THE LEARNING CONNECTION

Fall 2014

Ms. Wards Third Grade Class

When in Rome...
Greetings from Ms. Wards Class!
Your student will be exploring the exciting culture and history of ancient Rome! They will have
the opportunity to create art like the ancient Romans, engage in trading and business as the ancient Romans did, and learn how ancient Rome has impacted our world today. Join our class as
we travel back to ancient Rome and take advantage of the resources provided to further your
students learning at home!

Making Connections

the book list.

One of the exciting things about this unit is that it has wonderful connections to our
other areas of study. In science, we will explore the importance of soil and experiment
with growing plants in different types of soil. Do you have a garden or plants in your
home? Feel free to invite your student to work with you on caring for the plants. Ask them
what kind of care your plants may need to survive.
Students also have the opportunity to read fun books about ancient Rome! In our
classroom, we have a collection of books that relate to our study of ancient Rome. Our
reading unit will complement our study of Rome, as students will read fictional texts taking them back in time to ancient Rome! We have some of the books below in our classroom, but they must stay at school. However, scan the QR code to see some of the titles
on ancient Rome that are available at Massanutten Regional Library or other local libraries. Enjoy reading these books with your student!

Please save all of your plastic bottle caps, wash

them with soap and water, and send them with your
student to school. We will be creating a large mosaic
as a class, and we need as many bottle caps as
possible. Help us turn our knowledge of ancient
Rome into a masterpiece!

Please feel free to email me with any

questions or concerns. I would be
more than happy to exchange emails,
set up a phone conference, or find a
time to meet!
