METALLIC SEALING SURFACES

Care should be taken to ensure that mating surfaces are free of contamination when unions are
assembled, or leakage may occur.
Prior to assembly the surfaces should be clean, rust free, lightly oiled and undamaged.

SEALS AND SEAL POCKETS

The grooves for Orings and the seal pockets for lip seals should be clean, rust free and
undamaged. Any damage to groove or pocket could affect the integrity of the seal.
Seals should be clean and free from damage. For specific seal care information see leaflet No. M11
Note: Some forms of solvent can damage elastomer seals

NUT AND ACME THREADS

Each size and Fig. Number of union has a unique nut. The nut will carry markings to identify its
Size, Fig. Number and cold working pressure (CWP*). If the item is for sour gas service
(complying with NACE MR-01-75) the letters SG also appear on the nut.
Any damage to the ACME threads on the nut and sub could cause difficulty in making the
connection and in severe cases is dangerous in service. The shoulder of the nut, which is restrained
on the male sub, is a highly stressed area and damage to the mating surfaces or deformation must
be avoided.
*Note: CWP refers to the maximum allowable pressure for the full temperature rating of the
component.

DETACHABLE NUTS
The assembly of Nut, Segments and Circlip should rotate freely on the body of the male end.
Rotation should not be hindered by any corrosion protection system applied to the assembly. If the
Segments become tight on the body, remove the circlip, and detach the Nut and Segments from the
body. Clean the mating surfaces before re-assembly. Care should be taken to keep highly stressed
surface of the Nut shoulder, Segments and Male collar free from damage.

Always check that the circlip is in position. The loss of a circlip can lead to the loss of a segment.
Do not mix and match segments or circlips from other manufactures. Use only Anson Segments
with Anson circlips
Operation without a Segment is dangerous
Replace suspect parts

THREADED CONNECTIONS
Unions can be supplied with female API taper threaded end connections. Different thread forms
can be provided on request. It is important that unions are matched with pipework with the correct
male thread form and that the connection is torqued sufficently to provide a power tight thread
engagment, according to the relevant standard.
Threaded connections are limited in their application by certain API standards and Certifying
Authorities. Anson will be pleased to advise on this matter.

WELDED CONNECTIONS
Butt weld ends of union subs are dimensioned in accordance with ANSI / ASME B16.25 and API
6A where applicable. These subs should only be welded to other equipment which has the
appropriate weld preparation. Weld procedures must meet the regulations which govern the end
use of the equipment.
Socket weld low pressure unions are supplied to customer requirements.
IMPORTANT !!

It is possible for some unions with different Fig. Numbers (working pressure rating) to be
screwed together. These will not make a pressure tight seal and such combinations are highly
DANGEROUS !!!
In particular:

1 fig 602 and 1002 have the same ACME thread

1 figs 602 and 1002 have the same ACME thread
2 fig 602 and 1002 have the same ACME thread

for example Fig 1002 nuts could be used with Fig. 602 subs.

2 Fig. 1502 nut can be screwed onto 2 Fig. 602 or Fig 1002 female subs. Although the ACME
thread diameter is different, the number of threads per inch is the same. This combination of nut
and sub has a very small thread mating overlap and WILL FAIL TO HOLD AT HIGH
PRESSURE.

Similarly, a 2 Fig. 1502 nut fits over a 2 Fig. 602 or 1002 male sub, but the nut shoulder has a
minimal overlap with the shoulder of the male sub. USE OF THIS COMBINATION IS HIGHLY
DANGEROUS.

A 3 Fig. 1502 nut can be installed on a 3 Fig. 602 or 1002 male sub. This will reduce the overlap
between the shoulders of the nut and sub in each case. The 3 Fig. 1502 nut cannot be connected to
the 3 Fig. 602 or Fig. 1002 female subs. THE USE OF 3 FIG. 602 OR FIG. 1002 MALE SUBS
WITH 3 FIG. 1502 NUTS IS DANGEROUS.
Parts of different Fig. Numbers should not be connected together

Anson unions are colour coded (see catalogue) as an aid to safety, but users must initiate safe
assembly and use procedures to safeguard against the above potentially dangerous situations

Maintenance Intervals

WEAR AND CORROSION

These components are subjected to wear and corrosion and a fully documented maintenance
programme is advisable. The frequency of inspection must be decided by the operator, bearing in
mind the service being undertaken by the equipment. Wall thickness checks and visual
examination should be undertaken at suitable intervals to quantify any wear or corrosion.
Anson can provide minimum safe wall thickness figures for any component. These figures will
depend upon the design codes covering the particular use of the product.
Fittings and crossovers can be manufactured in special corrosion resistant materials to order.

SOUR GAS OPERATION (H2S)

All material produced by Anson for sour gas operation complies with the provisions of NACE
MR-01-75 and the component is marked SG.
Most unions are de-rated for sour gas service.

Ensure that only sour gas equipment is used under sour gas conditions.
Do not mix standard and sour gas equipment
Ensure all replacement parts are for the same service as the original equipment
Never use sour gas equipment at standard service pressure rating.
Safe Working Pressure
Components which provide a link between union ends which have different pressure ratings are
always rated at the pressure of the lowest pressure end. This working pressure is stamped on the
part. DO NOT WORK BEYOND THE RATED WORKING PRESSURE. ALWAYS ENSURE
THE CORRECT NUT IS USED.
If in doubt ask. We will be pleased to offer any assistance we can.
