DIP PRONUNCIATION CLASSES

In your pronunciation class, you will practice making the sounds of English. You will learn
how to move your mouth to pronounce more clearly. You will also practice common patterns
of stress and intonation. You will listen to real English speakers and practice the sounds in
the context of words and sentences. You will engage in dialogue practice, and you might be
asked to give a presentation.
This class will help people understand you better in New York City and beyond.
What will I learn in this class?
The goal of this class is to help you become aware of the sound system of American English.

By becoming more aware of the sounds of American English, you will improve the clarity of
your speaking and your listening comprehension skills.
What are the requirements for this class?
Enthusiastic participation in class is the most important requirement. To improve your
pronunciation, you must practice, practice, practice. This class requires significant group and
pair work and you are expected to support your classmates. There will be two group
presentations and periodic Google Voice assignments.
Materials:
-Notebook and pen
-Folder for all class handouts
-Class Website: http://telcpronunciationfall2015.weebly.com
-A small mirror is helpful for seeing the shapes your mouth is making
How will I be evaluated?
Throughout the semester, I will be monitoring your participation and providing informal
feedback. You will receive formal feedback on your two presentations and your Google Voice
assignments.
How can I go to the next level?
If you show enough improvement in your reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, you
will move to a higher level. To show your teachers that your English is ready for the next
level, you must participate in class, do your class work and homework, and pass your final
writing exam.
What else do I need to know about class?
You must
-

attend class and arrive on time.

If you arrive between 10 and 30 minutes late, you will be marked LATE
If you arrive more than 30 minutes late, you will be marked ABSENT
If you are late three times, it will count as one absence

If you attend at least 80% of classes, you will receive a certificate at the end of the
semester. A student with consistently poor attendance may be asked to leave the program.
If you miss a class, do not email me with questions. Instead, check the class website and
exchange contact info with two other students and find out what was covered, if there were
any handouts distributed and what was assigned for homework. It is your responsibility.
You are responsible for your learning. If you want to improve your English, you should
Attend every class and do all of your homework.
Speak only English during class.
Turn your cell phone off during class.
Do your own work. Write in your own words. Do not plagiarize.

See your teacher if you have questions.
