Central Idea of the Poem

Concentrates on Social injustice

and class inequalities
Describes the pathetic plight of
school children in a slum school
Expresses the poets outrage at
the audacity of the more
privileged class
Points out the moral
irresponsibility and callousness of
authorities of Education

PLIGHT OF THE SCHOOL CHILDREN

Deprived, impoverished
The world they see outside the
window is a narrow, sealed
gloomy sky of their slum.
Caught in a web of
poverty;condemned to a dismal
life for ever

Children in the slum

Emaciated
Unkempt
Thin, hungry
Weak, bony
Weighed down by legacy of
poverty
Distracted and exhausted
Live in perpetual haze of
gloom,
hopelessness

The portrait of
Shakespeare on the wall,
is just a picture on the
wall.
Presence meaningless
and out of the context of
the childrens existence.

Shakespeare is a symbol of
Learning, Art, Literature
The slum children should be
given meaningful education
They need to be unshackled
from their bonds of poverty
and led from their bleak world
into the wonderful world of
letters.

How to Solve?

Inspectors, Visitors, Governors

must realize their moral
responsibilities,

Must tear down the barriers that

stand in the way of the slum
children
They need to be released from
the narrow confines of their foggy
existence
Must be given appropriate
opportunities to explore the world,
find their place in the sun and be
counted as real.

Their Class room

Sour yellow walls
Grimy room
Donations of Maps,
Picture of
Shakespeare

Maps:- Rivers, Valleys,

Mountains show a
different world
Creates stirring,
yearnings in their
hearts, leaves them
disheartened,
dissatisfied
The pictures of domes
are meaningless and
irrelevant to their
existence.
