Lesson Topic: Addition and Subtraction

Lesson Title: Fun with Numbers

Author: Lauren Gallegos
Introduction: The learners will be a group of students who are five years and up, technology savvy and some
of them do not have computers in their homes. These students will be allowed to come to class early, stay late,
take home school laptops, go to the library or have CDs of the videos.
Grade Level: Kindergarten
Integrated DisciplinesContent area: Number Sense, Properties, and Operations
Technology: Games, Instructional Videos
Standards:
Content Area(s) Standards and Grade Level Standards
Standard: 1. Number Sense, Properties, and Operations
2. Composing and decomposing quantity forms the foundation for addition and subtraction
a. Model and describe addition as putting together and adding to, and subtraction as taking apart and taking
from, using objects or drawings. (CCSS: K.OA)
i. Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings, sounds,6 acting out
situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations. (CCSS: K.OA.1)
ii. Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10.7 (CCSS: K.OA.2)
iii. Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 into pairs in more than one way.8 (CCSS: K.OA.3)
iv. For any number from 1 to 9, find the number that makes 10 when added to the given number.9 (CCSS:
K.OA.4)
v. Use objects including coins and drawings to model addition and subtraction problems to 10 (PFL)
Integrated disciplines (NETS)
NETS-S
a. Understand and use technology systems
NETS-T
b. Develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual
curiosities and become active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning,
and assessing their own progress
Objectives
Students will be able to add and subtract numbers that are less than or equal to ten by practicing with
educational games and instructional videos to complete a worksheet with counting manipulatives.

Assessment

The teacher will assess the results of the educational addition and subtraction game practice and will provide a
worksheet for the students to complete during class. They will also check for comprehension of the instructional
videos at the beginning of class.

1. Anticipatory Set: Answer word problem on white board
Ex: If I have three apples and I give one to my friend, how many do I have left?
2. Review Instructional Videos from homework
3. Do practice addition & subtraction problem 1+2=3, 4+6=10
4. Split into pairs
5. Work on worksheet with manipulatives
6. Have students ask questions
7. Discuss learning in group
What teacher is to do:
Find Instructional Videos

Find Educational Games

Plan Lesson
Provide help during class time
What students are to do:
Watch Instructional Videos
Practice Educational Games
Work on worksheet during class
Differentiation
Challenge Students:
Students who need more of a challenge during the lesson can start to do addition and subtraction problems that
equal higher than ten. They can keep advancing to higher numbers while using the counting manipulatives and
can write their number problems on the back of their worksheet.
ELL Students:
Students whose first language is not English will be paired with a peer who does well and who is outgoing.
They can get help from their partner and can count in whatever language they feel comfortable with and then
can fill out the worksheet with their partner. They can also have a different sheet that has the equations in
picture form if they are visual learners.
Students with Learning Disabilities:
Students with diagnosed learning disabilities can have an easier sheet of equations to work on with a partner.
They will be paired with another student who needs a simplified version. They will work on the equations
together and can have an answer key that shows the problem with pictures and has the answers covered but
available.
Closure
How you plan to end the lesson so that students retain learning?
I plan to end the lesson with each group answer one of the equations and going over how they got their answers.
Then we will come together as a group to talk about what each of them learned in the lesson to check for
comprehension and to help them retain learning.
What will really send the point home and force the information into students long term memory?
The students will remember this lesson because it is very game oriented and they will get to have fun doing the
lesson and will learn in the process. They will get to work online and in class on the equations and will have
time to ask questions and express their thoughts.

Explanation
I chose these specific technology activities for this lesson because I think the videos I found were good
at going through the equations rather than just giving an answer. I also liked how the videos were sort of word
problems and they made for better visuals for the students. They are effectively integrated because the students
will get to play the games at home so that I can check their comprehension and then they will get to use their
skills to complete their class worksheet. The technology will enhance their learning because it will teach them
how to do the work and then they will have time to focus on it in a social setting and they will also have time to
ask the teacher questions. I researched the lesson by looking at what other teachers have already done and I
watched several different videos of math for kids before deciding which ones to use for my lesson. I also watch
the videos about flipped learning to get an idea of what kind of lesson this would be and how to go about
making the lesson.
