Encourages students to
work together in groups
and emphasizes the
importance of
cooperation rather than
competition in solving
academic problems and
completing assignments.

A fundamental cognitive
process, that includes
various activities that
help students see
patterns and make
connections.

When teachers use the

development of nonlinguistic
representations (Visual Imagery,
Auditory, or Kinesthetic/Whole
Body) with students the effect is
strong. The goal is for students
to retain and recall important
information.

A focused strategy
used to increase
understanding as a way
for students to
practice existing
knowledge and skills
and to introduce new
subject material and
ideas. This strategy
works for all subjects
in all grade levels
because it meets the
student where they
are in their learning.
There is a higher
positive achievement
when used by teachers.

A cognitive strategy to
help students learn and
retain information and
organizing learning.

Fine tuning questions

with higher order
thinking questions that
require analysis, sets
the stage for learning
and helps students
focus on what they are
about to learn.

Note: Encourages
interpersonal and small
group skills
(Communication, trust,
leadership, decision
making and conflict
resolution.)

Note: Students can

use graphic or symbolic
representations of
similarities and
differences,
classification systems,
comparisons and
analogies. Examples
include: Venn Diagrams,
Comparison Tables and
Charts, Hierarchical
Taxonomies and Linked
Maps.

Note: Images should be in the

classroom on the walls. Teach
students to represent and
interpret information in graphs,
charts, maps and other format
that will help them see patterns
and make connections. Stimulate
kinesthetic learning through
physical activities and
dramatizations. Use Descriptive
Pattern and Time Sequence
Pattern Organizers.

Note: Students should

receive written
feedback. Basic
formula for length of
homework to assign is
10 minutes per grade
level. Appropriate
parental involvement
facilitates homework
completion. Mastery
requires focused
practice over days or
weeks.

Note: KWL chart that

lists what students
know, what they want
to know and what they
learned. Advance and
Graphic organizers help
students learn new
concepts, reinforces
vocabulary and
supports reading skills.

Note: Preview the big

picture and use
multiple modes to
connect with diverse
learning styles
visually with graphic
organizers, verbally
and in writing.
