Theme: People, Places and Environment - Come Join the
expedition
Grade level: 2
Group Members: Elizabeth Santos, Brittany Sauls, Kayla Martinelli, Courtney Kelley
Pre-Post assessment ideas: Using socrative we will create a multiple choice and short answer test
that asks what certain vocabulary words
Outline below, what will take place on each day and who is responsible for the lesson plan!
Day 1:
NGSSS-SS.2..1.2: Using maps and globes, locate students hometown, Florida, and North
America, and locate the state capital and national capitol.
The teacher will welcome class dressed as a tacky tourists and ask the students to tell a few
things about what Florida has to offer. Basically selling the teacher on Florida. We will bring in
a globe (this will be used as a talking tool) and introduce students to its purpose and where they
live on the globe and the map. Introduce accordion (will be constructed by teacher). Students
will pass the globe around and talk about their neighborhood and the teacher will introduce some
key terms (such as compass, key) will be used the following day.

Day 2:
The teacher will introduce the Map Keys (Rookie Read-About Geography) by Rebecca Olien to
provide scaffolding for the students to use legends in a map. Then we will bring out the map and
globe again to discuss what we learned the previous day.
They will draw a map on the accordion of their streets. This will introduce the legends of a map
and why they are needed. Key Vocabulary will be introduced and written in a vocabulary journal
(student personal dictionary). The teacher will tell the class to bring in magazine that are related
to their city. I will provide supplies, if students do not have access to these resources.

Day 3: Students will bring out the accordion and the teacher will ask them what landmarks are in
Orlando. The teacher will bring in Orlando magazines, brochures, etc. The students will cut
out one or two things that remind them of their city and put them in their accordion.

Day 4:
1. LAFS.2.RI.4.10- By the end of year, read and comprehend informational texts, including
history/social studies, science, and technical texts, in the grades 23 text complexity band
proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range.
2. LAFS.2.RI.3.9 Compare and contrast the most important points presented by two texts on the
same topic.
3. SS.2.A.1.2 Utilize the media center, technology, or other informational sources to locate
information that provides answers to questions about a historical topic.

Teacher will read My Grandma Lives in Florida to the class as well as another book.. They
will follow along with the book on the Doc cam to read along with the teacher. Compare and
Contrast another state and Florida with hula-hoops venn diagram (teacher has slips already
prepared). Students have the choice to bring in an item for show-n-tell on Day 5.

Day 5: Teacher will begin by reviewing the information learned over the week before with the
formal post assessment. After assessment, students will be able to present their accordions and
explain their item that they chose to bring that represents something they learned throughout the
week.
