Lesson Title_____Science_______________________
When I arrived, Stephanie had already started her science lesson. Children were
predicting properties of liquids they would be observing today (corn syrup & shampoo)
based on prior knowledge. Ms. Bohn recorded their predictions on the white board.
They recorded their predictions in their individual journals by copying several of the
properties listed on the white board.
Materials for observations were prepared and placed on a table. For each assigned set of
partners, one child picked up a tray and the second picked up a piece of wax paper.
Planned materials distribution resulted in orderly preparation for students learning
activity.
3-2-1 countdown effectively prepared students to conclude each activity and prepare for
sharing or for the next set of directions. Ms. Bohn competently engaged students in
examining the properties of corn syrup and shampoo. Her questioning engaged students
in describing, explaining, and recording their observations.
She guided children to conduct a flow test to test their predictions. Her questions led
students to describe and compare. When SB noted that 2 groups were not following
directions, one child started crying. In a supportive way, Ms. Bohn assured her that her
mistake could be fixed.
She guided students to collect materials and clean up their work spaces helping them to
become responsible citizens in this first grade community.

JOURNAL/DIARY: Consistently reflective with a focus on professional improvement and enhancing learning
opportunities
TIME SHEETS:
ASSIGNMENTS: Stephanie is preparing her professional website for seminar instructor review.
LESSON PLANS: Very carefully planned! Evidence of thoughtful preparation! Plans for materials management
optimizes time for student engagement in meaningful learning and minimizes time for distribution and collection of
materials. Planned questioning focused on engaging children in using the scientific method to explore the properties
of liquids.
