Unit Title: Football Biomechanics

Name: Roger Abifadel

Content Area: Physical Education

Grade Level: 9th-12th

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):

1.3: Identify, explain, and apply the skill-related components of balance, reaction time, agility, coordination, explosive
power, and speed that enhance performance levels in aquatic, rhythms/dance, and individual and dual activities
1.12 Demonstrate independent learning of movement skills.
3.5 Develop personal goals to improve ones performance in physical activities.
Big Ideas:

Ball Grip
Weight Transfer
Follow Through
Accuracy

Unit Goals and Objectives:

Students will be able to throw the ball to intended target 8 out of 10 times.
Students will be able to list and explain the 4 critical elements of throwing a football.
Students will be able to recognize the difference between proper throwing mechanics and poor throwing mechanics.
Students will be able to perform throwing a football after seeing it modeled by a teacher.

Unit Summary:

In order to be an effective quarterback, an individual must learn the basic foundation of a precise, strong overhand
throw. There are three obstacles that come with throwing a pass to the intended target; overcoming pressure from the
defensive line, being able to precisely hit the target without the cornerbacks intercepting the ball, and being able to hit
a receiver in stride. The students will research the critical features and cues of throwing the football to the intended
target so they will know proper technique, and the biomechanics behind throwing a football. There will also be
instructional videos provided on the links on the side of the page to provide advanced instruction. Most of all the
importance of this lesson is to have fun and experience what a quarterback goes through in a game like situation, and
possibly prepare students for becoming a quarterback of their football team.

Assessment Plan:
Entry-Level: Survey in which students
will be questioned as to who has thrown
a football before

Formative: Quiz on football biomechanics

of throwing, Flashcard with critical
elements of throwing/muscles targeted,
ranking critical elements from most
important to least important, and
peer/self check to monitor progress.

Summative: performance based test in

which students will perform the throw
and be graded based upon the rubric and
an summative exam tested upon football
throwing mechanics in a written test.

Lesson 1
Student Learning
Objective:

Students will be
able to throw the
ball to intended
target 8 out of 10
times.

Acceptable Evidence:
students will throw to
another student
hitting him 8/10 times
with proper
technique. Teacher
evaluates
performance.

Instructional
Strategies:
Communication
Collection
Collaboration
Presentation
Organization
Interaction

Lesson Activities:
Summative assessment where teacher grades based upon
the rubric and that theyre executing the skill correctly.

Lesson 2
Student Learning
Objective:

Acceptable Evidence:

Instructional
Strategies:
Communication
Collection
Collaboration
Presentation
Organization
Interaction

Lesson Activities: Formative assessment as well as

summative where students pair up and throw to one another
using 4 of the critical elements. For the summative
assessment they will explain those elements that also appear
of the peer check list they completed in the earlier activity.

Acceptable Evidence:
Students will
complete a written
exam where they
watch a video then
state if its proper or
improper form.

Instructional
Strategies:
Communication
Collection
Collaboration
Presentation
Organization
Interaction

Lesson Activities:
Powerpoint project in which they analyze form as well as the
summative assessment where they take an exam after
watching clips then analyzing the form.

Students will be
able to list and
explain the 4 critical
elements of
throwing a football.
Lesson 3
Student Learning
Objective:

Students will be
able to recognize
the difference
between proper
throwing mechanics
and poor throwing
mechanics.
