Lesson Sketch 3 for EDT 313

Individual completing this lesson plan: Emily Knudson and Kaitlin Kownick
Lesson title: Who needs water?

Date that lesson was taught:

Standards in 2 Domains:
1. Domain- Cognitive Development and general knowledge
Sub-domain- Science
Topic-Inquiry
Science Inquiry and Application: Make careful observations.
2. DomainLanguageandLiteracyDevelopment
StrandListeningandSpeaking

Instructional objectives: list 2observable/measurable objectives for this lesson. Use precise language w/ action verbs.
The student will be able to:
1. Verbally predict what will happen to each plant as they continue to get watered and begin to grow
while communicating with their peers about their ideas, observations, and past experiences
that will influence their predictions.
2. The students will be able to verbally compare the different amounts of water that will be given to
the plants and make an observation of what plant will grow the tallest during the one week
they will be watering those plants.
Experiences: Describe authentic (real life, hands-on not representational) materials and enticing/ creative experiences in
which children are actively engaged. Safety should be addressed if warranted.

1. Have 2-3 children come to a table for the small group activity
2. To get their memories remembering about water and who needs water, the teachers will show the
water video again.
3. The students will verbally recap who and what needs water to survive to the teacher.
4. Teachers will then show the 3 plants that we brought in for them to water everyday.
5. All three plants will be fully grown and will be the same plant and the same size.
6. To connect what they discussed about the video and the plants, they will be asked if these plants
need water everyday to survive? They will then be asked what will happen to the plants if they are
watered everyday? They will also then ask what might happen to the plants if they are given no
water? This will be recorded.
7. One of the daily jobs is already to water the plants, so we will explain to them that these are three
more plants that will need to be watered daily.
8. To start the experiment, the teachers will explain that plant 1 is going to get 2 drops of water, plant
2 will get cup of water, and plant 3 will get 1 cup of water.
9. The children will be asked what they think is going to happen to the plants and we will record this
on a chart to have them work on their predictions. They will ask the children which plant they think
is going to be the biggest and record that into a graph.
10. Everyday they will water each plant with the designated amount of water they are supposed to be
given.
11. After 1 week, the students will observe how the plant has grown and will be asked what they think
happened to each plant.

12. To work on comparing and contrasting, the children will be asked which plant they think is doing
the best and which one looks like it does not have enough water.
13. The childrens thoughts will be recorded on the outcome of the plants on the chart where we will
see who was correct in estimating which plant was going to grow the biggest.
Evidence of student learning:
1. Record the childrens predictions and observations of the outcome of the plants on the chart.
2. Make a graph of the childrens predictions of which plant will grow to be the biggest.
Reflection:
The third lesson went really well. The children did a great job at coming to work in the hallway with
Kaitlin and I. They are becoming a lot more comfortable working in small groups with us. We typically
took out two students into the hallway at a time to work with us. We started with the water video again
which most of the children liked because it was something familiar to them. When we asked the children as
a re-cap from last week who needs water?, they all came up with some very good answers. The children
seemed very excited about the plants that we brought in and were eager to find out what we were going to
be doing with them. We started by asking the children what they think would happen to the plants/flowers
if we gave them water everyday. All of the children gave an answer, and most of the answers were correct
in that they thought they would get bigger. We then asked the children what they thought might happen if
you did not give water to the plants/flowers and all of the children also participated and answered that
question too. We recorded who said what on a chart that is attached below. These answers were a little bit
more diverse but most of them were still on the right track. When we showed the children the three plants
we also had three cups with the different amounts of water each plant was going to get everyday. We
explained to the children that plant number 1 will get the smallest amount of water and plant number 3 will
get the largest amount of water. We asked the children, which plant they thought was going to grow the
biggest? and all of them choose a plant and explained why. We created a graph (below) to show how many
children choose each plant. Plant number three was the winner and most of them said they chose number
three because it was going to be given the most water so they thought it was going to be the biggest.
Overall, this lesson went very well and we think that the children really understood what we were trying to
teach them. We cannot wait to see what the three plants look like next week!
