Dear Mike Wallace:
RE: GISC9305D1 CAD and GIS Assignment #1
The purpose of this deliverable is to gain a basic practical familiarity with
COGO, demonstrate an ability to create and assign object classes, as well as
clean up a drawing in AutoCAD Map 3D. The updated base drawing and
associated procedures for this deliverable were completed as noted in the
terms of reference. The process for updating an existing parcel base for a
new subdivision has been proven useful in solidifying my knowledge of
AutoCAD Map 3D and further enhances my ability to perform like a GIS
expert.
Should you require further information, please do not hesitate to contact me
at your convenience. I look forward to your comments and suggestions on
this deliverable.
Sincerely,
Marc Mancino

1.0 - Introduction
The scope of this project revolves around using a powerful
application called AutoCAD Map 3D. AutoCAD Map 3D is an
application that provides access to the tools required for mapping
and manipulating data, whether it is to create something new or to
update an existing project. The purpose of this project is to add a
new subdivision to an existing parcel land base in the City of St.
Catharines. A single line road network will be drawn into this new
subdivision with its respective object data for address numbers. All
of the drawing is completed using the COGO function. The COGO
function uses quadrant direction, bearing, and distance to accurately
determine where a line will be drawn.

2.0 - Methodology
2.1 - Drawing
The first step in beginning to create the new subdivision was by
selecting horizontal control point with the ID: 3820000009,
Easting of 644607.530, and Northing of 4778792.227. The point
command was then used to allocate the preceding Easting and
Northing UTM coordinates to indicate the start location for the
drawing. The line function was selected and intercepted by the
COGO function to produce a line to the starting point for the
drawing. From there, the lines of each block for the new subdivision
were drawn using COGO.

2.2 - Single Line Road Network

The line drawing tool was used to create a Single Line Road Network
that branches off of Moffat Street, the main street that runs along
the addition of the subdivision. It was created to represent the
addition of Glory Hill Road and Hilts Court.

2.3 - Line Work Clean Up

Once the new subdivision was drawn in, the old parcel lines were
stretched to the new subdivision lines due to them being more
accurate. Old name labels were deleted due to misplacement and the
unappealing look they gave the map. Some of the old parcel lines
were deleted because they overlapped parts of the subdivision where
the entrance to Glory Hill Road would be. Due to the new subdivision
replacing some property, the leftover floating address labels were
removed.

2.4 - Object Data

The object data was defined for the streets following the ON1Call
Map Standards & Procedures Mapping Data Management: Road
Network File Structure table on Page 5. The object data was then
attached to each street that applied.

2.5 - Dynamic Annotation

Three annotation templates were created: one for Street Name,
Street Suffix and the newly added addresses. The block editor was
used to assign and save the names for each template so that the
object data could be used to properly label the street names, suffixes
and address numbers. After they were inserted into the map, they
were aligned and configured to an aesthetic and professional format.

2.6 - Creating an Object Class

After consulting A Practical Guide to AutoCAD Map 3D 2015, an
object class was created for the Streets layer defining the colour, line
type, and attribute data for the Single Line Road Network.

2.7 - Metadata
Due to technical difficulties, the metadata was not accessible in the
64-bit version of AutoCAD Map 3D 2013. To bypass this issue, the 32bit version was accessed through the VMware Client (remote access)
and all the necessary information, according to the terms of
reference, was added.

3.0 - Findings
This deliverable expressed the ability to draw very accurately with
the many tools AutoCAD Map 3D has to offer. The task of drawing in
AutoCAD is a tedious one, but it has the potential to produce
aesthetically pleasing and professional looking drawings. The
accessibility to such a powerful piece of software can be extremely
useful in many real world applications.

4.0 - Issues
Every deliverable comes well equipped with issues. The first issue
was access to the metadata. The 64-bit version of AutoCAD was
preventing access to the metadata viewer by automatically closing
the program upon attempting to access it. To combat that issue, the
32-bit version, accessed through the VMware Client (remote access),
was opened. This allowed for the completion of the metadata. The
second issue was creating the professional layout in AutoCAD.
Previous experience creating map layouts, such as in ArcMap, made
working with an engineer-designed layout editor a nightmare. After
working with the program and fellow colleagues, layout creation was
deciphered.

5.0 - Recommendations
This deliverable would probably be more beneficial without the
exhausting task of producing a technical memorandum in addition
to the drawing. More lessons could be learned with more practical
experience in the program than in a report describing our
experience. Deadlines are a real world restraint, but makes for an
uncomfortable learning environment.

6.0 - Conclusions
After completing the requirements for this deliverable, it can be
concluded that AutoCAD Map 3D has many useful tools for creating
and manipulating drawings. It can produce aesthetically pleasing
and professional looking layouts for distribution in any real world
application involving spatial data. It has expanded our knowledge
base and enhanced our ability to perform like a GIS expert.
