The capstone project completed went relatively to plan. The capstone involved creating
and using an online class type system to help keep students who miss a lot of class due to health
reasons stay up to date on their class work. The capstone also worked to help those students
study outside of school that needed to review the material. The process required the user and
creator to learn how to use the system. The system used was the Desire 2 Learn (D2L) system
that the school system is currently trying out. The capstone required constant updating and
grading to ensure that the students material was current and easy to understand. The
evaluations completed by the students showed a promising result. The students said that the
online system used helped them stay up to date. They also said that the system helped them
study after school hours. There have been follow ups including trying to get resources up on
D2L for all math courses offered at the school. The math department, as well as several others,
has requested that the school system keep its subscription to D2L so that all of the resources and
qualities that it offers can be utilized. A major barrier that had to be overcome was that one of
the students who required the service of this system did not have access to the internet or a
computer. A teacher had to go to the childs home with a computer and Wi-Fi access in order for
the child to stay up to date on their school work.
This capstone started with the coach participating in a coaching session to learn about the
learning management system D2L. The coach then put together a presentation for their fellow
geometry mathematics teachers to learn about D2L. The teachers then put together a presentation
to teach their students how to use D2L. After all participating parties had learned how to use the
D2L system, the coach built the first unit in the system to show what the others unit should look
like. The coach decided to begin with unit three to allow all participants to learn the system and

still have time to implement more units later in the year. All participants complete surveys in the
beginning, middle and end of the unit. This allowed the coach to see where improvements could
be made throughout the unit and the process of making information available through the D2L
system. After the unit was complete, the coach gave a presentation of the data and the D2L
system to all mathematics teachers.
The coach started in the tenth grade because they consistently have more students who
participate in the Hospital and Home Bound program. The goal was to start in the tenth grade
and slowly add more classes and unit to the material. The aspect of D2L that were used were the
quiz features, presentations features, class discussion, teacher email, module format, and check
lists. All geometry teachers sent home a letter to the parents of their children to tell them about
how the teachers would be using D2L. Any student who did not have access to internet was
allowed to use the computers during free time, study hall, before school, and after school.
All parties that participated on the unit loved the entire process. Approximately 50% of
all studies used the online system. 75% of those 50% of students experience a grade boost and a
higher level of understanding while using the D2L system. Of the 4 students that used the D2L
system for the purpose of the Hospital and Home Bound program, 3 of those students were able
to come back to class up to date on their work. These students loved the system even more than
the others because they did not feel as out of the loop when they returned. Often these students
drop out or never catch up because of the time that missed in class.
During this technology facilitation the coach learned how much work it is to try and
change the mind of some people they work with. The coach learned how much patience they
need to have in the position of technology leader. She also learned how hard it is to work with
people who do not communicate well. This experience taught her how to talk to people in order

to get them to cooperate with them. The coach recommended that everyone learn how to
communicate well and have patience before they complete this experience. This experience
related to that experience needed as a technology coach. The capstone required the coach to
teach a new skill to teachers. Technology coaches are required to be able to learn new skills and
teach them in a manner in which all teachers can learn. The knowledge needs by a technology
coach was similar to what was required in this project because of the patience and hard work that
the capstone project took. The job of a technology coach is stay on top of new technologies and
to help guide their teachers on how to use them. This capstone required the coach to do this
when they had to teach their fellow teachers and students how to use and navigate the D2L
system. The coach had to ensure that at all times, the digital content that was being used was
appropriate for the students and the level of difficulty needed. The D2L system allowed for an
excellent blended and online learning environment because it allowed students to learn and have
support for the face to face classroom in on online format.
