a candidate for the NDP in Toronto Centre.
Honourable Thomas Mulcair,
Sir, the reason for my letter is serious and detailed and we do expect a response.
Firstly, let us thank you for serving Canada as you have in various ways. Even though you and our
supporter base may disagree on much, we all are deeply appreciative and have no doubt of your love for
this country. We just think you are wrong.
Secondly, I wanted to introduce myself and the Alberta Business & Taxpayers Coalition (ABTC). My
name is Craig Chandler and I am the Executive Director of the ABTC which is Calgary's largest and
Alberta's fastest growing business and taxpayer's organization. Since 1992 we were known as the
Progressive Group for Independent Business (PGIB) and have recently changed our name due to
our expansion throughout the province. Also, writing this letter jointly with me is Paul Chinook who is an
established actor and entrepreneur in Alberta as well as serving as our Provincial Chair.
On Saturday, August 8, 2015 at 3:06 pm I called the office of Linda McQuaig (NDP Candidate for
Toronto Centre) based on her recent comments about Oil Sands in Canada and specifically Alberta. The
NDP Toronto Centre office at 416-657-2531 was the specific number that was called. The phone
conversation was on speaker and minutes were taken by our Executive Assistant, Joseph Zwiek and is
as follows:
Female Campaign Worker: Hello, this is the Linda McQuaig Campaign Office, How may I help you?
(Very polite and professional).
Craig Chandler: Is Linda McQuaig available?
Female Campaign Worker: No, I am sorry she is not available at the moment. Is there anything I could
do to help?
Craig Chandler: Well, I will explain who I am and my concerns. My name is Craig Chandler and I am
the Executive Director of the Alberta Business & Taxpayer's Coalition (ABTC). The ABTC is Calgary's
largest and Alberta's fastest growing business and taxpayer's organization and we have serious
concerns about what Linda McQuaig has been espousing about Alberta and more specifically the Oil
Sands.

Josh: (heard clearly in the background I will end this conversation quickly) Hello?
Craig Chandler: Yes this is Craig Chandler and I am the Executive Director of the Alberta Business &
Taxpayer's Coalition (ABTC). The ABTC is Calgary's largest and Alberta's fastest growing business and
taxpayer's organization and we have serious concerns about what Linda McQuaig has been espousing
about Alberta and more specifically the Oil Sands.
Josh: Oh I know what you are most likely referring to and that was never said.
Craig Chandler: Josh her comment of Alberta's oilsands may need to remain undeveloped in order for
Canada to meet its climate change targets and there should not be a rush to extract from the
oilsands.... And "A lot of the oilsands oil may have to stay in the ground if we're going to meet our
climate change targets" is very concerning. Josh, I am also concerned about your leader and his double
speak with saying different things in French and English Canada.
Josh: This is not true, look at the CBC website, as they changed it for us.
Craig Chandler: It was said and delivered via main stream media and social media. I can send you all
the links if you wish. I am frustrated that you are not taking my concerns seriously. If your party does
form government, you are supposed to represent all Canadians despite their choice on the ballot.
Josh: Oh just like Stephen Harper represented everyone of us right? Oh but, be rest assured, we are
taking your concerns seriously (Chuckling, rude and hostile).
Craig Chandler: Josh, I am not managing any campaign in this election. I am contacting you as an
Albertan with a legitimate concern. I may be personally voting Conservative, but, that is not what this
communication is about in any way.
Josh: Well there we go! (very hostile). As an Albertan your concerns are and will be irrelevant (Josh

There are several reasons you need to sincerely pay attention to this letter to you above and beyond
what was written about in the aforementioned comments. They are as follows:
1 - We are concerned about your personal inconsistency on Alberta, our resources and what you

Seriously Mr. Mulcair? Can you imagine if a social conservative used the language like this related to
morals and / or abortion? death and untold human misery? You need to deal with this sir!
Further, imagine if a Western Conservative candidate stated that we needed to cease operations or even
have a moratorium on Nickel production in Sudbury; Steel production in Hamilton or shutting down the
Auto Sector in Brampton, Windsor, Etobicoke, Oakville, Ingersoll, Oshawa, St. Catherines, Aliston,
Cambridge or Woodstock? Can you imagine if we demanded no more support for Bombardier or the
massive subsidization and support of the Dairy industry in Quebec? Sir, we all know you would be
ballistic at best in your response and defence. I would personally place money that you would be even
running radio, tv and even billboard ads that the West and the Conservatives betrayed you.
Mr. Mulcair, start representing all of Canada and not just Quebec, Toronto, Vancouver and the
Vancouver Island area codes.
3 We would like you to apologize for the continued disparging remarks about Alberta,
Saskatchewan and our energy sector from your various candidates. The following are comments from

Peterson the NDP candidate for Cypress Hills-Grasslands in Saskatchewan was aggressively
encouraging people to lobby Premier Christy Clark. He even indicates that he wants our resources to be

It is very unfortunate that the new Alberta NDP Premier Rachel Notley has been hiring those that are
anti-Alberta to run her office including Brian Topp who has said many derogatory things about Alberta
and our Oil Sands. Premier Notley (rightly or wrongly) is being seen as a mere tool for the federal NDP
in this race by not just Albertans, but Canadians including the 289, 365, 905, 226, 519, 343, 613 and
other area codes outside of the 416, 647 grip for the left.

What is actually lending credence to Premier Rachel Notley being a mere puppet of yours is the fact she
has not been defending Alberta against these attacks from the federal NDP. We have heard nothing and
she is supposed to represent our concerns and not yours. Her silence has been deafening and forced us
to write this letter and prepare for further action.
It is important to note that Premier Brad Wall of Saskatchewan has very strong views in support of the
energy industry as well and some of those articles are as follows:
"If standing up for my province and for an industry that creates thousands of jobs for western Canadians
is showboating, show me the bridge," Wall told CBC on Thursday, "because I'll do it every single time."

Mr. Mulcair, we have no hidden agenda. We have a website that makes it clear that we put Alberta First.
We take nothing for granted and you very well could be our next Prime Minister, but, like in the past
when Quebecois were leaders of the nation, the West was relegated to the sidelines as mere colonies,
your victory may force our hand and our departure from confederation.
One aspect of the debate I did agree with you on (and since you brought it up) We are in favour of 50%
plus 1 and unlike Quebec there is a growing feeling of real alienation and we can actually afford, if
managing our own future, to pay our share of the debt.
Do not get me wrong, we want Canada to work! We just believe in a Confederation of Equal Provinces
where no one province has special status or power over another.
Equalization is not working and Premier Brad Wall of Saskatchewan has a worthy perspective and at

Also, support of the Western Canadian Energy sector is not working when Canada is still getting Oil from
terrorist nations and not exclusively from their own country in Saskatchewan and Alberta. We have
ethical oil, not blood oil and this is factual. Do not relegate the truth to the sidelines.
It is time the West is treated better. We keep your warm at night with Natural Gas (and all its related
affiliates such as Propane, Butane etc) see the pipeline chart below.
It actually includes existing Oil and Natural Gas pipelines exiting from Alberta & Saskatchewan.
We really do not believe that Central Canada realizes how much of an energy player Alberta and
Saskatchewan are for the United States and Canada.
We want to work with the rest of our country, but, we see no indication because of your capitulation to
Quebec of that occurring.
The West is for Energy East and Ontario can be worked with and the Maritime Provinces are
overwhelming on side with us.

Alberta provides billions in Transfer payments. We also provide Canola, Barley, Rye, Sugar, Beets,
Wheat, Durum, Oats, Mixed grains, Triticale, Peas, Leguimes, Potatoes, Cucumbers, Squash, Turnip,
Brussel Sprouts, Tomatoes and almost every other vegetable you can think of! Our fruits are also varied
as well.
Alberta is the leading Beekeeping province of Canada, with some Beekeepers wintering hives indoors in
specially designed barns in Southern Alberta, then migrating north during the summer into the Peace
River Valley where the season is short but the working days are long for Honeybees to produce honey
from Clover and Fireweed. Hybrid Canola also requires Bee pollination and Alberta
Beekeepers service this need.
Lumber products from Alberta are also in the multi-billions of which 72% are exported around the world.
Financially, the TSE Venture Exchange is headquartered in Calgary, and Calgary also has a robust
service industry relating to the securities market. The city has the second highest number of corporate
head offices in Canada after Toronto, and the financial services industry in Calgary has developed to
support them.

Edmonton hosts the headquarters of the only major Canadian banks west of Toronto: Canadian Western
Bank and ATB Financial (Owned by the government of Alberta and has Alberta prepared to leave
confederation). The province wide credit Union called Servus is also headquarted in Edmonton with the
rapidly growing First Calgary Financial doing well in Calgary and area.
In regards to transportation Calgary, Alberta is the headquarters of the NON Union and never taxpayer
funded or subsidized airline called Westjet. Also, Canadian Pacific Railway moved its headquarters to
downtown Calgary in 1996.
The West is quickly diversifying with High tech jobs and even companies in the biotechnology sector
clustered around the University of Alberta such as ColdFX to drop a name.
I could continue on for some time, but this is just some of what we are offering to Canada and we
deserve to be encouraged.
We contribute a lot to confederation and mostly the only response we hear back is that in the past
Alberta was subsidized with the transfer payment scheme. You might be surprised how little Alberta has
ever seen.
Mr. Mulcair, you may not be aware, but, the West is fed up and I feel ignoring us will result in a
movement to bring Saskatchewan an Alberta out of confederation.
Central Canada has ignored our cries and we have tried within the confines of Confederation to
communicate with you. Whether it be the Reform Party when we said under Preston Manning that
The West Wants In to the leadership of Stephen Harper as Prime Minister, you still ignore the West.
You ignored us when we started organizing our own parties separate from the traditional ones such as
the Saskatchewan Party that defeated the your provincial counterpart and has now governed 8 years in
Saskatchewan with continuous surpluses. You ignored the new Wildrose Party in Alberta that has a
slogan of Putting Albertans First and is continuing to grow in influence. The West is waking up!
The fact that we have Free Trade agreements with other nations and do not yet have that with our own
nation frustrates the West. You can't when you have run Provinces in the Maritimes, Ontario, Manitoba,
Saskatchewan, British Columbia and now Alberta that have been governed by you say this has been a
priority. None of your governments have brought this up at any time.
The protectionism Ontario and more specifically Quebec has with Dairy, Poultry and other aspects of the
Supply Chain is disturbing. The West has Free Trade in a North & South direction with the USA, Mexico
and others in the Americas, yet the only agreement in Canada that does exist is in the West and includes
Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. This trade agreement is Called The New West Partnership
Trade Agreement (NWPTA).
As the website entrance page says at www.tilma.ca that this agreement ... is a ground-breaking
economic partnership between the Governments of British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan.
Building upon the TILMA, the NWPTA creates Canadas largest inter-provincial free trade zone.
The Agreement has a number of benefits for the three provinces, which include:
Reduced costs for businesses, governments, and consumers.
Streamlined regulations through mutually recognizing or otherwise reconciling unnecessary
differences in standards and regulations.
An enforceable dispute mechanism to ensure that each province lives up to its commitments.

 Enhanced competitiveness through the free flow of goods, services, investment, and workers.
The Agreement came into effect on July 1, 2010, and has been fully implemented since July 1, 2013.
It is sad that all of Canada does not have a free trade inter-provincial zone and Prime Minister Harper
has tried. Harper is constantly stopped by Ontario and Quebec politicians at all levels of government.
Mr. Mulcair, since 1994 you have been elected in some capacity and you have never addressed the
Inter-provincial trade barriers hindering Canada. This is because you were only interested in protecting
your province as a Quebecois.
Your focus has been what you could get for Quebec from the rest of Canada and we are terrified based
on your relegation of the West to the sidelines that you are merely targeting the big job as a Quebecois
and not for all of Canada. We have seen this before with Pierre Elliot Trudeau, Brian Mulroney, Jean
Chretien and Paul Martin.
The Canadian Equalization Program is great for your province and even Ontario, but, it is a redistribution of wealth and that is actually defined as Communism. Marx, Rossseau and Engels believed
that the problem with the Socialism of their day was that it did not deal with economic issues. They
(specifically Marx) proposed that his new (Communist) economic system, which called for redistribution
of wealth, was more equitable.
Why would we write such a radical comment like that? Surely, we have lost all credibility in any argument
that we have put forth by dropping the Communist card?
Well... no and we feel discourse is important. We appreciate knowing where you are coming from and
respect the NDP in debates more than Liberals who try to play both ends against the middle, but, your
views are dangerous.
What Is Communism? According to Encyclopedia Britannica it is: the political and economic doctrine
that aims to replace private property and a profit-based economy with public ownership and all
communal control of at least the major means of production (e.g., mines, mills, and factories) and the
natural resources of a society.
Communism is thus a form of Socialism - a higher and more advanced form, according to its advocates.
Exactly how Communism differs from Socialism has long been a matter of debate, but the distinction
rests largely on the Communists adherence to the revolutionary socialism of Karl Marx.
The goal of socialism is communism.

PS Mr. Mulcair, we will give you until Monday, August 31, 2015 to respond to this. We sincerely are
hoping for progress. If we do feel that we are being relegated to the sidelines and ignored, we will
commence with the following campaign:
1. We will be raising funds from our membership to get involved (up to the limits set by Elections
Canada per riding we have discussed.
2. We will be sending staffers and / or supporters of the ABTC to the riding's in question.
3. We will write a distribute a letter outlining our concerns and appealing to those in the riding's in
question to vote Anyone But NDP based on the comments we are opposing. Our objective in
these aforementioned riding's is a defeat of the NDP and we will work with all opposing
candidates.
