Task 4: Mathematics Learning Segment Overview

Learning Segment Overview Directions: Briefly describe the instruction preceding the assessment by typing within the
brackets in each section of the chart below (no more than 2 single-spaced pages). Do not delete or alter the chart; both the
chart and your description are included in the total page count allowed. Refer to the evidence chart in the handbook to ensure
that this document complies with all format specifications. Pages exceeding the maximum will not be scored.

Central Focus:
[The central focus of this lesson is
to provide an in-depth
comprehension and application of
two-digit addition. Students will
focus on applying place value and
regrouping in order to build off
comprehension of single-digit
addition.]

Lesson 1

State-adopted Content Standards

(or Common Core State Standards, if applicable):
[MCC1.NBT.5 Given a two-digit number, mentally find 10
more or 10 less than the number, without having to count;
explain the reasoning used.
MCC1.NBT.4 Add within 100, including adding a two-digit
number and a one-digit number, and adding a two-digit
number and a multiple of 10, using concrete models or
drawings and strategies based on place value, properties
of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and
subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and
explain the reasoning used. Understand that in adding
two-digit numbers, one adds tens and tens, ones and
ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose a ten.
MCC1.NBT.2 Understand that the two digits of a two-digit
number represent amounts of tens and ones.]

Formative and
Summative
Assessments

[This lesson is an
introduction to twodigit addition. The
main objectives
involve applying
concepts of place
value. Students will
also apply how to
line up the tens and
ones place.]

[Students will be provided with

an example of a two-digit
addition problem. The students
will be provided with a model of
how to line up the place value
digits. Once they have seen
this model of how to solve the
problem, I will allow students to
come practice various
examples. When regrouping is
required to solve a problem, I
will have the students figure out
what they need to do next.
Once this has been covered,
students will be sent to reading
centers that are divided up by
student ability levels and what
they needed more assistance
on. This might be math facts or
more advanced addition
problems.]

[Students will be
assessed through work
that is completed for
math centers. This
assessment will be
graded based on their
completion and
accuracy.]

Task 4: Mathematics Learning Segment Overview

Lesson 2

[The learning object

for this lesson is to
build on
comprehension of 2digit addition. The
students will apply
what they have
learned from the
previous lesson to
learn how to add
using ten-base
blocks and
discovering how to
regroup.]

[Students will be provided with

two quick warm up problems to
review the previous days skills.
The students will be shown
how to solve these same
problems using number lines.
The students will be shown
how to circle the number they
land on with the number line.
The students will also be
presented with word problems
to practice using two-digit
addition. After practicing both
concepts, the students will use
math centers to build on these
skills they have developed over
the past several days.]

Lesson 3

objective for this
lesson is for students
to build on their
comprehension of
two-digit addition
and learn how to use
a number line to
solve these
problems. The
students will also
learn how to apply
these strategies
through solving word
problems.]

[Students will be provided with

a quick warm-up problem to
review what they learned the
previous day. The students will
then be provided with ten-base
blocks to learn how to add and
regroup using these blocks.
After modeling one problem
and asking students to practice
several others, students will be
assigned to math centers.
These centers will continue to
build on skills that are required
for two-digit addition.]

[Students will be
assessed through
participation and math
centers. The students
will be tested based on
their completed work.
This testing is used
through the worksheets
about two-digit addition
while using ten-base
blocks that are
completed in their
centers. They will be
graded on
comprehension of the
content area.]
