Common Core:
8.G.7. Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to determine unknown
side lengths in right triangles in real-world and mathematical
problems in two and three dimensions.
AQTS:
1/ Organize and present content so that it is meaningful and
engaging to all learners
Review: Pythagorean Theorem: 2 + 2 = 2
Draw common examples (3-4-5, 5-12-13, etc.)
Label sides: a, b, and c
Ask student to find example triangles around the
classroom.

One-on-one: Graphic organizer note/example sheet: Include

Pythagorean Theorem and one completed right triangle, one
triangle missing a side, and one blank triangle.
Discuss first example with student, and have student
redraw it on the board. Ask student to label sides (a, b,
and c) and explain/show why the triangle is Pythagorean.
Have student draw second triangle (missing a side)
Explain how to find missing length, and ask student to
complete problem on graphic organizer
Help student to find a triangle within the classroom,
measure it, and determine if its a Pythagorean triangle.
Guided practice: Give student a small white board. Have student
find missing side of 3-5 additional triangles, one at a time. Then
have student measure and cut out representations of the
triangles with appropriate side lengths.
Formative Assessment: Student will use Pythagorean Theorem
and note sheet to solve/find the missing length of five triangles.
Evaluation: Student was able to use the Pythagorean Theorem to
solve for the unknown length of a side of a right triangle 4/5
times.
