Anticipatory Set (Hook & Agenda):

2 min
If your pay for lunch with cash, how do you know if you should get
change back? How will you make sure you give the cashier the
right amount? What if you get the wrong amount of change back?
It is important for us to understand how to make change so we
know how to pay for things. It also helps us ensure we get the
right about of money back after we buy sometime.

Access/Review Prior Knowledge:

Two lower groups
Lets talk again about the value of different pieces of money.
*Ask students to raise their hand if they can name a coin and its
value*
Higher groups
Remind me about the 2 ways we discussed making change
(Counting on and computation/subtraction)

Teaching Process & Modeling (Content is presented, accessed, or built):

Use SmartBoard to present content to two lower groups.
1) Explain that one way to make change is by counting on.
2) Make sure to model a problem by counting on
3) Explain the other way to make change is by computation, or subtraction
4) Model solving a problem by using subtraction
5) Remind students that when solving word problems, they should always
identify important information.
Guided Practice & Checking for Understanding:
On SmartBoard, provide a practice problem for the students to solve on
whiteboards. Depending on their success, more instruction and guidance may be
needed. If not, students can continue to independent practice.
This serves as the review for the 2 higher groups that, based on the preassessment, already have an understanding of making change
Independent Practice:
For independent practice, students will play a board game. Depending on
group size, there should be 2-3 students per board game.
1) Each student should pick a game piece. They can roll dice to determine
who goes first (highest roll goes first)
2) The first player should draw a question card. They should solve the
problem on the card. If they get the answer correct, they can roll the dice
to see how many spaces they move. If they get the question incorrect,
they stay in the same spot.
3) Other players should follow the steps above. The students can check their
answers with the answer sheet. The goal of the game is to get to the end
of the game board first!

Primary use for

2 low groups;
review for other
groups

8-10
min
Make sure to
watch students
as they solve on
the white
boards. They
may need some
extra guidance.
5-10
min
There are two
sets of game
cards to
accommodate
the different
groups of
students.

NOTE: There are TWO different sets of game cards. There are sets with
easier questions that should be used for the lower leveled groups. The
other sets provide more challenging questions for the 2 higher level
groups.

Closure:
Raise your hand if you can tell me the two strategies we can use to make change.

Declarative Statement Summary:

Today we learned how to make change by counting on or using subtraction.
