Day 1
Sponge Activity 5 minutes (activity that will be done as students enter the room to get them
into the mindset of the concept to be learned )
Have music playing as students walk in and encourage them to dance along
to get their heart rate up. While students are dancing, perform active role call
(taking attendance during activity) to keep flow and get optimal performance
out of class time.
Activating Prior Knowledge 4 minutes (what information will be shared with/among students
to connect to prior knowledge/experience)
Have students finish their warm up and bring them into the middle. Ask
students what they know about dancing and see how many different styles of
dance they can come up with.
Anticipatory Set 5 minutes (focus question/s that will be used to get students thinking about the
days lesson)
Ask students if they have ever line danced and if anyone would like to
demonstrate. Then without instruction do a small minute long demo to get
students excited for what theyre about to learn.
Direct Instruction 16 minutes (input, modeling, check for understanding)
Have students line up in rows of 5 all over the gym floor, set out poly spots for
ease in creating formation
Teach students the 4 basic steps, allowing 4 minutes for each one.
First 8 Counts (Grapevine)
Grapevine to the Right (step with Right foot to the right side, Left foot
steps behind the Right, step Right foot to the side and Left foot closes
Step with Right foot diagonally to the front. Close with Left foot. Clap on

close.
- Step right, touch
Step with Left foot diagonally to the front. Close with Right foot. Clap on
close.
- Step left, touch
Repeat diagonally with the Right foot.
Repeat diagonally with the Left foot.

Standing in place,
Move Right hand to Right thigh.

Guided Practice 10 minutes (how students will demonstrate their grasp of new learning)
Go through the four steps while using cues without music once, then have
students go through the steps with music, repeating until the end of the song
and then try it again.
While students are dancing for the dance without music and the dance with

music, stand in front of the class and continue to model for further guidance.
On the second dance with music, begin to walk around and assess students
ability to complete dance moves along with the beat of the music.
Closure 5 minutes(action/statement by teacher designed to bring lesson presentation to an
appropriate close)
Have students circle up for a cool down stretch and review the days lesson by
having students say what their favorite dance move was.
Independent Practice (what students will do to reinforce learning of the lesson)
Have students think of their own dance move that they will teach the class the
next day, encourage them to be as creative as possible.
