Lesson Plan

Learning Area: Visual Arts Topic: Art analysis

Creative Industries: Art (VET industry specific)
The Creative Industries: Art (VET industry specific) course is based on the Visual Arts, Craft and
Design Training Package and provides students with opportunities to achieve national
qualifications under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) and to gain course credit
towards the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE). Achievement of Certificate I
and II in Visual Art and Contemporary Craft and Certificate III in Design Fundamentals will
enable students to develop relevant technical and interpersonal competencies suitable for
employment and further training in the visual art, craft and design industry, as well as skills and
knowledge that are transferable to other industry areas.

Students prior knowledge and experience:

The students will be able to think about and


answer questions about:
analysing their Australian art work,
respond to questions with a personal
responses

purpose in their artwork

contexts about their work and artist.

As this is a small group lesson I will ask


questions to 4 or 5 students about their work
on their particular Australian artist they chose
and why. The lesson objectives will be
achieved if they can answer analytical
questions and discuss purpose and meaning. It
will be simple to monitor student learning as I
will be asking direct questions.

Preparation and Resources:

The art room is already set up in groups so I will choose a group that I can question.
The class will already have their art work out and I can go around and observe and question.
I will have a question sheet that I can work through to ask the students.

Catering for diversity (detail any adjustments considerations for educational/resource adjustments)
If some students do not understand the question I am asking, I can rephrase the question to
make it easier for them. For example if they do not react to What influenced you to choose
this Australian artist? I can ask instead Okay, well what do you like about the artists work?
As I have not gotten to know the class or anyone names as I have a new class of students each
period it is hard to know what levels they are at and how they react to specific questions.

Timing: Learning Experiences:

Introduction: (How will I engage the learners?)

As these students are not the easiest students to work with I will begin to explain to
the year 11 students that I am in the classroom to take a group lesson that is
important for my unit at university and for them to please answer the questions as
best as possible for me to understand their analysis of their Australian artists,
personal responses, meaning and purpose and social, cultural and historical
contexts. This will hopefully engage the students and get them to participate with
me.

Sequence of learning experiences: (What will you do to help the students achieve the
learning objectives? What tasks and activities will the students be involved in to help
achieve the learning objectives?)

After explaining that I will be asking them a few questions about their Australian
artists I will then begin to ask them questions which will evaluate their
understandings of the criteria I mentioned above (analysis of their Australian artists,
personal responses, meaning and purpose and social, cultural and historical
contexts) A few of the questions I will be asking are below:

What influenced you to choose his/her artwork?


What aspects do you like about it?
What materials/technique is used in his/her artwork?
Do you have a favourite piece of art from this artist?
What does this art work interpret?
Is there any social or historical influences?

Lesson conclusion: (How will you summarise the learning and relate it to the lesson
objectives?)

These questions can be summarised and will relate back to the lesson objectives by
the student understanding and being able to answer these questions in confidence.
If the student cannot answer the questions then it will be advised that they do a bit
more research on their Australian artist.

This group lesson went well for some groups but not so well for others.
Some students had not done the work or were absent so it was hard to get answers out of
some of them.
If I could change anything from this lesson it would be to find out about art projects they have
previously done and set questions up regarding that, so I could get a response out of all
students.
