Components must be correctly designed and dimensioned. The material must have a
yield point which is sufficiently high to cater for the stresses caused by inter
ference and external loads. It must not be porous; this is particularly relevant
when using cast iron or cast steel. Mating surfaces must have good accuracy of
form. Although fine-turning gives satisfactory surface finish, good accuracy of
form is more readily obtained by grinding. Care should be taken to ensure that c
omponents are not distorted during setting-up for machining. Scores and machinin
g marks (grinding flats etc.) extending to the ends of the mating surfaces canno
t be allowed, otherwise oil leakage will occur during mounting and dismounting a
nd thus prevent the application of the desired oil pressure in the joint. Edges
of oil grooves and the radius between the mating surfaces and side faces should
be smooth and weil rounded.

Where only one joint with tapered components is involved it is best to finish-ma
chine one of the tapered parts first and then use it as a gauge for the other pa
rt. The interference between the components is then independent of the manufactu
ring limits for tapered surfaces.

If large numbers of components are involved, they should be manufactured with th
e aid of fixtures and gauges to ensure interchangeability. If this is not done,
difficulties may arise if components become mixed together and when worn items h
ave to be replaced.

As already stated, in selecting material for components
e a sufficiently high yield point to eliminate the risk
nent deformation. The material for components subjected

Spheroidal graphite cast iron has been used successfuily in the manufacture of c
omponents to be mounted using the oil injection method. There are different grad
es, some with largely the same strength values as carbon steel which has been he
at-treated. The modulus of elasticity, however, is lower and must be taken into
account in all calculations.
