How To Use Oncology MKSAP,

Third Edition
The third edition of Oncology MKSAP is designed to meet
the needs of a wide variety of readers. Recognizing that
readers have different learning styles and that users of
Oncology MKSAP have different goals, ASCO developed
this educational resource to be used in a variety of ways.
We provide here recommendations for optimizing this
self-assessment tool to meet your specific needs.

If you are preparing for an American Board of Internal

Medicine (ABIM) subspecialty examination
Oncology MKSAP is an excellent tool to help you prepare
for an ABIM certification or recertification examination.
We recommend that you first identify your areas of
strengths and weaknesses by taking one of the practice
tests (located at the back of the book) before reading any
chapters. Your review of the answers to this practice test
will help you determine which chapters you should study
most closely. You should then read each chapter, take the
multiple choice test that follows, and review the explanatory answers. You can reassess your knowledge and preparedness for the examination by taking the additional
two practice tests. These practice tests include 60 random
questions to simulate an actual ABIM test module. To

iv

simulate test conditions even more closely, allow yourself

only two hours to complete the test.
If you are a practicing oncologist seeking a self-education program
Oncology MKSAP is also an excellent resource to help you
review and evaluate your knowledge about the latest research,
best practices, and standards of care in all oncology-related
areas. We recommend that you read each chapter, take the
multiple choice test that follows, and review the explanatory
answers. This systematic review of the text will allow you to
focus on a specific area and gain a comprehensive understanding before studying another topic. The explanatory
answers and the lists of suggested reading will help to stimulate your interest in exploring issues beyond the scope of the
text. The practice tests at the back of the book will help to
further assess your knowledge on the subject matter.
You may also use Oncology MKSAP to earn category 1 credit
toward the American Medical Association (AMA)
Physicians Recognition Award (see page x). ASCO encourages all users, even those who are not requesting continuing
medical education (CME) credit, to submit the evaluation
so that future editions can be developed to best meet your
educational needs.
