Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection
NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 1. PROMOTING CHILD DEVELOPMENT AND LEARNING
Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs are grounded in a child development
knowledge base. They use their understanding of young childrens characteristics and needs, of
multiple interacting influences on childrens development, and create environments that are
healthy, respectful, supportive, and challenging for each child. (NAEYC, 2010)

Brief Description of Evidence:

In the spring of 2010, I took ECED 103, Early Childhood Curriculum and completed
Schirrmachers Stages of Art Development binder. I collected a piece of artwork from each stage.
I went to a daycare and had children in each stage draw me a picture. I collected around 3-4
pictures for each stage, from different children. I organized my binder in order of the stages. In
my binder, I broke down each stage with a description and examples of artwork from children.

Analysis of What I Learned:

Through completion of this artifact, I learned how to determine a childs needs based on his/her
artwork. I can tell if a child is behind on his/her gross motor skills, for example, by the way he/she
draws and colors. I will also be able to determine if a child is behind cognitively. If a child is 4, but
still making scribbles instead of stick figures, I will be able to determine that the child is behind in
typical development. By doing this artifact, I am able to understand young childrens needs,
childrens characteristics, and the multiple interacting influences on children. From this artifact, I
know that a child in stage 1 lacks skill and coordination. Through doing this artifact, I also know
that a child in stage 2 needs materials to manipulate, problems to solve, and they continue to
develop gross and fine motor skills. Children in stage 3 are using what they already know to build
knowledge and they are also learning to manage their feelings in their role-playing activities.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:

The artifact demonstrates my competence of the NAEYC standard because I use my
understanding of young childrens needs to make sure that they are developing appropriately. I
will use the stages of art to help promote learning in all domains. I am also able to promote
development in my classroom, through what I learned in this artifact by using my knowledge of
the stages of development to determine where each child is in his/her typical development. This
artifact has provided me with basic knowledge of how children development, in many different
areas. This artifact also helped me determine how to make a safe, inviting, and challenging
environment for all children by using the stages of development to make sure each child is
challenged.
