Instructional Objective:
After a Prezi presentation on the ways to obtain U.S. citizenship, students will collaborate in groups and
use research materials to create an online Glogster containing at least three correct facts of each of the
four ways to become a U.S. citizen based on a rubric assessment.
Standards and Indicators
NYS Social Studies Standard 4.7a:
Immigrants came to New York State for a variety of reasons. Many immigrants arriving in New York City
were greeted by the sight of the Statue of Liberty and were processed through Ellis Island.
-Students will investigate the requirements for becoming a United States citizen.

Motivation
Teacher will dress up as a person from another country and discuss what life is like in that country and
discuss why she seeks to come to America and become an American citizen.

Strategies
Direct Instruction- Students will listen and watch a Prezi presentation focusing on the four ways to
obtain U.S. citizenship.
Group Discussion- Students will actively engage in collaborative discussion with group members,
asking each other questions about the process of immigration and becoming a citizen in America.
Modeling Guided Practice- Teacher will model the steps to creating an online Glogster sign of ways to
obtain citizenship.
Adaptations

The student with a specific grapho-motor disability will be provided with a scribe for writing
assignments or an iPad with voice to talk application.

The student with a visual impairment will sit in front of the classroom and be provided with larger
text materials and worksheets.
The student with Autistic Spectrum Disorder will work with an aide/teacher assistant and behavior
plan to stay on task.
The student who has a learning disability in writing will be provided with a buddy note taker.
The student who has a disability in reading will be provided an audio tape of the textbook chapter.
The student who is an English Language learner will be provided with pertinent vocabulary words
prior to the lesson, scaffolded lesson notes and extra time if necessary.
Differentiation of Instruction

Tier I- Students will be given a copy of the Prezi presentation with pertinent information highlighted.
Students will also receive a graphic organizer to organize each of the four citizenship methods into
sections after viewing the Prezi presentation. Students will also be given a sample Glogster to follow.
Tier II-Students will receive a graphic organizer to organize each of the four citizenship methods into
sections after viewing the Prezi presentation.
Tier III-Students will view Prezi presentation, collaborate with group members and independently
complete Glogster.
Developmental Procedures
Key vocabulary: U.S. citizen by birth, naturalization, acquired citizenship, derived citizenship,
green card
Key Questions: How do you become a U.S. citizen? Is there more than one way to become a U.S. citizen?

Teacher will pose the key question, how do you become a citizen of the United States of
America?
Students will turn and talk to a partner and discuss possible responses to the question
Teacher will create a Thinking Maps Circle Map of students responses for students to copy.
Students will listen to a Prezi Presentation, including the four ways to obtain U.S. citizenship
discussing key vocabulary and detailed steps for each way to obtain citizenship.
After engaging in the Prezi presentation, students will complete a scaffolded outline of
information given in Prezi Presentation.
Teacher will ask, If you are born in the United States, are you automatically a citizen? Will having
one parent born in the United States give you citizenship?
Teacher will model online Glogster to guide student through the process of creating a Glogster and
reviewing the rubric using for grading.
Students will collaborate into groups, choosing one of the methods of citizenship and will use
research materials to create an online Glogster of one way to become a U.S. citizen.
Assessment

While in groups, students will create an online Glogster, each group focusing on one of ways to become a
U.S. citizen based on a rubric.
Students will match key concepts with their correct description using the Smart Board.
Independent Practice
Following the lesson on becoming a U.S. citizen, students will go on the United States Citizenship and
Immigration website (www.uscis.gov) and research answers to the sample civics test needed for
naturalization.
