Curatorial Statement
THE BIG PICTURE Weltbilder fr die Zukunft
Ernsthafte Lsungsanstze knnen also kein Wiederherstellen eines
anderen, weil in unserer globalisierten, vernetzten Welt jeder jeden braucht
interdisziplinren Herangehensweise geeignete Rollenbilder liefern knnen.

The Cloud in the Web tells the story of our increasingly networked world
from the first telephone to Facebook & Co. This triumphal narrative is a
technological and social history of the interplay of humans and machines.
As such, human beings and machines are jointly producing the 2012 voestalpine
Klangwolke. Hundreds of firefighters, industrial robots, water cannons,
oarsmen and illuminated carrier pigeons are only a few of this plays
protagonists. Making their international debut will be a swarm of Klangwolke
quadrocopters, four-rotor drone whirlybirds cruising above the audience.
Emitting their light in time to the music consisting in part of the soundcloudminiatures contributed by hundreds of music enthusiasts will be the
Klangwolke ABCs: thousands of individually designed illuminated letters
interlinked via radio receiver and the internet that are combined to form
messages. Theyll blend with downtown Linz high-rises, massive farmhouses
in the outlying countryside and the church atop Linzs Pstlingberg mountain
to form an oversized urban light console.
The history of the Klangwolke began on September 18, 1979 with Anton
Bruckners 8th Symphony resounding through the spacious riverside
park adjacent to the Brucknerhaus in downtown Linz. Quite an
e laborate production for that day and age featured thousands of
balloons and a laser show. Bruckners music was heard by a live
audience of 100,000; lots more were tuned in to the ORF Austrian
Broadcasting Companys simulcast. Thousands accepted the invitation
to place their radio on their windowsill to let the sound cloud waft
across the whole region. The evenings guest of honor came from the
USA: a robot named SPA flown in especially for the first Ars Electronica.
Many years and a wide array of sound clouds later, the time has come
for Ars Electronica itself to produce the voestalpine Klangwolke. And
this is being done by having recourse to the thoroughly modern idea
of the very first Klangwolke and transposing it into the era of cloud
computing and the 21st centurys social media in which networking
and collaboration are the design principles and communication is their
foundation.
As a Cloud in the Web, the 2012 voestalpine Klangwolke is essentially
the work of a collective artistic personality comprised of members of
the public who have gotten actively involved both in designing and
producing this extravaganza and then actually staging it on Saturday,
September 1, when this cloud formation will take shape over Linzs
Donaupark.
Their creative contributionsboth visual (a vast alphabet of illuminated
letters) and acoustic (individually engineered soundcloudminiatures)
constitute a sound & light show that will be one of the absolute highlights
of the evening. Thus, a collective Open Cloud Project consisting of the
assembly and interlinkages of the Klangwolke ABC, the recording and
p resentation of the soundcloudminiatures, and the process of
bringing other works of art to fruition has coalesced both temporally
and spatially about this Cloud in the Web.

KLANGWOLKENMINIATUREN
Acoustically as well, the 2012 voestalpine Klangwolke is a joint effort.
Ars Electronica cordially invites you to produce your own personal soundcloudminiature and to upload it to www.aec.at/klangwolke. There are all
sorts of creative possibilities: melodies, the noise of everyday life, or just
interesting sounds you happen to hear. The
only proviso: these acoustic
events cant be more than a minute long. You can use any tool youve got:
from a smartphone to a home studio. Of course, the ideally equipped
workspace in which to record and produce your soundcloudminiature is
the Ars Electronica Centers new SoundLab.
On Sunday, September 2nd, all submitted soundcloudminiatures will suffuse
downtown Linz via the Klangwolkes 250,000-watt sound system.
All Klangwolke letter designers who just cant delay gratification any longer
can gather on the Ars Electronica Centers Maindeck on September 1st at
5 PM. Everyones invited! With voestalpines own marching band leading
the way, a parade of people and letters will proceed across the Nibelungen
Bridge. Around 6 PM, the Klangwolke caravan converges on the Mobile 1
Atelier on Linzs Main Square, where terpsichorean troops ranging from
hip-hoppers to folk dancers will display their individualize choreographies
in which letters coalesce into words. The best of these performances will be
reprised shortly thereafter before a much larger audience. The groups will
strut their stuff in the main eventthe 2012 voestalpine Klangwolke.

von Klangknstlern wie Matthias Bergsmann (AT), seines Zeichens PrixArs-Electronica-Preistrger in der Kategorie u19 CREATE YOUR WORLD.
Zwischendurch erreicht das Urban Game Missing Character (siehe Seite 73)
hier seinen Hhepunkt. Marco Palewicz (AT), Chris Bruckmayr (AT),
The Picnic in the Cloud, Part II of the 2012 voestalpine Klangwolke, is set for
the day after the big show. Everyones invited to bring snacks and a blanket
to the Donaupark. Thousands of people from Linz, from Upper Austria and
all over the world have been busy producing soundcloudminiaturespieces
of music, sounds, noise, whatever. The best of these personal puffs of
the cloud of sound will resound through the relaxed atmosphere of Linzs
beautiful downtown riverside park via the shows superb sound system. A
big Sound Picnic Blanket will take the place of a stage. The days program
also includes a repeat performance of the previous evenings highlights. The
show begins at 10 AM with soundcloudminiatures arranged in c ategories
both the originals and a remix by sound artist Matthias Bergsmann (AT),
a prizewinner in the Prix Ars Electronicas u19 - CREATE YOUR WORLD
category. The climax of the urban game Missing Character (see page 73)
will serve as a sort of interlude. Marco Palewicz (AT), Chris Bruckmayr (AT),
Maximilian Walch and Michael Kaczorowski (AT) will then continue with live
remixes of the miniatures on into the evening. At 5 PM, FM4 will take over
the controls. Say it loud! is the gist of their message. Prior to the program
theyll then be broadcasting, Lautsprecher (Loudspeaker), theyre inviting
listeners to upload communiqus (maximum length: one minute) to www.
aec.at/klangwolke and fm4.orf.at. The show will be a compilation of these
submissions. The theme is What Ive always wanted to say. And that can
be just about anything: a declaration of love, a line from a favorite song, a
political message, you name it. At 7:30, Berlin Duo HEAVYLISTENING and
their pimped-out rides will generate a low-pressure area (see page 32) as a
lead-in to the Big Concert Night in the Brucknerhaus (see page 33).
Amanogawa will be one of the aesthetic highlights of The Cloud in the
Web. In it, 50,000 Inori Boshifloating LED balls 8.5 cm in diameterwill
be swept downstream by the Danubes current. Constructed especially for
Amanogawa and charged by solar energy, the balls emit a light blue glow
as soon as they come into contact with water. They stand for the diversity
of cultures along the Danube.

This years symposium program is the outcome of an effort to dispense
as much as possible with conventional segregation on the basis of genres
and disciplines, and thereby to really do justice to the festival theme and
the multiplicity of views and perspectives it implies. Accordingly, the
presentations of the Prix prizewinners too will not take place, as usual,
strictly within the context of the Prix Forums, but will instead be integrated
into the Theme Symposium lineup. Consideration of the scientific, artistic
and sociopolitical aspects of the festival theme will dominate the agenda
of the three-day symposium.

groen japanischen Science Center leitet. Sie prsentiert dieses spektakulre
Visualisierungs- und Vermittlungsprojekt gemeinsam mit dem
Architekten Hajime Narukawa (JP), der die Idee von Buckminster Fullers
Dymaxion konsequent weiterentwickelt hat. Die Welt nicht als einen

zeigt das mittlerweile jhrlich stattfindende globale Filmprojekt One
Day on Earth, das uns dessen Initiatoren Brandon Litman (US) und Kyle
Ruddick (US) als Abschluss des ersten Symposiumstages vorstellen.
The afternoon session is entitled Mapping the World. Getting things started
is philosopher Thomas Macho (AT) with a fundamental cultural-historical
survey of the images of the world that humankind has brought forth. Totally
new pictures of the worldhere meaning the whole universewill be the
topic of Lisa Kaltenegger (AT), an astronomer whose field is the discovery
and measurement of planets beyond our solar system. The Tsunagari Project
then shifts attention back to Planet Earth. Mahoro Uchida (JP) of Japans big
Miraikan Science Center heads this spectacular and educational visualization
project, and will present it together with architect Hajime Narukawa (JP),
who has taken Buckminster Fullers Dymaxion idea and developed it further.
The first day of the symposium concludes with a film: One Day on Earth
doesnt depict the world in one big integral overview but rather as a mosaic
of countless subjective glimpses. This global project, which now convenes on
an annual basis, will be presented by its initiators, Brandon Litman (US) and

More and more people highly value living in a city that is responsibly planned
and administered. Be that as it may, those who want to have a say in
how things are have to acquire the pertinent information, which is quite a
daunting task in todays Information Society. Amidst this unmanageable
deluge of data, accountability technologies are creating new possibilities
for a person to look into important political and economic issues that affect
the place in which he/she lives. Examples are free tools for measurement,
visualization and analysis that enable activists to gather and depict data
indispensible to a campaign in connection with, say, noise, environmental
pollution, mobility or corruption. The second session of Sensing Place/
Placing Sense, a symposium about new experimental technologies
applicable to city life, focuses on effective initiatives. One question it raises
is how information has to be prepared in order to be able to trigger change
within governmental agencies.

Ars Electronica Center bernommen.
You dont have to be God to create life. In Deep Space, all it takes is a regular
admission ticket. Codeform is a work by Jon McCormack (AU) who, during
his stint as artist-in-residence at the Ars Electronica Futurelab, also created
Fifty Sisters (see page 45) thats on display in the Lobby. Codeform
transforms any QR code into an artificial life form. A ticket code is scanned
in on site and serves as a digital gene. Deep Space becomes an ecosystem in
which the code morphs into an egg and then an embryo. It grows, matures,
and begins to move. Soon, it ventures forth into the 3D world of Deep Space,
which it explores together with other Codeform creatures. Their lifespan varies
some creatures die after a short time; others undergo steady development
and survive to be part of the next performance. Visitors can return to Deep
Space repeatedly and use their ticket to check out whats become of their
creature. After the festival, Codeform will be an ongoing feature at the
Ars Electronica Center.

akustisch global vernetzte Welt.
(AT) und Tom Lorenz (AT).
Jazz sehr nahen Echoes of the Miraculous von Johannes Berauer (AT).

Electronic music has been a part of Ars Electronica since the festivals very
inception. After all, one of the founding fathers was Hubert Bognermayr
(AT), visionary synthesizer fan, composer and musician. The Prix Ars
Electronica as well has featured computer music right from the start. To
this day, Digital Musics & Sound Art is consistently the category with the
most submissions.
So what more reason do we need to launch a new Festival showcase
dedicated to the musical genres that are part of media arts core: sound
art, radio art, sound sculptures and sound installations. In order to take
advantage of their superb acoustics, the concert halls of the Brucknerhaus
will become tonal spaces for listening sessions, performances, interventions and talks throughout this day.
The lineup of guests coming to commemorate 25 years of Kunstradio
includes Robert Adrian (AT), Sam Auinger (AT), Heidi Grundmann (AT),
Seppo Grndler (AT), Rupert Huber (AT), Josef Klammer (AT), Roberto Paci
Dalo (IT), GX Jupitter Larsen (US), Norbert Math (AT), Elisabeth Schimana
(AT), Andrea Sodomka (AT), Gerfried Stocker (AT), and Elisabeth Zimmermann (AT). Representing the UdKUniversity of the Arts Berlins Sound
Studies program are Alberto de Campo (AT), Peter Cusack (UK), Robert
Henke (DE), Martin Supper (DE), Pheline Binz (DE), Daisuke Ishida (JP),
Anselm Nehls (DE), Carl Schilde (DE), Alois Spth (DE), et al.
On this day, the Klangwolkes spectacular audio infrastructure is being
placed at the disposal of sound artists and their fine tonal structures and
musical textures. This feast for the ears will consist of acoustic highlights
from the 25-year history of Kunstradio.
Winding up the day and the festival will be an evening concert starring
the prizewinners in the Digital Musics and Sound Art category.

Prix Ars Electronica PreistrgerInnen-Konzert
This is the 10th anniversary of the Big Concert Night. Ars Electronica
launched this collaboration with the Brucknerhaus and the Bruckner Orchestra
under Dennis Russell Davies (US/AT) in 2002 to present an invigorating
blend of orchestral music, digital sounds, live electronics and visualizations.
In the spirit of this years festival theme, THE BIG PICTURE, concertgoers
will be treated to wide-angle glimpses of a modern world that is globally
networked acoustically as well.
Fans of auditory creativity can partake of a full-throttle prelude to the
evenings presentations from the Lentos Art Museums plaza. In Tiefdruckgebiet (low pressure area) by HeavyListening (DE) (see page 32), highperformance autos pimped out with mega-bass sound systems are the
instruments of a concerto at the low end of the human hearing range.
Works by a Tibetan yogi inspired Philip Glass (US) to compose his Songs
of Milarepa. The visualizations are the work of Michael Mayr (AT) and Tom
Lorenz (AT).
A visualization by Leonard Wegscheider (AT) will accompany some jazzy
Echoes of the Miraculous by Johannes Berauer (AT).
In her composition Ima Koko (Japanese: here and now), Misato Mochizuki
(JP) proceeds in accordance with the teachings of Buddhism that the cosmos
is contained in a mote of dust and eternity in the blink of an eye. The sound
made by striking a gong is elongated in the extension of time and space
until all the individual parts of this intonation are revealed. Conny Zenk (AT)
complements the tonal universe with a visual one.
Amr Okbas (EG/AT) work Etappe is an effort to come to terms with the
Arab Spring. The rhythm of the daily grind is acoustically put to an end by
an inner voice that cries out for rebellion against the prevailing despotism.
Austrian artist Anna Blume has created a highly appropriate visualization.
Three animated films honored by the Prix Ars Electronica will be the intermezzi punctuating the orchestral pieces. In Countdown, Cline Desrumaux
(FR) takes us on a trip through the cosmos to the music of Apparat. The
City by Dirk Koy / Equipo was made as a music video for the band Five Year
Older. Unnamed Sound Sculpture by Daniel Franke and Cdric Kiefer (both
DE) features an impressive symbiosis of dance, computer animation and
sounds from Machinefabrieks piece Kreukeltape.
This is a Recorded Message is still a highly relevant statement made in
1973 by filmmaker Jean-Thomas Bdard (CA) and composer Alain Clavier
(CA), a critique of the consumption orientation of our times in the form of a
huge montage of hundreds of advertising images.
To round things out, Ars Electronica and radio station 1 are congregating
to celebrate Kunstradios 25th anniversary. Some special acts are offering
congratulatory greetings. High-decibel radio artist and author GX JupitterLarsen is presenting his Loud Luggage/Booming Baggage program. The
Klammer & Grndler Duo (AT), Kunstradio ur-fixtures, will live up to their rep
as pioneers of performative electroacoustic-improvised music. The grand
finale is a live session by the Kunstradio All-Stars starring Robert Adrian
(AT), Sam Auinger (AT), Seppo Grndler (AT), Horst Hrtner (AT), Rupert
Huber (AT), Josef Klammer (AT), Norbert Math (AT), Elisabeth Schimana
(AT), Andrea Sodomka (AT) and Gerfried Stocker (AT).

The BIG PICTURE Cinema screens films that feature literally inimitable images
of the world, and showcase human beings whose work crosses borders in
amazing and inspiring ways and brings to light new ways of seeing things in
the process.
Heaven + Earth + Joe Davis by Peter Sasowsky (US) is a portrait of Joe
Davis (US), a fascinating scientist, researcher and artist who as a matter of
principle ignores all academic boundaries and seamlessly combines artistic
practice with scientific work. Ars Electronica has once again honored him for
an outstanding work (bacterial radio, see page 48) in 2012. His experiments
and achievements have included using the vaginal contractions of ballet
dancers as a means of communicating with aliens in outer space, translating
poetry into DNA, and creating a sculpture to save the world. On October 10,
2010, 19,000 people in 160 countries cinematically documented episodes,
events and moments in their lives and made the footage available to serve
as elements of the largest collaborative film ever made. One Day on Earth
by Kyle Ruddick (US) interweaves the tragedies and triumphs, heartbreaking conflicts and moments of love occurring simultaneously worldwide into
a Big Picture of humankind. In Passage 2011, Christian Schoen (DE)
44

Inside Futurelab
Ars Electronica Center, Infodeck
The show on the Infodeck gives visitors a glimpse at what Futurelab staffers
are currently at work on or have recently completed. The individual projects
being presented can be considered as proxies representative of the formal
and substantive diversity of the Futurelabs work. They make it clear that
transdisciplinary collaboration is a reality lived out and experienced on a daily
basis at the Futurelab, and that this goes way beyond just sampling a few
artistic disciplines. In addition to ZeitRaum [TimeSpace], St(Age) of Participation and Fingermarathon, the exhibition will include works produced in
the context of the Futurelab.Academy at the China Academy of Art.

demonstrates how Google, Facebook and the like are collecting information
about us, and what the telecommunications data retention law that went
into effect in Austria in April really means. Various installations give visitors
hands-on experience in how easy it is to falsify information and news onlineand now quickly you can end up in some dodgy dating site. Visitors
also learn how they can better protect their privacy.

Golden Nica Interactive Art
Timo Toots Memopol-2 installation impressively demonstrates what links
among databanks mean for each and every one of us. After scanning a
users ID, Memopol-2 combs Austrian and international databanks as well
as the internet to harvest data about the user. This information is then
displayed on a large screen to show all the stuff to be had out there.
Mastbe setzenden Kameraeinstellungen tausendfach analysierter Filmklassiker.
Photoshop bearbeitet.
The works of Agnes Meyer-Brandis (DE) always combine poetry and science.
Here, she takes up where The Man in the Moone (1603), Bishop Francis
Godwins tale about a goose-powered lunar expedition, left off. She raised
11 of these big birds, named them after astronauts and established herself
as crew chief. Then she trained them to fly, launched missions, and put
them up in quarters modeled on the Moon itself just like the facility real
astronauts use for training purposes.

The specifications 2.6g 329m/s refer to the weight and speed of a
small-caliber slug that a bullet-proof vest has to be able to withstand.
Since organically produced spider silk is stronger than steel, bullets should
bounce off of it tooprovided its been woven correctly.
Jalila Essadi (NL) subjects this idea to trial by fire with a fabric thats a
blend of spider silk and human skin yielded by transgenic goats.
In the field of synthetic biology, organic building blocks are used as abstractions or models for the production of standardized, functional living parts.
Searching for the Ubiquitous Genetically Engineered Machine demonstrates a potential alternative application of organic building blockstesting

Game Border

bestimmten Choreografie. Die mathematisch berechneten zyklischen
Bewegungen dabei sind von Wellenmustern inspiriert.
An installation visitor entering the space in which Versuch unter Kreisen
(Experiment among Circles) by Collide@CERN prizewinner Bismarck (DE) is
installed initially notices nothing unusual. Suddenly, things start to move.
The suspended lamps begin to swingslowly at first, gradually working up
momentumas if the whole building were being rocked. Each light obeys
a particular choreography, whereby the mathematically computed cyclical
motions were inspired by wave patterns.

Desire of Codes

Seiko Mikamis large installation Desire of Codes demonstrates how the
boundaries between the body of data in the virtual world and the physical
body in the real world are becoming blurred in the context of Information
Society. The nightmarish setting of this interactive work consists of three
parts: a white wall on which 90 insect feeler-like objects with build-in
surveillance cameras are mounted (Ninety Wriggling Wall Units); six giant
robot arms equipped with video cameras and laser projectors hanging from
the ceiling (Six Multi-perspective Search Arms); and a round projection surface
3.5 meters in diameter. This Compound Eye Detector Screen resembles
an insects multifaceted eyes. Visitors become cognizant of being in the
viewfinder of a perfect piece of surveillance machinery. Highly sensitive cameras
and microphones register the slightest movement and sounds beyond the
range of human hearing. Whatever is registered is stored in a high-performance
databank that is the actual core of Desire of Codes. On the large screen,
installation visitors experience the real-time projections of their own images;
these sequences are interspersed by older footage within the system as well
as images from surveillance cameras in public places worldwide.
Desire of Codes is a commissioned work by YCAM//Yamaguchi Center for

Bei u19 CREATE YOUR

Onlinespiel fr Smartphones programmiert. Auerdem wird Radio

because sound propagates well in water, sea creatures down there are

Corrugated cardboard is the material papplab uses for the various delightfully different spaces they create .
This year, papplab is designing the interior of the Mobile 1 Ateliers, the
container in the Festival Village, and, by no means least of all, the
standard letter construction kits for the voestalpine Klangwolke. In this
open lab, you can learn from and with these komical karton kut-ups to
make whole worlds out of cardboard.
They stand by you with helpful words and deeds. Youre sure to have a
blast using a Trotec professional-grade laser cutter. And all the cardboard
youll ever need has been supplied by the nice folks at Smurfit.

Communityparcours
Inherent in THE BIG PICTURE theme is considering things from a wide array
of perspectives. Accordingly, the Community Parcours accentuates diversity
in mediating the encounter with festival content and is designed especially
to appeal to recent immigrants to Linz. German and English wont be the
only languages used on these tours, and the multilingual moderation is
complemented by a multicultural approach to the works and projects on exhibit. The mediators themselves are prominent activists and opinion leaders
in their respective communities. The aim of this program is to reach out to
people from diverse ethnic backgrounds and to maximize accessibility to the
festival on their part. The same goes for those with limited mobility: theres
also a Community Parcours designed for people in wheelchairs.

A guided tour through selected festival exhibitions will be the setting for a
discussion of museological aspects of presenting and mediating the publics
encounters with media- & science-based art. In conversation with artists,
scientists and curators, we will analyze the selected presentation & interaction
strategies. We will also take a hands-on approach to experiencing how
various modes of design affect the way installation visitors perceive and
react to what is on display.
