Curriculum Integration: Earth science, incorporating an aspect of nature into the art piece
Objectives:
The students will create a completed work of art using graphite and colored pencils, combining
2 aspects, drawing from life and drawing from imagination, to discuss the competition between
nature and technology.

Materials: Drawing Pencils, 8x10 Paper, Colored Pencils, Pencil Sharpener, Drawing Board, Painters Tape
Procedure:
1. Introduce lesson with Flip Video
a. Drawing pencil types
b. Shade of each pencil and purpose
c. Blocking out shadow shapes
d. Creating a shadow
i. Blending
ii. Gradation
iii. Cross hatching
2. Tell students they will be choosing a section of the school to draw from life
a. Include line
b. Include perspective
c. Include value and shading
3. Have students bring their view-finder with them to find the view they wish to draw
4. Emphasize finding a balance between not enough detail and too much detail (not enough
objects vs. too many objects)
5. While they are drawing, they should be thinking about an aspect of nature they want to
incorporate into their drawing
6. Allow the students an hour to draw and fully render the graphite portion of the piece
7. After an hour, bring everyone back into the classroom and discuss as a class the nature aspects
people want to add to their drawing

8. Go over the use of colored pencils
a. Blending colors
b. Layering colors
c. Saturated/fair colors
9. Explain the contrast between the graphite and the colored pencils and how it acts as a narrative
for the discussion between nature and industry
10. Allow time for students to color their nature aspect
11. Once the drawings are complete, teach how to spray fix a finished work
