hostedmanymajorfootballmatchesincludingthe
1974WorldCupFinalandtheEuro'88Final.It
hostedtheEuropeanCupFinalsof1979,1993and

DesignedbytheGermanarchitectGntherBehnischandtheengineerFreiOtto,thelightweighttent
constructionoftheOlympiastadionwasconsideredrevolutionaryforitstime.[3]Thisincludedlarge
sweepingcanopiesofacrylicglassstabilizedbysteelcablesthatwereusedforthefirsttimeonalarge
scale.TheideawastoimitatetheAlpsandtosetacounterparttothe1936SummerOlympicsinBerlin,
heldduringtheNaziregime.Thesweepingandtransparentcanopywastosymbolizethenew,
democraticandoptimisticGermany.Thisisreflectedintheofficialmotto:"ThecheerfulGames"[4]
("DieHeiterenSpiele").[5]
Construction
ThestadiumwasbuiltbyBilfingerBergerbetween1968to1972inapitmadebybombingsMunich
sufferedduringWorldWarII.Thispitmadeconstructioneasier.[6][7]

FollowingtheOlympics,thestadiumbecamethehomeofFC
BayernMunich.In1979thegroundplayedhosttothe1979
EuropeanCupFinalinwhichNottinghamForestwonthefirstof
theirconsecutiveEuropeanCupsunderBrianClough.
Inthe1990sBayernMunich'srivalsTSV1860Munichmoved
intothestadium.ThetwoteamscoexistedintheOlympiastadion
until2005,whenbothclubsmovedtothepurposebuiltAllianz
Arena.

FinalattheOlympiastadion.

Since2005,itisthehostoftheyearlyairandstylesnowboardevent.
On31December2006,thestadiummadehistoryasbeingthefirstvenuetohosttheTourdeSkicross
countryskiingcompetition.Theindividualsprintevents,heldat1100m,werewonbyNorway'sMarit
Bjrgen(women)andSwitzerland'sChristophEigenmann(men).Thesnowwasmadeinthestadiumby
combiningthehotairwiththecoldrefrigeratedwaterthatcausesthesnowtoactliketheicytypeyou
wouldseeintheAlps.
Itwentunusedinthe2006FIFAWorldCupduetotheAllianzArenabeingthehoststadiuminMunich.
On23to24June2007,thestadiumplayedhosttotheSparEuropeanCup2007,ayearlyathleticsevent
featuringthetop8countriesfromaroundEurope.
TheDTMtouringcarserieshelditsfirststadiumeventtherein2011:aRaceofChampionsstyleevent
whichtookpartoveratwodayperiod,althoughitwasnotachampionshipscoringround.[8]Edoardo
Mortarawonthefirstday,andBrunoSpenglerthesecond.[9][10]Theeventwasrepeatedin2012,butthe
stadiumwithdrewin2013becauseitprovedimpossibletoturnitintoapointsscoringevent.[11]
On17May2012,thegroundplayedhosttothe2012UEFAWomen'sChampionsLeagueFinalinwhich
OlympiqueLyonnaiswontheirsecondconsecutivetrophy.Theattendanceofthatgamewasarecordfor
aUEFAWomen'sChampionsLeagueFinal.On19May2012ithostedthe"PublicViewing"ofthe
2012UEFAChampionsLeagueFinalwhichtookplaceatAllianzArenainMunich.
