This semester you will further develop your use of language as a tool for thinking and learning.
English 10 reinforces and continues emphasis on a given canon of literature and critical,
reflective, and imaginative response to the literature. We will be working from the Holt
Elements of Literature and Elements of Language texts.

We will be focusing on:

on Fridays. The words will typically come from our reading or grammar
units.
In-class novelsWe will read one novel, Tuesdays with Morrie by
Mitch Albom, the second nine weeks. You will be responsible for some
outside of class reading. Expect projects/quizzes/writing assignments
related to this novel in May.
Literature Book
JanuaryCollection 6Symbolism/Allegory/PoetryWe will learn
about a variety of poets and poetic forms/devices. You will be asked to
analyze poems and create some of your own.

supplemental materials, will be used to prepare for the ECA test in May.
MayECA test in early May; after the test, we will begin Tuesdays with

Writing assignmentsWe will follow the writing process very closely
this semester and will write often. You will be expected to submit
rough drafts for most projects, along with an occasional peer
evaluation and teacher review. All revisions should show evidence of
proofreading and editing. I will help you determine what constitutes a
solid piece of writing. In addition, the ECA writing rubric will be used
for most major assignments.
Language ConventionsWe will continue to use the language
conventions mastered from semester I. Assessment will take place in
the form of practice work, writing, and quizzes.
In addition:
Journal entriesYou are required to write an entry in your journal on
the days assigned. Journals need to be a spiral-bound notebook or a
separate folder, to be kept in the classroom. Bring them in as soon
as possible! Journals are worth ten points each. We usually end up
with around 30 journals by the end of the semester.)
