projecttostaggertheirstarttimestosuitthedifferentbiological
clocksofchildren,withtenyearoldsstartingat9amand15year
oldsstartingat10am.
Scientistsbelievethatthebodyscircadianrhythm,which
determinessleepwakepatternsover24hourperiods,varies
withachildsageandthatanearlierschoolstarttimeforall
studentsisnotinthebestinterestsofolderchildren.
Theresearchproject,fundedbytheWellcomeTrust,willrecruit
100schoolsaspartofthebiggeststudyyetintotherolethat
schoolstarttimesplayintheeducationandwellbeingof
students,saidPaulKelleyoftheUniversityofOxford.
Thenaturalshiftinthebiologicalclocktolaterinthe24hour
cycleisparticularlyacuteinthe14to24agegroup.Theshiftin
thebiologicalclockcontinuesinlatermiddleage,whenpeople
usuallyreverttothenaturallyearlierstarttimetheyfelt
