Introduction
Make a green line. When we get to the gym
well run around the four times.
Last class we started using basketballs and
we used some bouncing skills. What kinds of
activities did we do?

Get gym keys.

Count down from ten and have all the students
come to the center.
What does 4-3-2-1 Freeze mean? (Remind
students of this and tell them that I will be
watching them extra close today.)

Body
Warmups:
Bounce ball with two hands:
- Students will stand in one spot with feet a
little bit apart. They need to bounce the ball
with both hands at waist level. Have them
count how many times they can bounce the
ball.
- Variations:
Bounce the ball at knee level
Bounce the ball at shoulder level
Bounce the ball from shoulder level to
knee level and back up again
Bounce the ball with one hand
Bounce and walk:
- Have students line up on the one end of the
gym on the blue line.
- The students will walk back and forth while
bouncing their ball using two hands.
- Variation:
Bounce and run
Observe students while they are bouncing the ball
at different levels. Can they keep good control of
the ball while they are bouncing it very low? Or
higher?
Diff: Students can bounce the ball at different
levels using both hands at first so that they can
have maximum control of the ball. Once they
show that they can control the ball quite well
using both hands I can challenge them by having
them bounce using one hand only. Also students
will all start by walking across the gym while
bouncing the ball but then they can start to run if
they need a challenge.
4-3-2-1 Freeze!
Have students line up on the blue line and take
four steps back.
- Students will hold their ball with two hands
(using all fingers) at their stomach. Their
elbows will be bent a little and the one foot
will be standing forward just a little to give
them extra support. Then they will use their
fingers to push the ball away.
- Students will throw the ball at the wall let it
bounce one and catch it.
- Variations:
Take a step back and let the ball

bounce twice before you catch it.

Make ten perfect throws and catches.
Bounce on floor first.
Observe how students are bouncing the ball. See
whether or not they are bouncing the ball away
from their stomach. See if students can keep good
control of the ball while bouncing it against the
wall.
Diff: Students will see and hear the instructions to
the various activities which will allow them to be
able to follow them better. Students will be able to
be challenge by taking a step back and still
catching the ball after a certain amount of
bounces.
Partner Bounce/Toss:
- Demonstrate this activity first.
- Demonstrate tossing:
Should I throw it like this? (One hand
power-throw? OR Over the head with
two hands? Underhand with two
hands?)
No I dont want to see you throwing it
like this.
- Make pairs of students. Have one group
member of each pair stand on the blue line
along the gym while the other partner
stands across from them.
- The partner standing against the wall will
toss the ball to their partner (using two
hands) and the student standing towards
the middle of the gym will bounce the ball
back using two hands.
- *Remember both students always need to
keep their eyes on the ball. You need to be
ready when it comes to you.
- And go!
- Switch Roles: Have the students switch
roles. Now the students standing along the
side of the gym will bounce the ball using
two hands and the other students will throw
the ball back.
- Remember to throw it with control! We
dont want to hurt anyone.
- I can see that you can control the ball if you
dont have to run across the gym after it.
Observe how well students work together and see
whether they can follow instructions. Observe how
well students can toss, bounce and catch the ball.

Lesson
What went well?
What changes
would you make in
your planning?
What have you
learned to improve
upon future
instruction?

Can they control the ball by tossing it so that their

partner can catch it? Do they throw the ball
safely?
Diff: Students may take a step back to make it a
bit more difficult.
Cleanup basketballs.
Ask:
- What did you like to do today? Was there
anything that was a little bit hard to do?
- Where do you throw your ball from? Over
your head?
Closure

Time

By asking questions at the end of the lesson.

Ask students what they liked and what they found
hard to do.
Give students positive feedback while they are
trying out the various activities. Correct students
where necessary. Encourage students to
challenge themselves. If theyve done ten perfect
throws have them go for twenty or take a step
back and try it again.
Line up at the door and quietly walk to your
lockers and get ready for recess.
Reflections
This lesson went great! I reinforced what it meant when I
said 4-3-2-1 FREEZE and this really seemed to help. A few
students still received a warning and a few were put to the
side. I need to realize that Im not hurting them by doing
this. The students know they received a warning and they
can hear me counting down so they should be ready to
freeze and pay attention by the time I say the word I will
definitely review this rule again!
I saw lots of great bouncing skills in the class! The activity
where students had to bounce the ball against the wall was
cut short as students were hitting the furnace (along the
edge of the gym) making them lose control of the ball. This
activity wasnt as effective as it could have been!
At the end there wasnt enough time for the partner toss so
I had students pass the ball between their own hands
(bouncing in between) from the one hand to the other hand.
I had students see how long they could do this. They kept
track by singing the ABCs to themselves. I had students
running up to me and saying: I got to the letter ___ They
were quite excited that they could keep control of the ball
for that long. Some even made it to the letter Z!
During one of my first classes I remember that one of the

girls was bouncing a basketball with her hands hidden in

her sleeves. I didnt really think much of it but later I
realized that I should have said something about this
because thats not the correct way to bounce a basketball.
In todays class one of the students was bouncing the
basketball with his fist and was constantly running after the
ball so I corrected him and showed him why it didnt work
for him. Sometimes these seem like little things but they
arent actually. Its a difference of being able to play
basketball and not being able to play! ;)
Goals for next class:
- CONSTANTLY look around the class. One of the boys
was switching his basketball every 3 minutes. I caught
him eventually and talked to him about it. I asked him
to show me that he could control the basketball while
bouncing it at different heights and from the one hand
to the other. He was actually quite good at it!
