Tsin Yen, Koh. "Human Trafficking Debate." Salem Press Encyclopedia (2015): Research
Starters. Web. 18 Feb. 2015.
Tsin Kohs article discusses the history of human trafficking. He makes it a point to add
that not only is sex exploited through trafficking, but also, labor, children adoption, and organ
trade. Through Kohs article, it is revealed that researchers believe sex trafficking began as early
as the sixteenth century. The women and children forced into this modern day slavery are
tricked and forced into prostitution. Sex trafficking is by nature hidden, its boundaries are not
clear, and the victims are not easily identified. Most of the victims are taken from other countries
and cannot speak English fluently, therefore the men are taking advantage of them. In effort to
prevent trafficking, national governments and international organizations created The Trafficking
Protocol. This protocol would punish trafficking in persons and protect the victims. The United
States enacted The Trafficking Victim Protection Act, making it a federal offense, as well as
requiring an annual report of other countries that are combatting trafficking. They found traces of
sex trafficking in every country where the United States was the main hub. According to Kohs

article, it is estimated Women and girls make up fifty five percent of the victims. Tsin Kohs
article helps support my position that sex trafficking is a dangerous business and that people are
unaware that such a thing is happening.

Vejar, Cynthia. "Human Trafficking." Research Starters Sociology (Online Edition) (2009):
Research Starters. Web. 18 Feb. 2015.
In Cynthia Vejars article, she introduces a victim of human trafficking, Lucy Magambi.
Lucy was a Kenyan citixen who responded to an add put out ny an American business-man. The
responded to it because of the amount of income it would reward her with. This turned out to be
a scam for Lucy, and she was sexually exploited, overworked, and abused. Human trafficking
predators, of affluent nations, target females from financially unstable countries and young girls
who are looking for a hero in their life. These men come along and use them, without their
knowing, and force them into the horrific scenes of what is now known as modern day slavery.
The aggressor (Pimps) threaten the victims families if the girls were to try to contact authorities.
According to the United Nations, over one million fall victim to human trafficking annually. A
majority of these women come from South Africa. Cynthia takes the feminist perspective on the
sex industry. Radical feminist admonish it all together. They deem it abusive and immoral.
Liberal feminist feel women should have complete control of their sexual behaviors. Little do
they know the women are not doing these things for their pleasure, but they are being forced into
the industry. For women looking for a way out, the United States congress grants a T visa
which allows immigration immunity to trafficked victims. Hollywood has taken a stand against
trafficking of humans by offering assistance toward educating the public of the horrors of human
trafficking. The worst part of the manipulative contexts these young girls are operating under is

their superficial appearance that they are satisfied so no one knows they are in fear and
miserable. Vejars article helps support that no one knows what is happening to women and
children because the crime is incredibly hidden from the world.

Clark, Liat. Google Launches Global Human Trafficking Helpline and Data Network (Wired
UK)." Wired UK. N.p., n.d. Web. 18 Feb. 2015.
In Clarks article, he writes about the initiative google has taken to help human trafficking
victims. Google announced the launch of the Human Trafficking Hotline Network at and event
held by Google Ideas in Washington. Over eleven million dollars contributed to the cause in
2011. Google partnered with Polaris Project, Liberty Asia, as well as La Strada International, in
efforts to create this hotline. There is untapped data that google is trying to get a hold of to stop
human trafficking globally. People in the US have access to hotlines more easily, but those in
foreign countries are lost. Human trafficking enslaves over twenty-one million people, fortythree percent of those are being sex trafficking. Google wants to bring together efforts and get
victims to reach out to these hotlines even though they are ashamed. With proper controls, this
initiative could help shine a light on the global industry that is priced to equal that of the UK
fashion industry. This article will help me to show resources are out there so that people who are
aware of a victim, can reach out to them with this information, changing that victims life.
