air in any space to provide high indoor air quality In UTAR Sungai Long KA Block, there are both: 1)Natural / passive ventilation, and 2)Mechanical ventilation
Natural/Passive ventilationCasement Windows
Casement windows are located throughout the
building
Natural/Passive ventilation- Casement
Windows Are the only source of natural ventilation, since humid climate will result in low comfort levels Results in high energy consumption from forced/mechanical ventilation systems (HVAC) Suggestions: Use water features in, or near the building to engender a sense of coolness Use passive evaporative cooling methods by passing incoming air over or through wetted surfaces. Utilise ceiling fans where appropriate to minimise the need for refrigerated air conditioning
Mechanical Ventilation- HVAC, Air Handlers
Rooftop packaged unit (RTU), is a device used to
regulate and circulate air located on 5th floor RTU is the main source of air-conditioning in UTAR, providing cool and dry air to the inhabitants
Mechanical Ventilation- HVAC, Air
Handlers Is a larger air handler that conditions 100% outside air, and does not recirculate air from the inside of the building Has been in use since opening of KA Block in 2002, incorporating outdated HVAC technology

Mechanical Ventilation- HVAC,Air Handlers
Air outlets throughout the building distribute cool air to the inhabitants, providing increased levels of comfort

concealed air handlers behind walls
Mechanical Ventilation- Analysis of HVAC system
The RTU Is not sustainable because: High energy consumption due to outdated and hence inefficient cooling/heating technology Not regulated; manually controlled, resulting in excessive usage. KA Block is generally cold at all times during the day Suggestions: Switch to a more modern HVAC system, which can include a programmable thermostat, to save energy costs, and be more efficient overall
