Intern Teacher's Descriptive Report:
During my PSIII internship | had the mest rewarding experience of my life. | felt very
welcomed by the staff and the students. | was given the opportunity to teach health,
literacy, physical education, grade 3 math (which included the grade threes of my class
and another) and social studies (which included my class and another 2/3 combination
class). Each of my classes consisted of about 20 students, and for all but math there
was an educational assistant in the class. Being in a combination class gave me a small
range in the age of my students. As well as having a range of ages, my students also
came in with a range of abilities; the reading levels ranged from kindergarten to grade
8. This created a challenge for me as a teacher, | had to ensure that all my students.
‘were able fo learn and understand the content and stay engaged at the same time. I
taught units on measurement, addition and subtraction, fractions, multiplication, people
and the environment, goods and services, basketball, gymnastics/fitness, dance and
the 7 Habits of Happy Kids. | have a CTS degree which | find useful for all of my
subjects. CTS is very cross circular, so my experience there helped me bring social into
my health unit, literacy into my physical education and math classes. | was not teaching
within my major but | didn’t want to become a teacher to only teach CTS classes, |
became a teacher to teach students.
During my time at Coalhurst Elementary | was able to help coach one of the mini
basketball teams. | have had the opportunity in past years to coach, but not while | was
Paget otsPS Firat por tor Kai Sin)
doing my practicum. | found this experience very rewarding because | was able to get to
know different students, in different grades. To me coaching is one of the perks of
being a teacher.
and another PS Ill student had the opportunity to collaboratively create a sign
language club and this was also very rewarding. It wasn't just the students leaming
something new but | was as well. We even integrated sign language into our classroom
«they knew how to ask to go to the bathroom politely and could understand my
response).
Anew experience forme this semester was working with a teacher who was new to the
profession. With only a year worth of experience under her belt the teacher and | were
be to collaborate and grow as new teachers together. It was nice ta talk to someone:
‘who was recently in the sub pool so | know what to expect when | graduate. It was also
easy fa comment on what we noticed in the classroom because there was no judgment
we both wanted to grow as much as we could.
Although my time being the student at the University of Lethbridge is coming to a close,
my profession as an educator is just beginning and | know there is still So much for me
to leam and grow from. | look forward to my career as a teacher.

Xaitlyn enjoyed a very successful practicum while at Coalhurst Elementary School
eaching in a Grade 2/3 split. There is little | can add to the comments of her teacher
