A large-scale study was completed on fourth graders in 33
countries to determine that classmates family factors are more
strongly related to reading achievement than classmates
characteristics. Factors such as socioeconomic status and
educational resources were analyzed. The researcher discusses
three contributions to student learning: Microsystems (family,
classroom), mesosystem (relationships between classmates
families), and macrosystem (economy, culture).
My school district qualifies for 100% free lunch, or a low SES
community.
To compare this studys findings with my participants reading

The author suggests reasons why SES students perform lower
academically and compares them to students with a higher
SES. The author uses Tienken (2013) analysis to compare US to
international scores. She reviews a study completed in 2013 by
Hagans and Good that used DIBELS data and intervention
groups to track reading ability for first graders in a school that
has 58% free/reduced lunch.

First graders were chosen to be participants in a study
comparing at-risk students in a tier 2 group to at-risk students
who received the regular classroom instruction. Tier 2
instruction was given by the speech-language pathologist and
special education teacher. The tier 2 group had higher mean
scores, but did not approach significant improvement
compared to the group that received the regular instruction
only.
Benefits of tier 2.
Use of DIBELS to determine students who need additional
reading support.
Speculate on my participants involvement in tier 2 and 3. Is
there significant improvement from second grade?
Improvements from beginning of third grade?
What if she only received regular instruction; would her scores
still improve?

Johnston addresses the understandable reasons for starting
RTI, such as over identification of special education students
and minorities. He writes about his concerns for RTIs
effectiveness and the importance of teacher expertise. He
breaks down the history of specific learning disorders (SLD),
the growing number of students identified, and the IQ
achievement discrepancy, as major factors associated with the
start of RTI.
