Mr. Martin/Mr.

Pattersons Class
Week of September 14-18
This will be our first full week of school! Hopefully everyone is ready for that! We are still
working hard to practice and use our classroom rules and routines. Please encourage your
child to use STARS behavior at home and at school. Ask them about our class rules. Our
Second Step lesson this week will be focusing attention and listening.
Upcoming Events:
Early Release - 9/23 @ 12:30
First PTA meeting/Pizza Party - 9/30 @ 5:30
If you would like to contact us, you can call the school (778-3529), send in a note, or e-mail
us (kmartin@mtbluersd.org or dpatterson@mtbluersd.org).
Math: We are working on our first math unit, sums and differences to 100. We will continue to
practice all of the skills that we started last week. We will add to ten (10+2, 10+5), practice making
the next ten (if 8+2=10 then 18+2=20), and add to a multiple of ten (20+3, 30+3). Our new concepts
for this week will be adding and subtracting like units (5+2, 25+2, 45+2; 7-2, 27-2, 47-2). Students
are also practicing their addition facts. This would be a great thing to study at home!
Spelling: We are working on consonant clusters br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr, and tr.
Reading: Daily 5 This week we will be working hard on building stamina during our Read to Self
time. Our goall is 30 minutes...as a class we're only at 4 minutes! To help us during Read to Self time
the class brainstormed ideas to help us be more successful. 1) Get started right away 2) Read in
your head, voice level 0 3) Sit in one spot 4) Choose a good spot for you 5) Don't bother your
neighbor 6) Eyes on your book 7) Pick a Good Fit book 8) Read the whole time
Please review this list with your children before they start their reading homework. Thanks!!
Writing: Writing is very difficult for lots of people! This week we will be doing some more journal
writing. You can help by pointing out events and happenings at home that your children can write
about in school...Your family pet, a funny uncle, your weekend, a house project, a trip...
Science: There is no Science as we focus on Social Studies.
Social Studies: Our first unit is about Geography. We didnt get very far last week. This week we
will continue to focus on the similarities and differences between maps and globes. Well also learn
about towns, counties, states, countries, and continents. We will hopefully use Google Earth to
provide some perspective on size comparisons.
Vocabulary: Stamina-to remain active for a long period of time
This weeks focus is on Stamina. We are using stamina in our Daily 5 program all year. The
students are building their stamina for Read to Self time. How do your children use stamina at
home? Compare their stamina for some of their favorite activities and encourage and help them
build up their reading stamina!
