PROJECTS DESIGNED BY OUR GOVERNMENT IN ORDER TO
IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF FILIPINO LIFE, THE NATIONAL NUTRITION
COUNCIL (NNC) EXTENDS ITS FAIR SHARE THROUGH LEADING THE
2015 NUTRITION MONTH CELEBRATION THIS JULY, FOCUSING ON
ADDRESSING ISSUES AFFECTING HEALTH CONDITION BROUGHT BY
OBESITY AND OVERWEIGHT OF CONCERNED INDIVIDUALS.
WE ARE CELEBRATING JULY AS THE NATIONAL NUTRITION
MONTH AS MANDATED BY PRESIDENTIAL DECREE 491, WHICH HAS
BEEN THE BASIS FOR THE CREATION OF NNC IN 1974. WE MUST
COMMEND THE THEN-PRESIDENT FERDINAND EDRALIN MARCOS
WHO HAD VIVIDLY-DEFINED EXECUTIVE POWERS DURING THAT
TIME.

ON THE ACTIVITIES TO BE ORGANIZED AND TO BE CONDUCTED BY
SCHOOLS DURING THIS MONTH-LONG CELEBRATION AND THEMED
TIMBANG IWASTO, SA TAMANG NUTRISYON AT EHERSISYO.
ACCORDING TO THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH, HEART
ATTACK, STROKE AND CANCER REMAIN TO BE THE TOP LEADING
CAUSES OF DEATH IN OUR COUNTRY. AND THIS HAS BEEN
CONTINUOUSLY STRESSED OUT THAT THESE DISEASES ARE
ASSOCIATED WITH OBESITY AND OVERWEIGHT. THIS YEARS

THREE-FOLD

OBJECTIVES;

TO

INCREASE

AWARENESS ON THE ROLE AND IMPORTANCE OF PROPER


NUTRITION AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IN THE PREVENTION OF
OBESITY AND OVERWEIGHT AMONG THE GENERAL PUBLIC, TO
ENCOURAGE FILIPINOS TO MAKE POSITIVE DECISIONS TOWARDS
CONSUMPTION OF HEALTHY DIETS AND BE PHYSICALLY ACTIVE TO
PREVENT NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASES AS A RESULT OF
OBESITY AND OVERWEIGHT AND TO ENCOURAGE COMMUNITIES,
NATIONAL

AND

LOCAL

GOVERNMENTS,

NON-GOVERNMENT

ORGANIZATIONS, PRIVATE SECTOR, MEDIA, THE ACADEME, AND

AND SUPPORTIVE. IT SHOULD PROMOTE THE KIND OF STANDARD
OF LIVING THAT COULD FACILITATE THE PREVENTION OF OBESITY.
TO ATTAIN THIS, AN ENABLING ENVIRONMENT IS NEEDED.
CONSUMERS SHOULD BE INFORMED ABOUT THE NUTRITIONAL

VALUES OF THE FOOD THEY CONSUME. IN ADDITION, THESE


NUTRITIOUS

FOODS

SHOULD

BE

READILY

AVAILABLE

AND

ECONOMICAL.
AS RESPONSIBLE MEMBERS OF THE ACADEMIC COMMUNITY, I
ENCOURAGE THE ADMINISTRATION TO INITIATE ADEQUATE AND
TIMELY INFORMATION OR CONDUCT INFORMATION DRIVE TO LET
THE PEOPLE BE AWARE ABOUT HOW THEY CAN MINIMIZE, IF NOT,
TO PREVENT OBESITY AND OVERWEIGHT AND ENSURE THE
AVAILABILITY OF HEALTHY FOOD OPTIONS IN THE SCHOOL
CANTEENS.

I ALSO WANT TO URGE THE SCHOOL NURSE

TOGETHER WITH THE PHYSICAL EDUCATION INSTRUCTORS TO


INITIATE PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES LIKE ZUMBA DANCE AT LEAST ONCE
A WEEK, CONTINUOUS SPORTS EVENTS AND OTHER ACTIVITIES
THAT COULD PROMOTE FITNESS. AND TO ASCERTAIN THE
SUCCESS OF THE MONTH-LONG CELEBRATION, I ENCOURAGE ALL
TEACHERS,

STUDENTS,

NON-TEACHING

STAFF,

AND

OTHER

MEMBERS OF THIS SCHOOL COMMUNITY TO JOIN THE NATIONAL


CELEBRATION AND BECOME PART OF ANY ACTIVITIY ORGANIZED
BY SEVERAL AGENCIES.
MAY I JUST REITERATE THE TEN KUMAINMENTS DEVELOPED
BY THE TECHNICAL WORKING GROUP LED BY THE FOOD AND
NUTRITION RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF THE DEPARTMENT OF
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY.
1. EAT VARIETY OF FOODS EVERYDAY TO GET NUTRIENTS
NEEDED BY THE BODY.

2. BREASTFED INFANTS EXCLUSIVELY FROM BIRTH UP TO SIX


(6) MONTHS THEN APPROPRIATE COMPLEMENTARY FOODS
WHILE CONTINUING BREASTFEEDING FOR TWO (2) YEARS
AND BEYOND FOR OPTIMUM GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT.
3. EAT MORE VEGETABLES AND FRUITS EVERYDAY TO GET
THE ESSENTIAL VITAMINS, MINERALS AND FIBER FOR
REGULATION OF BODY PROCESSES.
4. CONSUME FISH, LEAN MEAT, POULTRY, EGG, DRIED BEANS
OR NUTS DAILY FOR GROWTH AND REPAIR OF THE BODY
TISSUES.
5. CONSUME MILK, MILK PRODUCTS AND OTHER CALCIUMRICH FOODS, SUCH AS SMALL FISH AND SHELLFISH
EVERYDAY FOR HEALTHY BONES AND TEETH.
