Type of Culture Competence: Emotional Competence and Behavioral Competence


Grade: 4th Graders
Topic: Days and Dates (---Festival)
Learning Cultural Objective:
Students will be able to interest in and respect different tradition by learning
American festivals and Chinese festivals.
Students will be able to interpret the different traditions between Chinese Spring
Festival and Christmas in English and comply with the traditions.
Online Tool: Padlet and Animoto
Activity: Group work & Brainstorm; Presentation
Steps:
1. Review
Greet students. Ask How are you? and What day is it today? Use the flashcards to
review the words about week such as Monday, Tuesday and ordinal numerals such
as first, second. The teacher shows these cards quickly, the students say the words
as soon as possible. Then, the teacher asks students some questions. For example,
what do you do on Monday/ Tuesday? The teacher tells the students today they are
going to learn months and festivals.
2. Teacher Input--- vocabulary about months
The teacher uses power point to show the words about months. The students repeat
the words after the teacher. The teacher asks some students to read these words
independently. The students read the words together. Then the teacher shows other
pictures about some festivals and has students tell what the date is. For example, New
Years Day, Tree Planting Day, Fools Day, Labor Day, Childrens Day, Teachers Day,

National Day, Halloween, Christmas Day. Then the teacher asks the students try to
write down these dates on the worksheet.

3. Guided Practice
The teacher tells the students Spring Festival is one of the most important festival in
China while Christmas is one of the most important holiday in the U.S.. The date of
Spring Festival depends on the lunar calendar, usually in January or February.
Christmas Day is on December 25th.
The students are divided into 4 groups. Two of groups brainstorm about the custom
and activities on Spring Festival. The other two groups discuss the custom and
activities on Christmas Day. They write their information on Padlet. The teacher
walks around and helps students solve their problems such as the words that they
dont express. At last, the teacher has the students look at Padlet and share their ideas
with other groups. The teacher tells students the origin of Christmas.

4. Independent Practice
Activity A: Presentation
Each group will search some information using computer and make a video using
Animoto so that they can do their group presentation about the traditons of Spring
Festival or Christmas Day.
Activity B: Making Poster
The teacher plays a video about Christmas and help students understand the origin
and custom. And the students have known the custom of Spring Festival and
Christmas. Then each group makes a poster to introduce the traditions about Spring
Festival and Christmas.
5. Summarize:
The teacher has students summarize the custom and activities about two festivals on
the white board and talk about what they should do in different countries in order to
comply with the tradition.
6. Closure
Ask some question and have students review what they have learnt today. For
example, what do people do on Christmas Day? What do people on Spring Festival?
Remind students of homework and dismiss the class.
