What significant meanings does the discovery of specific burial goods have and imply in the context of world history? Reconstructing a certain ancient society, it is an important issue to identify and investigate the foreign elements from the cultural heritages of the society. Foreign elements are the reflections of the cultural contacts between different regions and can be clear traces of cultural exchanges between different people. This paper attempts to focus on searching for the foreign elements in the 4th ~ Sth century A.D. Korea. Gold and Glass objects as burial goods were excavated in a great quantity mainly from the distinct tomb structure of Old Silla employing wooden chambers and stone mounds. The design of certain burial goods, particularly that of gold crowns strongly suggests the influx of culture from the steppe region, via northeastern China, into the Silla Kingdom during the 4th to Sth century A.D, It is said to be that there was a great movement among nomadic people in the Eurasean continent of the 4th century like Hun's migration to the west occured in 375 A.D. We may consider seriously the activities and influences of nomadic people to the West and to the East as well Gold and Glass objects of the age both seem to manifest the fact that they are surely engaged with the activities and trades of the northern nomadic people, as we could detect lots of nomadic elements in them. And traces of Western motives ~ Greek and even Egyptian - were presented in many gold ornaments made in Silla, well-known land of plenty of gold. A great hoard of glass vessels manufactured at the Eastern Mediterranean region and identified as a Late Roman Glass group seemed to be dilivered to the far end of Asian continent, Kyongju of Korean peninsular via northern steppe route, At least, nine types of roman glass vessels with ~ 156 ABSTACT different decorative motives and techniques are recognized within the imported group of glass wares in Korea. Many examples of their pararells found through the so-called silk road-steppe route are the undeniable evidence of the silk road trade of that age. My assumption in this paper is Gold and Glass of Silla Kingdom would be considered together investigating their cultural origins. Culturally, roots of Korean gold objects can be traced back to Egypt and Greek & Roman art in the West, And considering technological interaction between gold workers and glass makers and possibility of technology and styles come together, we can presume that Gold and Glass in ancient Korea would have the same cultural background Silla culture seemed to be open to the world and Silla people might take an important role in the silk road trade. Through the outside contacts they could accumulate the potencial energy which finally enabled them to accomplish the unification of Korean peninsular. We need to try to understand the world-wide network system of the cultural exchanges in the ancient world
