On March 6.2007, Patrol Officer Travis Long. representing the Orange Beach Police
Department (OBPO) in Orange Beach, Alabama, made inquiry about the program from the
287g website. The request for infonnation was forwarded to Assistant Special Agent in Charge
"'---_ _ _---". to make preliminary contact with the department. On June 11,2007, '---_ _
-- spoke with about the OBPD inquiry and learned the department was
interested in training a few patrol officers.
OBPD responds to a tourist season influx in the 10eaJ Hispanic population augmented by some
demonstrable increases in European temporary workers. OBPO has very limjted Spanish
language translation ability. They have sufficient training facilities and downtime for officers
to allend 287g (raining would not be problematic. OBPD is falniliar wirh contacting LESC via
the NLETS system and they currently transport alien detainees to Daphne. Alabama, which is
an under 72 hour immigration detention facility.
'--_ _ _..... fully explained the 287(g) program, including the scope. limitations and
responsibilities; the time and financial commitments necessary for success, and the 01 and
ORO resources available to support the OBPO request. OBPO falls within the AOR of (he
ASAC Mobile. The nearest DRO resources are located approximately two hours distance in
New Orleans, Louisiana, and approximately four hours distance in Gadsden. Alabama.
