SevenOakMiddleSchoolintheprocessofbecominganAVID,collegereadinessschool.
AVIDisourpathtoincreasethenumberofstudentswhoenrollandearnafouryeardegree.
AVIDisaschoolwidesystemtoencourageacollegegoingatmosphereandexpecthighlevels
ofacademicachievementfor
allstudents
.InanAVIDschool,allstudentsbecomecollegeready.
Tosupportthisendeavor,wesupportstudentsintheacademicmiddlethroughtheAVIDelective
course.Wetargethardworkingstudentswhohavethedesireanddeterminationtobesuccessful
incollege.Thesekidstendtohavethecapabilitiestobesuccessful,capableofcompleting
rigorouscurriculum,buttypicallyfallshortoftheirpotential.Whenselectingthesestudentswe
trytolookforstudentswhomeetoneofthefollowingcriteria:firstinfamilytoattendcollege,
lowincome,orminorityfamily.Weplacethesestudentsinrigorouscoursestoplacethemon
theircollegetrack:accelerateratherthanremediate.LastyearourAVIDelectiveof30wasnot
asequitableaswewouldofliked,manyofthemcamefromfamilieswithcollegebackground,or
financialstability.Thisyearbeingour2ndyearinAVIDwearelookingtoimprovetheequityof
ourelectiveclassesandrecruitstudentsinthemiddle.

Oursiteteamrepresentsamemberfromeverygradelevelandeverysubjectarea.Asa
collectivegroupweknoweachandeverystudent.Furthermore,asasiteteamwefeelthatthe
datasupportsourstudentrecruitmentplanandprocessforimplementationprovidedevidence
thatracialidentityisequitableintheAVIDelective.AsweaddednewstudentstoAVIDwe
continuallyrefiningasnecessarytocontinuethisselectionprocesstoensureequityoftheraces.
Additionally,ourdataonstudentswhoareonthenationalschoollunchprogramcontinuesto
showsequity.However,wearenotcontentwithgenderequity.Thedatashowsahigher
percentageoffemalesinAVIDthanmales,yetourschoolpopulationhasahigherpercentageof
boys.Wedidaddmoremalesthanfemalesinourrecruitment,butwestillneedtobemindfulfor
nextyearsrecruits.

ReflectiononProcessandBrainstorm/PreliminaryActionPlanforplanningour2015/2016
schoolyearrecruitmentprocess:

WehaveatwoSolidequitableAVIDelectivesthisyear,one7thandone8th.100%of
ourstudentsmeetthelocallydefinedselectioncriteria,includingnationallydefinedselection
criteria,classifyingthemasstudentsinthemiddle.Whichisillustratedintheattacheddata.
Thisisalargeimprovementoverlastyear.

Wearenowintheprocessofgatherdataonstudentsfornextyearsrecruits.Wehavea
listof151candidates,somehavealreadytunedinapplicationfornextyear.Iwillcreatean
invitationtoanAVIDinformationalsessiontobeheldinthegymonApril10,2015.Wewillbe
growingourprogrammyopeningnewsessionsnextyear,wewillmovefromtwotoatleast
threeclasses.Weanalyzestudentdata,andinterviewthestudentstomakethosedecisionsforthe
masterschedulemeetingApril24th,2015.

Wewillcontinuetoreviewandrefineourselectionprocesslookingforgrowthoftheprogram
whilemaintainingequity.
AdditionalEquitybuildingStaffDevelopmentonCornellFocusedNotes
ToensureequitablepracticesIleadaquarterlystaffdevelopmentforallteachersonthe
useoffocusednotetakingforallstudents.

ProfessionalDevelopmentintheareaoftheCORNELLWAY,focusednotetakingsystemwas
astrongfocusformethisyear.IbegantheyearinSeptemberwithabriefdirectoverviewof
whatAVIDisandhowweuseorganizationtopromotecollegeandcareerreadinessatSeven
Oak.Ifollowedupwithaprofessionaldevelopmentafternoonwiththerationalebehindwhy
theCORNELLWAYworksandthestepstoCORNELLWAY.

AttheveryendofOctoberIjoinedforceswiththehighschoolAVIDcoordinatorandwelead
adistrictwidesecondaryprofessionaldevelopmentontheCornellWayPDinHSauditorium
forallsecondaryteachers.Tomlin,HSAVIDcoordinatorandImetforhoursandcreateda
followupPDontheCornellWaybasedonwhatourstaffsneeded.Wefocusedonsteps6
through9,questionstotheleftandreviewingandrevisingwithapeer.WeshowedtheTED
video,"ThePowerofbeliefmindsetandsuccess,"forteachertotakenoteson.Afterthe
notetakinghadfinishedtheyturnedandtalkedaboutthevideo.Thenwehadthemupoutof
theirseatsdoingafishbowlwalkaroundtotheJourneysong,Dontstopbelieving.They
wereexchangingideasfromthevideo,andgettingthenameofthepersontheyreceivedthe
ideafrom.Whentheyreturnedtotheirseatsattheendofthesong,wecalledforashareout
fromastaffmember,andwhotheyreceivedtheinformationfrom.Whichproceededinpop
cornofstaff.Feedbackwasgood,staffenjoyedthedoingpartoftheactivities.

InFebruary,Ifollowedupwithathirdsessiononthefocusednotetakingsystem.Thissession
byfarwasthebest,thestaffhadsolidfoundationinnotedtakingandthetopicwasrelevant
andengaging.Ileadthemiddleschoolstaffthroughall10stepsoftheCORNELLWAY
focusingonanarticletitled,"HowPovertyAffectsClassroomEngagement"byEricJensen.
Feedbackwasverypositiveandsupportive.

Whilepromotingsuccessforeverychildthroughstaffprofessionalgrowthintheareaof
focusednotesIlearnedagreatdeal.Inthebeginningoftheyear,attheintroductionof
somethingnew,therewasapprehension,anddiscomfort.Inreintroducingfocusednotetaking
midyear,itseemedtobeasmootherpresentation.However,bythe3rdvisitonfocusnote
takingitwasasuccess.Ifelttheculturewaspositiveandaccepting.Ittakestimeandpatience
tomakesystematicchanges.IntheSpringwhenIcollectedWICORdataonthestrategies
beingusedintheclassrooms,wehad100%ofthestaffreportingthattheyusedCORNELL
notesintheirclassrooms.
