BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:
PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:
Introduction: To begin the lesson I will say, Students lets count to ten! students count. That how we count
by ones today we are to count by tens. Who has heard me count to ten when time is almost up for an activity?
students respond. Who knows how to count by 10 all on their own? a few students volunteer. Counting by
tens are important. Can anyone tell me how many fingers we have on both of your hands? Children will
respond How many toes do we have on our feet? Children will respond Today class will be make groups of
ten like our fingers and toes.
Procedures: The introduction on how many fingers and toes do we have will take about 3 minutes.
Next we will go through slides six and seven group the apples and pencils. I will call students up to help
move the pictures to one side of the screen to make a definite division of each group. This group
participation will take about 10 minutes.
Then I will review grouping ten. Making sure the children remember to count each picture until they get
to ten. This will take about 5 minutes to address.

Next I will allow the three children to quickly grab 10 small items in the classroom to bring to the front
of the class to count out. This may take about 15 minutes to get correct.
Then I will show them the worksheet they are going to complete. I will complete an example of coloring
10 umbrellas in the first box. I will explain the directions are to color 10 objects in each set. The worksheet
will take about 15 minutes to complete.
The teacher will monitor the childrens progress by walking around the classroom to observe those who
are progressing well and helping those who may need a little more guidance.
(Demonstrating the directions in the first group of umbrellas is a way to show students who may have
different learning needs or come from a different background where English is not there native language.)
Closure: Students will be given a five minute announcement to finish up their worksheet, then a two
minute announcement that the lesson is coming to a close. I will say, Alright class time is up I am going
to count to 100 by 10s and everyone must hand me their papers, put utensils in the basket, in the middle
of the table and return to their assigned spots on the carpet.

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:
The goal of this lesson is the accuracy of being able to identify objects in groups of tens and counting the groups
of 10 up to 100. The children participated in large group activity of gathering classroom objects and counting out
loud to form groups of ten. The students then applied their knowledge to individual worksheets of grouping ten
objects. The assessment of the worksheet show evidence of the goals and learned objective in the lesson.

MODIFICATIONS:
The students who were assessed and did not master the objectives will receive assistant from teacher during group
time and during free time. Students who are ready to move on can become helpers in assisting a peer that is near
them and in need of a little help.
