A Case Study on Making Costume
as a Medium of Cultural Information Industry

ABSTRACT
‘The promotion of high value added cultural products is an important issue in 2,000's years, a period of
cultural information, The purpose of this study is to suggest an empirical case that costume is a valuable
‘medium of cultural information industry through making Egyptian Costume for the exhibition of
"Splendour of Ancient Egypt’ at Seoul Art Center fromJune 4 to July 20,1997 .
For the purpose of this study, the descriptive and analytical perspectives were reviewed to record the
procedure of making Egyptian costume and to identify the aesthetic characteristics of Egyptian costume,
To collect and verify the sources for making Egyptian costume, the researcher visited to museums in
Egypt and reviewed the books and articles related to Egyptian art and costume, Within the framework
of cultural and social context, 30 figures were selected for making Egyptian costume,
‘The results are summarized as follows:
First, the representation and installation of 30 pairs of Egyptian costume proved to be more valuable
and interesting as a medium of cultural information about Egypt than any other exhibition of real relics
and replicas to spectators,
Second, the aesthetic conscious of Egyptian has formed a unique convention with consistency and
continuity. This traditionality has melted into Egyptian costume like other artistic area, An aesthetic
characteristics could be categorized as the symbolism for the immortality of the soul, the mysticism

related to the shamanism, a desire for having a baby, longevity, etc., and the geometric abstraction to
express innate purity with artistic impulse.
