GET ME OUT OF HERE!

By: Melissa Guarino
Big Idea: Across Cultures and throughout time humans create imaginary
spaces.
Intro to 2D Design Studio/ 9-12grades
4-5 sessions 80 minutes
OVERVIEW
Students will create a multi-media pencil drawing that incorporates a photographic
image obtained by using their smart phone or digital camera. The students will
create an imaginary environment that their photographic image will part of. The
photographic image will be of the student in an action pose that will correspond
with their conceptual drawing. The imaginary landscape may be representational
or abstract. The students will complete a questionnaire that will help them develop
their conceptual landscapes. The finished artwork will be on 11x14 paper using
pencils, and if they choose to add an accent of color, colored pencils.

LESSON RATIONALE
Students will develop drawing skill by rendering an imaginary landscape or space
using pencils of varying hardness. The students will develop their understanding of
how the hardness of a pencil affects the ability to represent the entire range of
value in their artwork. The students will exercise their capacity for creative thinking
by creating an original drawing inspired by their imagination rather than exercising
their observational drawing skills.

KEY CONCEPTS

Humans create imaginary worlds and spaces that depart from reality to convey
feelings, communicate ideas, illustrate the subconscious and to explore current
issues related to identity.
Artists invite viewers into their imaginary worlds by creating artworks, poetry, video,
music or a combination of mediums.
Artists convey personal aspects of their identity through their artworks.
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS
How can artists improve their skills?
How do artists use mixed media?
How does culture influence the artists content within their works?

OBJECTIVES, THE STUDENTS WILL

Knowledge:

Explore the use of technology as a medium for 2-D design by using their mobile
device camera or digital camera as a photographic tool and using photo editing
software or apps to create the photographic component of the artwork.
Illustrate an aspect of their identity by creating an imaginary space or landscape
that expresses a mood, feeling, activity or trait of the artist.
Skills:
Create a mixed media artwork by using photography, collage and accurately
illustrating an environment that relates to their pose using graphite pencil.
Demonstrate skills by practicing drawing skills by representing value and using
blending techniques with graphite pencils.
Dispositions:
Recognize that artists, writers, architects and interior designers create imaginary
spaces to create feelings, memories and experiences.
Reflect on the creative collage making process.
ASSESSMENT:
Pre Assessment:
Students will be assessed upon completion of their idea worksheet which will be
worth 10 points towards their final grade for the project.
Formative:
The students will be assessed upon the completion of their photography component
of the artwork. The student will show the teacher their printed image before being
able to progress to the drawing portion of the project. Also, the students will
create at least 2 thumbnail sketches of their concept. The assignments will be
recorded as part of their summative assessment.
Summative:
Students finished collage drawing will count as evidence of a completed work of art
and will be assessed by a rubric containing a rating system that evaluates the
quality of the photographic image, evidence that the image has been altered using
the smartphone photo editing software, or the app PicsArt, the originality of their
environment, how well the photographic image relates to the drawing, and the use
of value, shading, blending and illustration quality of the background. Students will
also be given a self-assessment grading sheet to reflect on their art making process.
