Running Record
The purpose of completing running records with your students is to know exactly where
each student stands with their reading level. This will help the teacher select appropriate
objectives for their lessons so that every lesson is meaningful and productive. It will help the
teacher select books for her students and create an environment to challenge and satisfy students.
It will also help understand what further instruction the student needs in their future. The data
collected is from a student at Constable Elementary School. This student usually reads at a
moderate pace and is interested in books that relate to things he enjoys. This took place in the
back of the classroom while other students were completing silent reading work. The students in
this classroom are used to completing running records, so my student knew what to expect.
For this assessment, I used the first two pages from the book Today was a Terrible Day.
First I sat the student down and informed him about what he is about to read and how this isnt
graded and is only going to help me become a better teacher. I then told him that all he has to do
is read this aloud to me. I also had a copy of what he was reading so that I can use the coding
system to help with my findings. The coding system is used to calculate where the students
reading accuracy is. It is a system of different symbols that allows the teacher to record whether
the student made and error or not. My findings consisted of only two errors. These errors were
appeal for help. This student was having trouble with the two names in the passage; Tyler and
Ronald Morgan. I found this interesting because the rest of the passage he mainly did with some
self-correction and sounding out words slowly with no problem. Yet with the proper names he
was going to skip over them completely. When he was completed with the passage, I asked him
to tell me about what he just read and he was able to understand the passages meaning. He also

read through the passage quickly except for when he was sounding a word out or when he got to
the proper names. Over all this student did an efficient job reading this and I would use
something a little more challenging next time.
I would use these findings to inform instruction by looking at where the student struggled
and build from there. In this case, the student was having trouble with proper nouns. I then will
create a mini-lesson reviewing or teaching proper nouns so that it doesnt interrupt or distract the
students from comprehending the text. Also it is important to be able to read proper nouns
because it will help the student name who they are describing when talking or writing about the
text.

RUNNING RECORD LESSON PLAN: Proper Nouns
Rationale: Students will become more comfortable with proper nouns.
Standards:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.2.6
Acknowledge differences in the points of view of characters, including by speaking in a
different voice for each character when reading dialogue aloud.
http://www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy/RL/2/
Objective:
Students will:
1. Demonstrate the understanding of proper nouns by creating their own list of proper
nouns on a specific topic, by creating a poster board of proper nouns, and completing
their exit-slip.
Procedures:

Begin with asking the student what a proper noun is and write it on a board.
o What are proper nouns? Proper noun is the name of a particular person, place,
thing, or idea. A proper noun is always capitalized.
Example: Miss Webb, United States of America, West Virginia, Bobby, George
Washington, etc.
o Explain to the students why it is important to understand proper nouns so that they
know who is speaking and are able to use the names of the characters to help
describe the story they are reading.

Then ask the student to give examples of proper nouns on a specific topic.
o How many proper nouns can you think of on a specific topic?
1. Nouns: Famous People
2. States
3. Fast Food Restaurants
Now that the students are becoming more comfortable with proper nouns, have them do a
Word Search Activity, where they use magazines to cut and paste all the proper nouns
they find on their poster board. Also before student begin to work on their poster board,
hand out their exit-slip worksheet that needs to be collected before the time allowed is
finished.

Future Connections: Student will be able to read more fluently when the use of proper nouns is
involved. Also students will build off of this new skill.
