entrepreneurship.
However,hetakesamorehandsonapproachwithhisstudentsandhasthemparticipateinthesemiannualeventthey
callMarketDay.
Guyhastaughteconomicsformorethan10years.HedevelopedMarketDayforseniorswhohehopeswilllearnhowto
valuemoneyandbeontheirwaytostartingtheirownbusiness.
SeniorsintheeconomicsclassesarerequiredtocreateandsellproductsonMarketDaytothestudentbody.
MarketDayisbasicallyanentrepreneurshipprogramtoteachthestudentshowtostartabusiness,runabusinessand
keepit.ItwaspresentedtotheschoolandwasanideathatcamefromtheNationalCouncilofEconomics,saidGuy.
Thestudentssplitupintogroupsandworkwitheachotherthroughoutthesemestertocreatebusinessplans,market
researchandadvertisements.
Theassignmentwasgiventothestudentsatthebeginningofthesemester.Theproductsthegroupschoosehavetobe
approvedbyapanelofdifferentfacultymembers.
Inordertofindoutwhatproductsinterestthestudentbody,thegroupshandoutsurveystomorethan100studentsand
facultymembersaskingvariousquestions.
ShannonPaloma,aneconomicsteacheratArcadiaHighSchool,said,Itempowersstudentsintheeconomy.Alotof
themdontthinktheyarecapableotherthanwhattheyarespecificallytrainedtodo,butitshowsstudentsthatthereare
otherwaysofgettingbyandmakingmoneyiftheyputeffortintoit.
CheyenneMenesesisapartofagrouptryingtosellairfresheners.
Theyarereallycute.Wehadasurveyandweheardthatalotofpeopleweresellingtshirts,sowewantedsomething
different,shesaid.Weheardaboutinthepastairfreshenersdoingwell,andonlyoneothergrouphaseverdonethem.
Weknewpeoplewouldbuythem.
ThegroupiscalledRefreshYourself.Theyhadacompanymaketheairfreshenersandincorporatetheirdesign.
Thisisareallygoodopportunity.Youcantakethemoneyandkeepsellingthethingsandputyourselfthroughcollege
orbuythingsyouneed,saidMeneses.Youjusthavetoputyourselfintheirshoesandaskwhattheywouldwantand
howitsunique.
SydneyZmichandhergroupedchangedtheiroriginalproductbecausetheythoughtthenewonewouldappealtomore
people.

Itsauniqueopportunitytocreateyourproductandsellandmakeanactualprofitforyourowncompany.Itslikewe
areinvestinginourownproducts,shesaid.Itsreallycompetitive,becausehighschoolstudentsdonthavehundreds
ofdollarstospend,sotheyreallythinkaboutwhattheywanttobuy.
Eachpersoninthegroupisonlyallowedtospendupto$100.Anyprofitmadewillbedistributedevenlythroughoutthe
group.Thestudentscanchoosetospendmoneyontheirproductmanufacturingoradvertisements.

Wecameupwithitbecausesurveyedpeoplewhowouldwearhats,andiftheywerepatrioticandpeoplesaidthey
wouldwearahatthatresemblesAmericasinceitistheircountry,saidVaught.Wewentoffwhattheywanted.
