The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, by Sean Covey

1. Be Proactive (Take responsibility for your life)
2. Begin with the End in Mind (Define your mission and goals in life)
3. Put First Things First (Prioritize, and do the most important things first)
4. Think Win-Win (Have an everyone-can-win attitude)
5. Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood (Listen to people sincerely)
6. Synergize (work together to achieve more)
7. Sharpen the Saw (Renew yourself regularly)
Inside out (Norming)
This is a great initial problem solving activity. Begin with a Raccoon Circle (15 foot long rope, tied into a circle) on the floor.
Have the entire group step inside the circle. The task now is for the entire group to go from the inside of the circle to the outside, by
going underneath the Raccoon Circle, without anyone in the group using their arms, shoulders, or hands.
What is important in this activity, is to stress the group problem solving process. In order for other members of the group to assist in the
completion of the task, they need to know the plan, and what their part is in the solution.
To this end, encourage the group to plan their work and then work their plan. This means that prior to ANY action, the group will
need to plan their approach to solving this problem, and making sure that everyone in the group knows their part of the plan.
As a second part to this activity, you can also ask the group to go Outside In, again without using their hands, arms or shoulders.... and see if
they plan their work before working their plan.
Cross the Line
This activity requires a single straight line. With half the group on one side of the line and standing about 6 feet behind the line, and the other
half of the team on the other side.
You have 3 seconds to get the person across the line from you onto your side of the line. GO!
This scenario sets up the possibility for a win-win, a win-lose and a lose-lose situation
Volunteers to work on Logos and Posters for Leadership/LAUNCH
Reflection:
What did you learn about leadership in the 2 day workshop?
Things you want to work on for yourself?
What do you think we NEED to do in Launch? (these are the combined responses)
Many roads lead to Rome, but I think that building the group as more of a group of friends, rather than a group that was put together

randomly is crucial. I want my pod to be able to lean on and contact each other as opposed to just me.
Casual Conversations
Strong dynamic of Squads
Encourage pod interaction (students only)
Big team games (Frisbee)
Sprinkle in a deep talk or twolearn about your pod
Establish contact methods: group text/message for easy conversing
#fugitives for field trips
Maybe get a way to involve the freshmens teachers in this
Befriend freshmen
Set goals with individual students for GPA or activities, help plan and achieve them
Get freshmen involved outside of school
Really connect with my pod and be able to make a difference going forward for their high school experience as well as outside of school
Have outside activities with our squads and pods
Loads of team bonding
Get everyone comfortable by sharing ideas
School essentials (Lunch, PE, lockers)
Just a lot of opportunities to talk
Squad/Pod activities
Leadership sessions (for us) to better our skills and bond and have fun
Let people know stuff (graphic stuff)
Gain trust between students to that when real problems occur, they will feel safe coming to us
Make sure we stress the importance of freshmen year grades
Ease the stressful transitions into high school, through offering answers and making sure that theyll be fine
Emphasize the importance of good grades (dont lighten/make high school seem not as bad, make sure they know they will have to put in
same work)
Human knot
Ultimate Frisbee
Academics over social life at times
Talk about sport-life but also life in the arts/music because that is often forgotten
Make sure the members of the pod are close, not just my relationship with each member but their relationship with each other
I think it is crucial that we do fun activities outside of school with our squads and pods, such as an ultimate Frisbee tournament or bowling
together. I think this is important so that the freshmen dont just think of us as some senior they have to work with, they instead trust us as
their friend, so we can build a better relationship with them

Lots of relationship building: ice breakers, activities that get kids excited to be in Launch, getting out and around the school, pinpointing
insecurities that freshmen have and making a game plan
Establishing trust
Making it fun, yet serious program that actually helps with the confidence and school
Go outside of the school and get together
Get together with other pods
Squad trips (period 5 and 7)
Potluck
Connect w/freshmen
Have them develop positive habits
Do some of the team building activities we did in the hallway
Show each other that everyone is different and that different strengths and weaknesses can help benefit the group
I think we should play heads up (stereotype game)
Back to back drawing activity
I think we should definitely play games at the start of LAUNCH. Games that have slightly competitive is great way to make a more
introverted people (like me) feel included as well as important
Need time early on to be with the pod and talk without doing an ice breaker (ice breaker can create forced conversations sometimes so I think
we have to be careful with how much we force the ice breakers vs. just talking to them)
Talking about college too early could scare them but is definitely important
Try to get them to try new things or join a variety of clubs
Build relationshipscomfort, trust, liability
Play games like mission impossible to where you Have to get everyone involved or else you wont succeed
Push freshmen out of their comfort zone (even if it is just a little)
We must have a whole group, not squad, but group get together and do a ton of activities so the freshmen can meet a ton of different people
and really get into what the group is all about

Theme of the day: LISTENING and COMMUNICATION

Readings--7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens (please see the PDF Attachment)
Shared Leadership Strengths, Areas to Improve, Most Excited about from Google Doc (email sent prior to workshop)
Leadership Strengths
I'm empathetic, confident, and intelligent

- Communication - Learn and Evolve - Problem Solver

My top 3 from the strengths quality quiz were achiever, empathy, and input. These combined allow me to strive for success along with understanding
people. I have a tendency to talk to the quiet kids in a group to make them feel more comfortable.
1) I'm good at focusing on a goal and getting others to focus on that goal 2) I'm good at working with people and in groups 3) I can be assertive when
I need to be but if I don't then I'm not
1. Focused 2. Motivating 3. Hardworking
My strongest leadership attributes are assessing problems and brainstorming solutions for them to improve situations, listening to others and
cooperating so everyone's voice is heard, and having the determination to continue leading in adverse situations.
I lead by example. I give positive feedback not negative. I'm willing to do certain things that others won't want to do.
I believe my three strongest leadership skills/attributes are organization, communication and confidence.
-Organized -Keep group on task -Include others' ideas
-My ability to respectfully lead and relate to people, reading the moods and wants of those I am with -My ability to make quick and strong decisions
in serious situations and back up those decisions. -My ability to quickly build trust in a group of people and rationally parse out arguments for easy
resolutions
Staying On task . Keeping the people around in a good atmosphere. Motivational
1. I am social and feel comfortable talking to everyone. 2. I am good at organizing people in order to solve a problem. 3. I always work hard, which
encourages others to follow suit.
Determination Confidence Kindness
The ability to take charge in a situation, the ability to notice good work someone is doing and praise them for it, the ability to take and receive
information and use it later to help me in the same type of situation
Energetic Outgoing Approachable
Enthusiastic Communication Responsibility
-Empathy -Innovation -Context
I believe my three strongest leadership attributes are my honesty, my ability to communicate, and my positive attitude.
Collecting input from others Empathizing Acknowledging potential in others
I think things through so that everyone involved in whatever is happening receives a positive outcome I respect others boundaries and needs I'm
organized and efficient
Areas to Improve
I would like to improve on my ability to reach out to more people and have a stronger influence outside of the circle of people that I normally interact
with. I find it difficult to maintain the balance of being a positive influence without sounding like I'm preaching to people.
Help make sure everyone else is on the same page and make sure everyone knows what to accomplish by the end of the day/ session/ class
- Motivational / Inspirational Skills

Following up with whatever I do and being consistent

My level of patience
Knowing when to be a leader and when to be a friend.
I would like to improve most on the way I can lead so that I am respected and liked, as opposed to being either well liked but not listened to or
listened to but resented.
I'd like to learn how to approach people better. Sometimes I'm even blind to people who don't directly ask for help.
I think I need to improve on being confident in myself and being sure of my ideas and not being so paranoid that others won't approve of my
thoughts.
-To standout among other leaders
The aspect of leadership which I would like to improve the most is speaking up in large groups where I don't necessarily know everyone, or know
them well.
Guiding others
I really strive to be a consistent person, but that aspect definitely challenges me, so I would want to improve on my consistency as a leader.
I hope to improve by ability to delegate.
Being more organized Not procrastinating
Most Excited About.
I am most excited about working on my weakness as a leader. I think that talking to the freshman will give me an opportunity to try to be relatable
and form a good relationship with them while still being a positive influence.
Getting to know the freshman I'm mentoring and just being apart of their freshman experience.
Learning how to help younger people and being a role model for them
I am hoping that I become a role model to the students and that they look forward to seeing me in this class.
I am excited to be a part of this new class and to see how it's going to impact the students that get mentored.
Applying what we learn
I am most excited about getting the chance to directly apply my skills with OPRF freshmen and leading them through the difficulties of their first
high school experiences.
I am most excited about created the course of this class for the future. I've also always wanted a way to become a mentor of some type, and that
excites me, knowing I'll be helping people throughout the school year.
Just getting to help other people and show them the right way to do things because many of them don't know how to lead or what to do in leadership
type situations.
I am most excited about learning new methods of leadership and becoming a better leader.
I am most excited about working with younger students and improving my communication skills, especially in a classroom setting.
To meet new people and shed some light on high school

I want to help a younger student get on the right path and make their transition into high school smooth. Hopefully they will be able to achieve their
goals and I will be able to have a hand in that.
I'm most excited about being able to work with the freshman and hopefully make a positive impact on how they use their leadership skills.
Meeting & Helping all the incoming freshmen.
Having conversations with people I might not normally talk to
I am most excited about receiving an objective view of my strengths and weaknesses through this class; and using this objective view to improve my
mentoring and team skills. The ability to positively impact the incoming freshman through this class is an exciting prospect.
Making a name for myself within OPRF and being remembered when the incoming freshmen become seniors
I am really excited about working with my peers and being a person they can look up to and be a reliable resource for them as they enter high school.
Getting a chance to pass on the things I have learned in my high school experience to freshman, and hopefully make their time in high school more
enjoyable
