Windshield Survey

Learning Activity
Summary

Windshield surveys are systematic observations made from a moving vehicle. Walking
surveys are systematic observations made on foot. Either or both can help you better
understand either the community in general or a specific condition or aspect of it.
Windshield surveys are particularly useful when the area you want to observe is large,
and the aspects youre interested in can be seen from the road. A walking survey might
be a better choice when youre seeking to understand things that are harder to see from
a moving vehicle.
Windshield and walking surveys can be used to assess general community needs to
estimate the poverty level, for example or to examine more specific facets of the
communitys physical, social, or economic character.

Educators will act as a guiding force and resource behind students. The teacher will also
need to ensure that the students are doing different communities. Communicates can be
the ones which the student lives, campsites which they vacation, or even workplaces. A
rubric with outlines details will need to be provided.

Time Allotted

The teaching strategy will require the student to observe the community for two hours,
by walking, driving, etc. The student will then spend individualized amount of time
preparing and planning innovative strategy to change or better the community. For
example, if the community has a smoking abundance, developing a creative smoking
cessation program.

Students will need to complete the innovative, creative presentation on how they would
address a health disparity or problem within the community. Each student will be
expected to present their windshield findings and their strategies to the class.
Additionally, each student will need to complete a summative, reflective evaluation of
the experience.

Evaluation of Learning

The students will be completing a presentation of their own choice. They will present
what they learned, and their innovative change for their community.

Teacher Reflection

This exercise allows for nurses completing their RN-BSN to look for innovate strategies
to empower and change their communities. By presenting the information in front of
their peers, students learn from one-another and formulate new ideas.
