiations for licenses, mergers, acquisitions and sales of a company.
Though more difficult to prove prophetically, another measure of the worth
of a trade secret is by estimating unjust
enrichment. In this way of measuring

the existence of our trade secrets. He
is countered by the defendants expert
who conversely swears that there was a
vanishingly small impact of these trade
secrets on plaintiffs bottom line. The
decision for the fact finder becomes
one of determining which expert is
lying the most (he assumes they are
both lying). SCENARIO TWO At

value, a trade secret owner seeks to be

awarded all of the net profits made by
a misappropriator who wrongfully used
the trade secrets. It is possible to actually be awarded 100% of such ill-gotten
spoils. Yet another measure is estimating
royalties that would have to be paid in
a hypothetical license agreement where
the trade secret owner reluctantly grants
an interest in its secrets. To do this right,
one needs to examine the surrounding
circumstances for hints of how such give
and take might actually occur. So, you
might consider what effect will be caused
to the competitive posture between the
two parties to the negotiation, or what
the terms of similar licenses have been, or
the actual costs of development and protection of the trade secret you incurred,
or how many uses of and what value to

the new found knowledge may it give the

hypothetical licensee.
While we are on the topic of licensing, lets not forget to address the age-old
pig-in-a-poke problem that plagues
trade secret licensing. This problem arises
when a prospective licensee starts asking
what is the true value of a trade secret it
is interested in licensing. It doesnt want
to pay for something that is valueless, and
you are hesitant to fully divulge the selling price. If the licensor has historically
tracked the value of a trade secret in its
operations, it can set its price more reliably and verifiably, if needs be.
What are the take-home-lessons for us
in the P&C industry? Essentially they are
these. First, if weve done our business
properly, we have identified our trade secrets and have a fairly good idea of which

January 2013 www.coatingsworld.com

are critical to our operations using an audit or similar process. On those we have
deemed to be critical, we need to evaluate
the advisability of determining a baseline
value for them. Where it is likely that
these critical assets might be the subject
of litigation or an asset to be variously
assigned to another party via contract,
it will be prudent for us to have values
at the ready. And, there are well-known
methods to get these valuations.
It kinda boils down to this. If youre
ahead of the game (you are the trade secret owner), stay ahead of the game (by
knowing exactly what your trade secrets
are and what theyre worth), or put another way . . . . One and one is two, and
two and two is four, and five will get you
ten if you know how to work it! . . . the

Recovery in the housing market and an improving economy offer bright spots for
architectural coatings manufacturers.

spoke with reported that overall, 2012 showed improvements in sales and demand. Several factors have contributed to this increased demand, including an improvement in the
U.S. housing market and overall economy.
The interior architectural coatings market has shown a
positive upward trend through 2012 as the housing market
and economy are starting to recover, said Sean Morris, brand
manager at Valspar. This recovery is giving consumers more
confidence in investing in new home purchases and home improvement projects such as painting. We foresee this upward
trend continuing through 2013.
The third quarter was a solid quarter for Sherwin-Williams
in terms of both sales and profit improvement, Chris Connor,
chairman and CEO, The Sherwin-Williams Company said at
a recent Q3 earnings call. Consolidated sales increased almost five percent, despite soft market conditions and currency

headwinds across most of our non-domestic markets. We also

had to overcome the diminishing effect from last years price increases and a strong revenue growth comparison from the third
quarter of last year. Despite that, many of the financial metrics,
notably the $2.6 billion in sales for the quarter, $235 million in
net income and $2.24 earnings per share, are high-water marks
for any quarter in our companys history. Year to date, our flowthrough on operating income is over 31 percent.
To date, paint and coatings demand in our domestic businesses has been resilient, continued Connor. We remain optimistic that U.S. architectural paint market volumes, primarily
in the residential segments, will remain positive in the fourth
quarter of 2012 and well beyond. And domestic demand for
most industrial coatings will continue to expand. Our outlook
for fourth quarter 2012 is for consolidated net sales to increase
in the mid-single digits compared to last years fourth quarter.

lines on interior products in 2012. The professional painting
market has improved over the past 12 months for all products
in general, and some projects began to break loose driven by
favorable construction interest rates, said Mark Zielinski, vice
president of sales, Kelly-Moore. We remain hopeful that the
market trends continue into the new year. As new residential
housing continues to rebound, even with lower volumes than in
2006, the interior product sales will continue to improve.
Consumers as a whole are becoming more educated in their
purchasing decisions and are spending more time researching/
gathering information regarding their interior paint choice. As
such, customers have come to expect a high level of service and
performance from their architectural coatings. Not only are they
looking for a premium quality
paint, they are also looking for
guidance during their painting
journey and assurance that they
will be confident in their purchase decision, said Morris.
Valspar offers a number of
tools to help, such as an online
virtual painter, paint calculator
and a full online color palette
calculator; premium products
such as Valspar Signature Paint
and primer in One with Hi-Def
Advanced Color and also assures your purchase selection
with the Valspar Love Your
Color Guarantee where is a
customer does not love their
first color choice, Valspar will
replace it with up to two gallons of another color.
In flats, the consumer
wants a paint that is washable
and stain resistant, said Dave
Heiligenthal, Dunn-Edwards product manager. In the nonflats, consumers want paints that are scrubbable and block
resistant. The painting contractor is more concerned with the
products spread rate, hide, touch-up performance and ease-ofuse in flats. In the non-flats, contractors are looking for paints
that flow and level, adhere to difficult to paint surfaces and are
uniform in sheen.
According to Karl Schmitt, vice president marketing research
and design at Sherwin-Williams, for interior coatings, customers are looking for quality of the overall finished appearance,
easy cleanup and maintenance, great coverage, soil and stain
resistance, ease of application, color accuracy and appeal, good
hiding, low odor and the ability to address environmental and
air quality concerns. The latest technologies being developed
are those which do the best job of offering great performance
with low or zero VOC compounds, he added. Utilization of
alternate raw materials is one way Sherwin-Williams achieves
strong product performance at low or zero VOC levels.

Kelly-Moore is beginning to produce all interior lines from

premium goods to production labels in zero-VOC formulas.
The indoor air quality and near-odorless application seems
to lead the demand for new construction projects and repaint
work, said Zielinski. New formulas can achieve best in class
performance through formulation, which was not possible in
the past.
Another important aspect of architectural coatings is staying ahead of the curve when it comes to color trends. Coatings
manufacturers devote a considerable amount of time and money
in predicting what will be the next hot color.
Colors for 2012 will become fresher and cleaner, almost
pastel-like, said Mary Lawlor, manager of color marketing,
Kelly-Moore.
Mid-toned
blues and blue greens with
a mid-century modern influence will dominate the palette.
Soft yellows and rosy pinks,
along with clear reds and navy.
Neutrals will continue to transition toward cooler grays.
In 2013, Valspar Paint will
reveal three color trend palettes
- Simple Delights, Gathered
Stories and Electric Noir - with
colors ranging from lighthearted pinks to dusky blues
and glowing ambers. For the
year ahead, we are working
toward capturing a happy and
meaningful life at home, said
Sue Kim of Valspar. Despite
an unpredictable future, we
are taking control of our lives
at home by rearranging and
making changes. Embrace this
movement by adding a sense of
unexpected delight to every corner of your home through a display of colors and design.
According to Dunn-Edwards, color will be expanding in
four directions in the upcoming year for architectural coatings. Consumers can expect bold strokes of color and happier color going from the darker shades weve been seeing to
mid-tone ranges for 2013, said Sara McLean, Dunn-Edwards
color marketing manager. For neutrals, we will be seeing more
tinted whites with spots of color to highlight these tints from
the Impressionist era. Well also see color reminiscent of the
Industrial Age and postmodern aesthetic with strong pigmentation machine coloring, lacquered brights and powdered pastels.
Thirdly, we see color pushing the limits of artistic boundaries as
we continue to explore the global reach of color and design.
Well see these bold hues mixing together in fresh takes on
color combinations and we also see a hint of Old-World coloring with the upcoming Winter Olympics in Russia in 2014 and
the FIFA Cup in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2014. And lastly, well

also see color reminding us of the Southwestern and mid-century modern roots and resort-style coloring of the 30s through the
60s; pastels, powdered, retro and all around fun.
Sherwin-Williams 2013 color of the year, Aloe (SW 6464),
is described as Midcentury meets 21st century. With a hint of
mint and lots of moxie, this is no ordinary pastel, said Jackie
Jordan, director of color marketing, Sherwin-Williams. Aloe
is funky and glamorous, demure and free-spirited. While Aloes
vibe can verge on retro, when paired with caviar blacks, crisp
whites or soft grays, suddenly Aloe has a new soul and attitude.
Following sneak-peaks of Aloe in fashion and European design
shows, its full potential is now ready to be realized. Aloe is featured in Sherwin-Williams colormix 2013, four palettes exploring the dichotomies of simple versus complex and light versus
dark to find unexpected, compelling harmonies.

The Latest Product Offerings

Sherwin-Williams has recently launched a number of new products. Emerald Interior Paint delivers exceptional hide, durability and washability with a smooth, beautiful appearance, said
Schmitt. It has reduced odor compared to conventional coatings and anti-microbial properties that inhibit the growth of

interior walls. Multi-Purpose Zero VOC Latex Primers strong
adhesion properties and new formulation make it the ideal partner for topcoats in both interior and exterior applications, according to the company.
In 2012, Dunn-Edwards launched several new or new and
improved products. Starting with our interior ultra premium
paints, Suprema 10 (Flat) and Suprema 20 (Velvet) were improved to provide even better touch-up performance, hide,
burnish resistance and washability, said Heiligenthal. These
two paints were already great, but have been made even better. Suprema products are ideally suited for use on high-end
residential projects. Our exterior ultra premium, Evershield
also has been improved in the flat, velvet and eggshell sheens.

Evershield, already a paint that provided maximum protection

against UV and exterior exposure, now has better water repellency than competitive ultra premium brands. By using the
latest resin technology, we were also able to improve resistance
to damaging UV exposure, resulting in better color and sheen
retention, as well as improved wood grain-crack resistance.
Evershield products are designed for use on high end residential projects, or any project where maximum performance and
protection is required.
Dunn-Edwards introduced a new interior/exterior, ultra-low
VOC multi-surface primer, Ultra-Grip Select, designed for use
on multiple surfaces, including wood, galvanized metal, masonry and drywall. Ultra-Grip Select exhibits outstanding adhesion
and enamel hold-out and very good stain blocking, according to
the company. Ultra-Grip Select is ideally suited for use on residential and commercial projects. Additionally, Dunn-Edwards
added an Eggshell sheen to its Contractors Edge Maintenance
line of paints, complimenting the flat and semi-gloss. These
paints are ideally suited for apartment repaint projects, where
economy and performance are a necessity.
Dunn-Edwards also launched Acri-Hues, a professional line
of exterior, ultra-low VOC paints available in a 100% acrylic
flat, acrylic eggshell and semi-gloss. This new line of paints exhibits excellent dirt pick-up resistance, hide and block resistance
combined with exceptional application performance, added
Heiligenthal. These new products are ideally suited for use on
residential and commercial projects, such as single-family and
multi-tenant housing, schools, hotels and hospitals.
Dunn-Edwards launched a new line of high performance
paints called Ultrashield. This new line of paints is available
in a multi-surface primer, low sheen and gloss finish, as well
as a direct-to-metal (DTM) semi-gloss and gray metal primer.
Ultrashield is an interior/exterior zero VOC, low odor line of
paints that is ideal for use in residential or commercial projects,
as well as light to moderate industrial applications. Because
it is low odor, it can be used in occupied spaces such as offices, schools and hospitals. Dunn-Edwards launched Acri-Wall
Ready-To-Use Interior Flat, a paint that exhibits excellent touchup and very good hide. It applies easily, exhibits sheen uniformity and can be applied to new drywall. This new interior flat is
designed for use on residential and commercial projects.
Kelly-Moore introduced a line of heat reflective paints, Enviro
Coat Reflective, for exterior applications in 2012, addressing
energy savings possibilities through coatings. These colors in
Kelly-Moores Enviro Coat Reflective paint, help reflect some of
the infrared heat from the suns rays away from the exterior vertical walls, even when applying desirable mid-tone colors. These
are functionally-green paints, by limiting the heat transferred to
the inner living space, resulting in possibly fewer air-conditioning cycles necessary to maintain indoor temperature.
Kelly-Moore just introduced a line of commercial interior
and exterior products to address smooth drywall applications,
with the touch-up characteristics that contractors need. The
production line of zero VOC paints is scheduled to be introduced to the housing market in Spring of 2013. CW

Lifestory Research Releases 2012 Residential New Home Shopper Brand Study
The brand of paint used in a new home can influence shoppers
perception of quality and their decision to buy, according to a
national poll of nearly 10,000 households by Lifestory Research.
The Lifestory Research 2012 Residential New Home Shopper Brand Study evaluates consumer attitudes from 9,565
households across several different product classifications, including paint, to determine how brands influence home-shopping behavior. Behr brand paint ranks highest in brand awareness, perceptions of quality, importance of product class brand
and overall impression of the brand manufacturer, according to
survey results.
Furthermore, 58 percent of home shoppers indicate the
brand of paint impacts how they evaluate the purchase of the
home. Many sellers do not consider the importance that paint
brands play in a home buyers decision criteria, said Lifestory
Research president and CEO Eric Snider. We find that sharing
the brand name of the paint used in the home could play an
incremental role in the ultimate decision a consumer makes in
regards to a home purchase. While we do not believe any customer makes a purchase decision solely on the paint brand, the
results suggest that the inclusion of the paint brand in the sales
process of a home could add value to the overall assessment of
a homes quality.
Lifestory Researchs series of national investigations focuses
on how brands influence the purchase behavior of home owners. We have seen a fundamental shift in consumer psychology
that has occurred in response to the massive social revolution
that has taken place over the last several years, Snider said.
Consumers are no longer referencing customer advocacy organizations for product information; instead, people are turning
to their peers, friends and digital social networks to garner opinions. As a result, we have seen brands rise in importance in the
consumer purchase process.
New-home shoppers perceptions of paint brands averages
113 on a 400 point scale. Shoppers evaluated 18 paint brands
along four dimensions: brand awareness, perceptions of quality,
importance of brand and impression of brand.
Behr ranks highest on the brand index with a score of 232
and performs particularly well in all four dimensions of brand equity, survey results indicate. Following Behr in the rankings are
Sherwin Williams (211), Glidden (176), Benjamin Moore (157),
Dutch Boy (141), Ralph Lauren (117), Dunn-Edwards (106), KellyMoore (92), Pittsburg (87), Frazee (82), Pratt and Lambert (72),
Kwal (71), Parker (64), Duron (58), Monarch (57), Color Wheel (52)
and DeVoe & Reynolds (41).
Lifestory Research found that 50 percent of the quality rating
of a paint brand could be explained by the amount of people
who could recall the brand unaided, which was directly tied to
the consumers perception of quality. For more information on

Additives Market

REPORT

Bridget Klebaur, Associate Editor

2012 Recap
As we progress into 2013, the additives market continues to
feel the effects of the struggling economy. Additives play an
important role in the paint and coatings industry, and offer
a range of purposes including enhanced adhesion of paint,
preventing growth of mildew, and improving overall characteristics and properties of paint. However, due to the slow
economy and decreased demand, the additives market has
suffered this past year.
Ralf Taube, regional marketing manager for architectural
coatings at Eastman Chemical Corporation explained, The
worldwide economic situation understandably increases the
short-term focus on profitability and market share. At the
same time, companies must continue investing in innovation
and improved functionality of their products. Many of the attractive opportunities for innovation and growth are driven by
compliance to the continued trends towards low odor and improved indoor air quality, while others stem from a desire for
product differentiation and enhanced functionality. Eastman
Chemical has been proactive in helping our customers meet
these needs through the addition of low odor and low emission coalescents, Optifilm enhancer 300 and Optifilm enhancer
400, to our portfolio of coalescents and with our low VOC
open time additive, Optifilm additive OT1200. We continue to
see strong interest and demand globally for our Optifilm family of compliant products.
Echoing this sentiment was Sebastien Taillemite, business director, additives, Arkema Coating Resins who said, The additive market is experiencing a slow down due to lower demand
in the coating industry. Depending on the geographies and the
end-market, this slow down is more or less pronounced.
Despite the tough market, especially in Europe, Jeremy Austin,
business development manager, Cray Valley Hydrocarbon
Specialty Chemicals expressed some positive improvement in
North America and Asia.
Ron Levitt, regional sales leader, Shamrock Technologies,
found that the additives market remained competitive this year,
with the focus on creating products for consumers that were
both economical and effective.
Customer mergers and acquisitions have limited the
amount of opportunities available to us so we are charged with

developing products that are not only technically superior, but

are also economically feasible. We are constantly looking at
new raw materials in an effort to improve formulas and bring a
higher value to the customer, he said.
Dale MacDonald, vice president, coatings additives,
Ashland Specialty Ingredients added that although the tough
economic times continue to have an effect on the additives
market, Ashland strives to meet the needs of the customer with
constant innovations.
The markets in China and India continue to show growth
albeit at a slower rate; the construction market in North America
has started to see a slight improvement, but Europe has been
significantly impacted by the overall financial crisis. Ashland
has made significant investments in emerging markets of Brazil,
China, and India in manufacturing and regional laboratories to
support our customers and their growth, he said.
W. Brian Smith, vice president, Troy Corporation also found
that the market in Asia led the way as one of the biggest sources
of growth, while North America experienced some improvement and Europe continued to struggle.
The marketplace overall remains competitive, and the advantage has gone to performance suppliers who offer multifunctional additives that perform the job of several products in one,
he said.
According to Toni-Raye Gizzo, marketing manager, Micro
Powders Inc., the wax additives market fared especially well.
In our area of sales of wax additives to the coatings market
have exceeded our forecasts for the last two years, she said.
We have been able to secure a significant amount of new business in waterborne coatings with several new products designed
specifically for these challenging applications.
Raw material prices also tend to affect the additives market, however it seems that there was not too much of an effect
in 2012.
Our raw materials have begun to stabilize after a prolonged
period of variability and uncertainty, explained Jeremy Austin,
Cray Valley HSC.
When choosing additives it is important to consider different characteristics to ensure the best performance. Jim Stange,
Dow Corning Corporation, explained, it is important to consider additives that offer good cost in use value propositions. In

many cases, formulators may be able to reduce the overall costs
as well as formulation complexity by utilizing a silicone additive that can be added at half or even one fourth the level of an
organic additive for that same purpose. Even though a silicone
additives initial cost may be more, they are often high in actives
content and the low usage levels may save costs.
Rich Letasi, product marketing group, Shamrock
Technologies, agreed that performance played a significant role
in choosing additives, as well as economic considerations.
For Shamrocks type of products, PTFE and specialty waxes, abrasion, rub, mar, scuff, and block resistance along with
water repellency are some of the key performance features.
Economics also come in to play. The right balance between performance and value must also be considered, he explained.
Convenience, performance improvement, and assisting
the customer in capturing value in the market are of the utmost importance for formulators when choosing an additive.
Sustainability also remained a driving force for most customers.
Low VOC regulations and low odor needs have put more
importance on the role of multifunctional additives to improve
the performance of todays water based architectural coatings.
Low odor formulations are more important than low VOC in
most of the emerging markets, MacDonald added.
Environmentally friendly options as well as safety are important to the future of the market as well as strong considerations
for Troy Company when choosing additives.
Choosing performance additives that provide green characteristics, such as minimized environmental persistence low
toxicity, and safe handling attributes will pay dividends over
time as environmental and safety regulations will become more
stringent in the future, Smith said.

New Technologies
Expansions in technology for additives in paint and coatings
are being developed based on the changing needs and objectives
of the market. Shamrock Technologies has focused on special
requirements that require a generation of specialty additives.
The paint and coatings industry requires specialty additives
that push the performance requirements beyond traditional
definition of coatings: high temperature resistance, long lasting
corrosion resistance, smart coatings stimuli responsive. These
are no longer Sci-fi topics, they are real business and emerging technologies, said Alex Radu, product marketing group,
Shamrock Technologies.
Dow Corning Corporation is developing additives that can
reduce the overall cost and complexity of the formulation based
on the demands of the market.
Many of our additives can be used to replace multiple
additives in a formulation, explained Stange, For example,
our recently launched Dow Corning 205SL Additive offers
both slip and leveling properties as well as hand feel and defoaming potential.
Arkema Coating Resins use of organic rheological additives
is replacing inorganic agents.
The main drivers for this technology shift are the better

performance in terms of viscosity stability, anti-settling and

sag resistance, said Taillemite. Furthermore with the current
trend to go to higher solids, organic additives should continue to
displace bentones which may not work as well with high solid
coatings and risk lowering application performance.
Eastman Chemical Company saw a continued trend towards compliance in terms of the latest technologies for additives. In addition to this, they saw a trend towards low odor and
emission, particularly in Asia Pacific and Europe, triggered by
certain limitations. This led to the development of an increased
interest in their low odor coalescent aid Eastman Optifilm enhancer OE300.
Jeffrey Brown, global marketing manager, Dow Coatings
Materials, noticed an increased interest in solvent free HEUR
(hydrophobically-modified ethylene oxide-based urethanes),
which are thickeners that can be used in very low-VOC formulations. Dow Coating Materials have developed several new
technologies to support this.
Dow Coating Material developed Acid Suppression
Technology to enable low VOC HEUR thickeners without
the use of solvents or added surfactants, said Brown. Acid
Suppression Technology enables HEUR thickeners to be supplied at low viscosity (<2000 cP) and low pH, and uses the
higher pH typical in waterborne paints to trigger the thickening mechanism only after the rheology modifier has been added
to the paint. The end result is an efficient and easy-to-handle
low-VOC HEUR thickener that contains no added solvent or
surfactant.
Micro Powders Inc. predicted an increase in water-based
paints, which already account for 80 percent of the architectural
coatings market. Waterborne architectural paint that contains
the lowest possible VOC content is the new trend in the market,
continued Gizzo.
Micro Powders has devoted considerable resources into
developing a series of novel polymeric matting additives with
low absorption that allow for easier incorporation. These
polymeric types can offer formulation benefits in terms of matting efficiency, rheological stability, smoothness, and wet scrub
resistance, she said.
In addition to this development, there has been an increased
interest demand in Micro Powders oxidized and modified polyethylenes, which offer stability in waterborne coatings and are
designed to provide wet scrub resistance and smoothness, can be
easily incorporated and provide in-can stability.
Cray Valley HSC aimed to keep up with a changing industry,
and regarded pigment substitutions, loading and cost as its most
important objectives.
Troy Corporation keeps its focus on going green, as its latest technologies are multifunctional additives that are VOC and
APE free.
Troy recently launched Troysol 382, a multifunctional,
silicone-free wetting additive that promotes strong dynamic surface tension reduction in aqueous systems, said Smith.
Another recent addition to Troys Z line of performance
additives is Trosol Z372, a high performance universal

New Additives Launched in 2012

2012 brought many new additives to the coatings market. Dow
Corning launched several additives programs this past year, including The Dow Corning 100F Additive, a flurosilicone antifoam for high solids formulations in both solventborne and UV
Coatings. Dow also released a family of superwetters including
The Dow Corning 500W, Dow Corning 501W, Dow Corning
502W and Dow Corning 67.
Dow Coatings Corporation released their Acrysol RM-995
Rheology Modifier this year, which is a second generation, lowVOC HEUR based on Acid Suppression Technology that offers
the features and benefits of traditional HEUR chemistry plus a
balance of sag resistance and flow, increased resistance to viscosity loss with colorant addition.
According to Jeffrey Brown of Dow Coatings Corporation,
their plan to launch a new zero-VOC capable KU builder based
on Acid Suppression Technology is underway for early 2013.
Micro Powders Inc. announced three new products this
year, including AquaMatte 31, a high density oxidized polyolefin designed to impart uniform gloss reduction and burnish
resistance to waterborne paint and coatings; Microspersion
31AQ-50, a 50% solids aqueous dispersion of micronized high
density polylefin wax that provides uniform matte effect in waterborne printing inks, paints and coatings; and PropylMatte
450, an economical low density micronized polypropylene
wax designed to provide consistent matting effect in all types
of paint and coatings.
Shamrock Technologies launched three new products
recently, Black Sheep SST3PS, Black Sheep SST3PT, and
AquaFLON 91.
The Black Sheep series of micronized PTFE provides the
same performance of our SST3 at great cost reduction. These
recycled, pigmented products can be used in printing inks, coatings as well as lubricants. AquaFLON 91 is a 60% water dispersion of a specially engineered pigmented PTFE. AquaFLON
91 offers maximum abrasion resistance and is ideal for dark
and black-pigmented inks and coatings, said Roy Pe, product
marketing group.
Cray Valley recently launched Crayvallac LV, a rheolofical additive for solvent-free epoxy and polyurethane coatings.
Crayvallac LV is designed for demanding protective and marine
paints, and can be used in very high solid coatings.
Another product released by Arkema this year was the
Crayvallac Flow-450, which is a non-silicone based leveling
agent for wood, plastic, and metal coatings. Crayvallac Flow450 contains defoaming properties and is easily compatible
in many systems. Arkemas subsidiary Coatex also released
Bumper Technology, a new proprietary dispersing technology

platform to assist formulators in reducing titanium dioxide level

in coatings.
Jeremy Austin of Cray Valley HSC announced plans for
2013.We are bringing online a hydrogenated hydrocarbon
resin plant to complement our existing HCR portfolio,
Austin said.
Ashland Specialty Ingredients plans to launch Natrosol
Performax, patent pending, as part of their line of Natrosol
hydroxyethylcellulose.
Natrosol Performax comprises a range of hydroxyethylcellulose thickeners that delivers unprecedented process flexibility
and quality control to paint manufacturers, said MacDonald.
The patented technology triggers rapid and complete dispersion in any water-based medium, even under low shear
conditions. This allows manufacturers to add HEC in dry
form at any point of the manufacturing process, eliminating
extra process steps like the preparation of pre-slurries or dissolutions of HEC, saving operational costs. The end result is
a faster, more efficient, less costly production process and
better paint quality.

Mergers and Joint Ventures

Coatex, a subsidiary of Arkema, acquired an acrylic additives and emulsions production site from the Brazilian company Resicryl this year, explained Amber Goodyear, Marketing
Manager, Coatex. The aim is to develop the site to manufacture
the full range of Arkemas rheology additives and waterborne
emulsions for the mineral industry, paper, construction, water
treatment, paint and adhesives, and cosmetics markets.
Another merger that happened in 2012 came with the announcement of Eastman Chemical Company completing its
acquisition of Solutia Inc. Ralf Taube, Eastman Chemical
Company explained that the acquisition supports Eastmans
objectives to increase revenue and profit margins by expanding
geographically especially in the emerging markets.
Ashland Specialty Ingredients acquired ISP this year as well,
bringing together two different suppliers as one company.
With the addition of ISP, a much broader portfolio of additive technologies exists at Ashland to help our customers win in
their markets, MacDonald said.

2013: Looking ahead

Despite the tough market, the focus continues to be on improving products and new innovation.
A major innovation focus is on lowering and striving
to completely eliminate VOCs and odor in a can of paint.
This includes developing additives without added solvents or
materials of concern that help paint formulators reach their
targets of low, ultra-low, or zero VOC paints that comply
with new regulations and increasingly tougher environmental
labeling programs, said Brown.
New innovations in additives will play a big role in achieving long term VOC and regulatory targets, while at the same
time maintaining or improving the application, appearance, and
film performance of paints. CW

Pigments Market

REPORT

While still sluggish, growth for pigment manufacturers will be fueled by new product
introductions.
Kerry Pianoforte, Editor

lthough the pigments market still is facing challenges related to raw material prices and the economy, there are
some indications that 2013 will see improvements.
The pigments market continues to trend upward particularly
when viewed against the recession years, said Robert Poemer,
business unit leader, Heucotech, Ltd. The percentage improvement in 2012 was also larger than that of 2011, but again the
increases are relatively small. The performance also varied significantly by the sector of the coatings business. As in 2011, the sector with the most improved performance was automotive where
we have seen positive growth for the last three years. The building
sector is showing some signs of recovery but it cannot be termed
a significant recover at this point. Again, the major questions for
building sector are when will we see a return to normalcy and
what will the definition of the new normalcy be?
Sun Chemical Performance Pigments saw a positive upswing
in the global pigments market in 2012, but still not to pre-recession levels. We faced lower demand in Europe due to the economic downturn and stronger demand in the U.S., South America
and Asia, said Mehran Yazdani, vice president, marketing, performance pigments, Sun Chemical. As a leading global pigment
manufacturer, we are optimistic that Sun Chemical Performance
Pigments will overcome global economic challenges and see continued growth for the pigments market in 2013.
For Lansco Colors, January 2012 was a strong month and
great start to the year. Growth slowed after this, particularly
in the second half of they year, but overall our customers did
well in 2012, said Frank Lavieri, executive vice president and
general manager, Lansco Colors.
Generally speaking, 2012 was a challenging year for the
pigments market, said Li Wu, technical manager, Trust Chem.
Sales were especially soft in Europe. Worldwide we have seen
a steady drop in demand for pigments for publication inks. The
soft markets has put added pressure on pricing.
Overall, the year 2012 was a good year for coatings industry sales, according to Poemer. The year started out

with relatively robust sales through the summer months and

then a slight slowdown for the balance of 2012, he said.
Heubachs sales for our line of high performance pigments
was up slightly in 2012 with the positive driver being sales
to the automotive market and soft sales to the architectural/
building market soft. For 2013, we do anticipate growth
along the lines of 4-5 percent. A good percentage of our
growth will be fueled by the introduction of new products
into our high performance line of pigments. However, this
growth could be significantly impacted if the building sector
building recovers more than anticipated or automotive slows.
However, we dont anticipate major changes in either for the
foreseeable future.
Instead of relying on improvements in the still-sluggish economy, pigment makers are looking at new products to fuel growth.
While we are hopeful for improvement in the economy
in 2013, we are not relying on it for continued growth, said
Lavieri. We have launched several exciting new products in
2012 as we will in 2013. Additionally, we have added more personnel and laboratory equipment to continue to bring value to
our customers.
We did not see improvements in demand in any of our markets in 2012, said Wu. We are not optimistic we will see any
significant improvement in the coatings market in 2013, however we do expect to continue to grow our sales through new
business gained from competitors.

Major trends and challenges

The year 2011 was a frustrating one for the pigment industry both for suppliers and customers. Availability on a significant number of pigments with subsequent pricing increases
were relatively prevalent, said Poemer. The year 2012 showed
increased availability across a large number of products and
therefore caused pricing to soften somewhat. For 2013, it appears the situation will remain relatively stable with respect to
supply and demand.

FEATURE Pigments Market Report

Sun Chemical reported that one major trend continues to be the
strong positive usage of high performance and effect pigments in virtually every market. Another key trend and challenge we saw in
2012 was the sustained high costs of raw materials. Sun Chemical
anticipates that the raw material prices will remain at their current
high levels. However, we are certainly aware of the high degree of
volatility in the global economy. Therefore, we will continue to monitor the key raw material indexes and focus our manufacturing team
on process and raw material productivity. In addition, we continue
to see increases in regulatory compliance costs.
One way pigments makers can stand apart from the
pack, is by offering consistent, reliable products and services.
Customers today have a great choice of pigment suppliers but
have learned in the last few years that there is a wide gap between the reliability of these suppliers, said Lavieri. There is
a greater recognition that an unreliable pigment supplier is a
poor business partner and this is driving a shake out of weaker
companies who in the past have had patent protected monopolies. Today, buyers are more savvy and make decisions based on
the entire value proposition including price, reliability and long
term sustainability. Lansco Colors has a strong value proposition and is thriving in these new market dynamics.
Traditionally the classical pigment market has been highly
competitive, said Wu. This trend continues. However, we are
now seeing intense competition in many of the specialty, higher

performance pigments. Prices have already been driven down

on all pigments, which may lead to some increase in prices as
any increase in cost will need to be passed through. However,
we fear short-term intense competition will further reduce margins. Trust Chem is putting more emphasis in 2013 to optimize
the production process, lower production cost and improve the
product design to help reduce cost. Trust Chem has had some
success here in 2012 and is looking at more breakthroughs leading to reduced cost on selected pigments in 2013.

New Developments
Sun Chemical Performance Pigments has invested and will
continue to invest heavily on high performance and special
effect pigments. An investment in high performance pigments can yield more in return for our customers than standard pigments, said Yazdani. High performance pigments
make products that are more appealing to consumers, help
businesses become more competitive, grow sales and improve margins. The high performance and special effect pigments market is important for Sun Chemical Performance
Pigments and thats why we recently acquired Benda-Lutz.
The acquisition of Benda-Lutz allows Sun Chemical to expand its product portfolio in metallic effects to our core
coatings markets and increase our global footprint in pigments and effects.

these pigments is that they not only show
extremely high tint strength but they exhibit a high level of chromaticity as well. The
current focus of Heubachs R&D department is to now ensure the availability of
these brilliant pigments on large scale. This
unique class of P.Br. 24 pigments is commonly used in plastics applications.

CHINACOAT 2012
Enjoys Huge Growth in
Attendees, Exhibitors

Dave Savastano, Contributing Editor

he Chinese paint, coatings and ink markets continue

to enjoy strong growth, and global suppliers are working hard to reach this ever-expanding market. It comes
as no surprise that CHINACOAT (The China International
Exhibition for Coatings, Printing Inks and Adhesives) 2012,
which was held in Guangzhou, China from November 28-30,
once again had huge increases in attendance and exhibitors.
Organized
by Hong Kongbased
Sinostar
International Ltd.,
CHINACOAThas
continuously
expanded since it was
formed in 1996.
On even years,
CHINACOAT
is
held in Guangzhou;
in odd years, the
show meets in Shanghai. The show is one of the largest global coatings shows, and Raymond Ho, director of Sinostar International
Ltd., said that CHINACOAT2012 far exceeded expectations.
After three busy days, CHINACOAT 2012 was concluded with excellent results despite the financial crisis in
Europe and global economic slowdown, Ho said. This
outcome exceeded my expectation. Not only the exhibitors
but also the trade visitors experienced a truly super show
with good visitor traffic, fantastic technology innovations,
and interesting delivery for current market trends and future opportunities.
Ho reported that 25,601 visitors attended this years
CHINACOAT. By contrast, the 2010 Guangzhou show was
attended by 20,367 visitors, which means that CHINACOAT
2012s attendance grew 25.7%.
The number of exhibitors also showed dramatic growth.
In 2010, 869 exhibitors displayed their capabilities at
CHINACOAT. In 2102, 1,032 exhibitors were on hand at

CHINACOAT2012, an increase of 18.8%; Ho added that

this years show had the highest international participation.
The show also got great support from VIP and delegates
from local and international trade associations, such as delegations from Vietnam, India, Korea, etc.,Mr. Ho added.
The rapid expansion of Chinas coatings industry has been
a major success story. Mr. Ho said that while the global economy has slowed
somewhat, China
and the AsiaPacific are still enjoying expansion.
Being
the
worlds
largest
coatings producer
and
consumer,
China will continue to be the focal
point of the global
coatings industry, Ho noted. Although the growth rate of
the country has been slowing down for the past two years, the
recent financial uncertainty in Europe only had a minor impact on the China coatings market. The highest international
participation of CHINACOAT 2012 has already verified that.
Some manufacturers even recorded a double-digit growth
in 2012, Ho added. Many of them were optimistic about the
market outlook, particularly Chinas. Some even expressed that
the global market has already hit its bottom. Regarding product
development, it will be emphasizing more on the diversity of
formulation and variety of function. Architectural (or decorative) and automotive coatings will keep dominating the coatings
market here in China.
Outside of the exhibition hall, CHINACOATalso featured
the successful 10th CHINACOAT Conference, which included
12 presentations on the theme of High Grade Coatings High
Solids High Build High Tech. Ho said that the conference
was attended by nearly 100 delegates, who expanded their

understanding and discussed industry challenges. While the

majority of the audience came from mainland China (69%),
there were delegates from Australia, Belgium, Germany, Israel,
Japan, Malaysia, South Africa, Thailand, UK and the U.S.
Regarding the Conference, many attendees commented that
they benefited tremendously by acquiring helpful knowledge,
developing network of contacts and meeting with experts, Ho
added.

Feedback from Attendees and Exhibitors

Attendees and exhibitors alike said they felt that
CHINACOAT2012 once again offered visitors the ability to
see first-hand the opportunities that are available to the Chinese
paint, coatings and ink markets.
Ho reported that the feedback that Sinostar received showed
that attendees were largely satisfied with the opportunities they
found at CHINACOAT2012 to source new products and suppliers, network with peers and keep abreast of industry happenings.
According to the preliminary visitor findings which Sinostar
collected during the show:
95% said CHINACOAT 2012 was successfully organized.

91% agreed the quality and mix of exhibitors were good.

85% would recommend others to visit.
Many exhibitors said that CHINACOAT continued to
grow every year, Ho added. They were happy with both the
visitor flow and quality. Some of them were pleasantly surprised
to find the generated sales leads were even better than exhibiting
at the Shanghai show. They would keep choosing CHINACOAT
as one of their vital promotional campaigns and the stage to
launch new products.
Chuck Hoover Jr., president of Hoover Color, who attended the show, said that CHINACOATis always worthwhile
to see, and this years show appeared to draw more visitors
from the U.S.
CHINACOATdoes a great job attracting global attendees, and because it did not fall on the American holiday of
Thanksgiving, it seems to have enabled U.S. companies to more
fully participate this year, Hoover added.
Exhibitors said that CHINACOAT2012 delivered on the
promise of meeting with the industry leaders who are driving
the growing paint, coatings and ink markets.

FEATURE CHINACOAT 2012 Review

The quality of the contacts has been very good, said Joon
Choo, vice president of Shamrock Technologies. We met with
a lot of customers on specific technical issues and requirements
that they have for short- and medium-term projects.
As expected, CHINACOAT was a very busy event for us,
said Josh Preneta, global segment manager for coatings, Cabot
Corporation. The show was well attended by a wide range
of industry participants throughout Asia. We also observed a
strong contingent of visitors from Europe and the Americas.
Cabot launched two new products at the show, Emperor 1200
and 1600, and we received a high level of interest in both products. Overall, it was a very successful show for us. Our booth
was busy almost non-stop from opening to closing on all three
days. We had a number of important customer meetings during
the show. We also made a large number of new connections and
started new relationships at our booth.
In April 2012, KH Neochem changed its company name from
Kyowa Hakko Chemical. Izumi Yuasa, sales and marketing for

the Specialty Chemicals Division, Performance Materials at KH

Neochem Co., Ltd., said that CHINACOAT2012 was the ideal
place to showcase the companys new start.
CHINACOAT2012 met our expectations to have opportunities to see many of our important customers and to directly
introduce our products to many potential and promising customers in the industry, Yuasa said. Furthermore, we believe
that our new start under the new name became widely known
in this show.
Its always impressive to see the scale of this massive coatings show,Yuasa added. The exhibition hall was filled with a
large number of people from all over the world. The highlight
of the show, we think, is the continuous expectation and attention to China from the global market, even during the economic
slow-down this year.
Next years CHINACOAT2013 will be held Nov. 20-22,
2013 in Shanghai. For more information, check the web at

Evonik Celebrates 50 Years

of Producing Isophorone
Chemicals for Paint and
Coatings Market
Evonik recently celebrated 50 years of
making isophorone chemicals. The first
plant for isophorone production commenced operation at the Herne site of
Hibernia, as a predecessor company of
Evonik Industries in 1962.
Discovered as a byproduct of acetone
catalysis, isophorone, a solvent, evolved
to eventually become one of the companys core areas of competency. The
continual development of this product,
combined with the exploration and tapping of new technologies and markets,
enabled the company to build an extensive product portfolio for applications in
a whole variety of industries.CW

Evonik Releases Environmental Impact Study on Degaroute Reaction Resin

Tiny glass beads embedded in the road marking material reflect the light from headlights in dark or wet conditions. This is
why the markings are still so easy to see in the dark, the fog and
the rain. Thanks to their structure, the lines and surfaces are extremely durable as well.
Various systems can be used to apply these kinds of structured, three-dimensional markings to roads. One of these is
cold-plastic marking based on Degaroute reaction resin from
Evonik Industries. Degaroute has proven itself in this application
for more than 50 years, the quality of the product having long
produced impressive results. Lately, however, it is not just safety
but the environmental aspect that is playing a more important
role. Increasing traffic volumes call for more and more markingsbut not at the expense of the environment.
For this reason, Evonik compared its Degaroute-based road
markings with three other common road marking systems: hotspray plastic, solvent-based paint and water-based paint. The
specialty chemicals company studied all four systems as part of
a comprehensive life cycle assessment (LCA). An LCA is a systematic tool that analyzes the influence a product has on the
environment over its entire lifespan. It takes account of the entire
value-added chain, from the raw materials, through production
and application, to disposal or recycling.
In this case, Evonik studied a two-lane, one-kilometer section of roadway equipped with a middle stripe and two edge
stripes. The assessment period was ten yearsafter this time
roads normally have to be resurfaced. Depending on the tech-

nology used, the markings have to be renewed at different

times in this period.
According to the results of the LCA study, cold-spray plastic
with Degaroute is far superior to the other technologies. It obtained the best results, thanks to its longevity in particular. The
study showed that, more than anything, the service life of a marking is key to its environmental impact. And in this respect, the solvent- and water-based systems came off second-best. Over the
period of the study, the solvent-based paint had to be reapplied
ten times to obtain the marking, while Degaroute-based coldspray plastic had to be reapplied four times. Hot- spray plastic did
similarly well in terms of longevity, but it consumed more material.
This high durability is primarily a result of the glass beads
contained in the marking material. According to the LCA study,
durability is also the deciding factor for CO2 emissions and,
therefore, the global warming potential of the individual systems. Hot-spray plastic has a 50 percent higher warming potential than Degaroute-based cold-spray plastic with glass beads,
and paint systems are roughly 80 percent higher. In comparison,
the application step accounts for a small percentage of the
global warming potentialwith the exception of hot-spray plastic, which has to be applied in a melted state at high temperatures, and requires the use of gas burners.
The LCA study was conducted in accordance with ISO 14040
and critically reviewed by independent experts from industry,
science and research. In early 2012, the system was certified to
ISO 1404.

that it can be recycled and used in producing new product in their manufacturing process.
This particular process also required
that the Attritor operate at elevated temperatures. To accomplish this, Union
Process built a special abrasion-resistant
steel tank featuring external clamp-on
heating plates ASME-rated for 150 PSI at
400 F. The approximate working capacity of the S-400 is 300 gallons of slurry.

high-speed disperser quickly incorporates

powders, fibers, pellets and other solids
into a liquid batch while the planetary
blade continuously sweeps the vessel
walls and bottom. The stirrer also functions to help move viscous material toward the saw-tooth blade and ensure
uniform heat distribution. Because each
agitator is independently controlled, flow
patterns and shear rates can be fine-tuned
at any point during the mixing cycle.
Used in conjunction with a Ross
Discharge System, the PowerMix is capable of high-throughput production of
viscous dispersions up to 2 million centipoise. This turnkey solution is utilized
in a wide range of applications including
adhesives, sealants, molding and potting compounds, fiber-filled composites,
plastisols, elastomers, conductive inks,
specialty coatings, thermal greases, lubricants and ceramic dispersions.

Lubrizol Launches Turboset

2027 PUD to Enhance the
Performance of Wood
Coatings

The large tank of the S-400 accommodates 12,000 lbs. of through-hardened

carbon steel grinding media.

Ross Offers New Planetary

Disperser and Discharge
System Turnkey Package
Ross has introduced a new Planetary
Disperser and Discharge System Turnkey
Package designed for high-viscosity, multi-stage mixing requirements.
The Ross PowerMix (U.S. Patent No.
4,697,929) consists of a stirrer blade and
a saw-tooth disperser, both of which rotate on their respective axes at different
speeds while orbiting the mix vessel. The

The Lubrizol Corporation has introduced Turboset 2027, an NMP-free,

self-crosslinking polyurethane composite dispersion formulated to enhance the
performance of interior wood coatings
used on floors and furniture, as well as
select sealers, without requiring additional crosslinkers.
Turboset 2027 has been designed to
elevate wood coating performance in
the key areas of durability and wear resistance. While similar to its forerunner,
Turboset 2025, Turboset 2027 is distinguished by its unique NMP-, NEP- and
APEO-free chemistry making it an ideal
solution for coatings intended for the
global market and when health or environmental matters are considerations.
According to the company, Turboset 2027
is a high-solids polymer, 40% by weight,
and can be paired with a wide variety of
cosolvents for greater opportunities to

Turboset 2027 offers impressive performance qualities with exceptional durability and resistance to chemicals and
overall wear, according to the company.
Test results for black heel mark protection and hardness have also been on a
very high level. In addition, gloss retention was comparable to high-VOC dispersions containing NMP. Crosslinking
with a polyisocyanate, while not required, can be used to provide further
improvement of performance regarding
black heel mark, chemical and scratch resistance. The film cure speed of Turboset
2027 is also a significant benefit.

PPG Brings Innovations to the Classroom

As part of an ongoing community outreach program, PPG

Automotive Refinish business development manager Steve
Topczewski and elite painters Jeremy Seanor and Jason Lutton
recently went to Hudson Middle School, Hudson, Ohio and
spent the day providing eighth grade students with an insiders
look at automotive refinish color and technology.
PPGs experts brought in painted panels and shared the intricacies of paint application and its technological advancements with
five art-and-technology classes taught by Terry Stump. The classes
combine computer skills such as Adobe Photoshop, GarageBand
for iMovies, and Quicktime with the rigorous and creative demands of drawing and design, the science surrounding cars, racing
and fuel and the practical use of all these skills in a business setting.
Students listened and watched as Seanor, a pinstriper, and
Lutton, an applications expert, demonstrated a range of refinish possibilities. Using free-hand techniques, Seanor pinstriped
daggers, flames and various abstract designs. Lutton focused
on colors and effects including metallics and flakes. Seanor and
