Focusing on Results and What Really Matters
Components of effective instruction emerge across
John Hattie and Robert Marzanos work as having
some of the highest influence on student learning.
Effective instruction is also the cornerstone of highquality Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS)
framework that is designed to meet the needs of the
continuum of learners within the school setting. This
3-hour session will focus on these components of
effective instruction tying research and best practice
together.

Description Description
This will be a hands-on session featuring ways to use digital
tools to enhance literacy at all levels. I will highlight Google
tools as well as other tools for creating authentic reading and
writing experiences for students while still meeting the
expectations of the CCSS and MAISA units.

LLI is an intervention system that is intended to be short term

and intensive so that individual needs may be accommodated
in a small-group Setting. Lessons are supplemental to
classroom instruction and incorporates all areas of literacy. This
system aids in the acceleration of student growth to help catch
them up to the expected grade level. We will be showing you
both the Upper and Lower Elementary systems, so you will
gain a better understanding of how these interventions work in
combination with your classroom teaching.
Math "fluency" has been a thorn in the side of many
elementary teachers for far too long. It's time to dispel the
myths surrounding fact fluency and truly investigate what this
concept means. We will be looking at the scaffolding of skills
necessary for a student to become truly fluent in math
operations, while sharing activities to help bolster their
confidence. Attendees of this session will leave with an
understanding that fact fluency is not Rocket (Math) Science.
Come and play in the water. This session will be a hands-on
inquiry based experience. NASA missions collect data about
the global water cycle. The GLOBE water studies teacher
guides are all trans-disciplinary and free. Storybooks, activities
and resources can be downloaded without any copyright. The
activities promote problem solving, communication skills and
teamwork while engaging the students in learning that is both
fun and relevant to their everyday lives.

necessary for a student to become truly fluent in math

During this 60-minute activity, participants will create their
own Martian using craft materials and UV beads. They will
explore how UV radiation from the Sun can affect living things,
comparing conditions on Earth and Mars, and then discuss
ways in which organisms may protect themselves from UV
radiation. They will then take part in a Mars Creature
Challenge, where they will change their creature to help it
survive harsh UV conditions like on Mars. They will then test
their Mars creatures by subjecting them to different
environmental conditions to see how well they survive in a
Martian environment. This investigation will explore shelter
and protection as one of lifes requirements and how Earths
atmosphere protects life from harmful UV radiation.
Need to input data for DIBELS? Not sure how to do it? Come

Kim Rinehart, Manistee ISD

Description Description
In this session, English teachers will be sharing some of their
"best" lessons with the group. Teachers should bring enough
copies so that each district can leave with resources to use in
their classrooms. The intention of this session is for teachers to
gain ideas/lessons from other teachers in the English field,
creating a network for each other. Tiered lessons, unique
approaches to grammar, ways to help students through the
writing process, and kinesthetic activities are ideas of lessons
that could be shared.
Teaching math has changed over the years. How are you doing
at keeping up with it? Perhaps you are relatively new to the
field. Do you have any fresh ideas? There sure is a lot of tech
out there. Does that make the "old ways" of doing things
obsolete? Let's get together and debrief, commiserate,
encourage, and collaborate. I'm sure we will leave with a few
more tools and strategies then we came in with. Along with a
fresh dose of enthusiasm for the best subject taught in schools
today!
It would be helpful, but not necessary, if you brought your own
device to view your Digits account. Discussion topics will
include: what seems to be working great, what seems to need
some work, assessments, intervention lessons, etc in our
classrooms...
New this year: Performance tasks Q/A pertaining to using
Digits in the classroom. If you have any specific questions,
please email Dan or Holly prior to November 2nd and we'll try
to get an answer ready for you.
Let's learn from each other! For this session teachers will bring
an idea, topic, or question they wish to share or discuss with
colleagues. The agenda will be developed on the spot based on
the participants and their desired topics. Each attendee will be
9

responsible for presenting/facilitating their topic. This could

include a short presentation followed by discussion, a topic or
question posed followed by discussion, or a demo or show &
tell that might be interesting for colleagues, etc. The length of
each presentation will be determined by the number of
participants.

In this session you will learn practical ways to integrate Google

will be answered: What type of assignments can you use?
Where do you find the best resources? Do students really like
it?
This session will give you a brief overview of the new Illuminate
Data and Assessment Management System that your school
has access to (Illuminate is the new Data Director). It will focus
primarily on teachers learning to use the system to create
different types of classroom assessments ranging from on the
fly assessments, manual assessments, and quick item-bank

your tests online, or use the new scanning feature called

Are pupils learning enough, and learning it well in secondary

school classrooms and how can you tell? Can schools and
teachers not only measure the progress made by pupils, but
also identify their learning needs and respond to them? This
session explores Formative Assessment in the secondary
classroom.
In this session the presenter will discuss one method and then
attendees will be given an opportunity to share any ideas that
they have on the topic. The intent is for this to be a hybrid
between a presentation and a round table format. The topics
that will be discussed include lifting progressions for core lifts,
weight room safety, periodization, motivation, lifting routine
design, flexibility, and warm-up drills for quick feet, agility, and
speed.
Tracking and proving student growth may seem difficult for
performance-based subjects like art. Knowing that our teacher
evaluations are closely tied to our ability to show growth can be
extremely stressful, but the process doesn't have to be
overwhelming! During this session, I will share some basic
types of student growth data that can be collected as well as
samples of tools to make tracking growth clear and simple.
Bring any current rubrics, student learning objectives or growth
models to share, discuss and edit during the session.
If your district has adopted Marzano's scales and you need a
place to work on them, this "Bring your Own Device" session is
the time! With no presentation, roll up your sleeves and get

teachers and students!
Self-Regulation is the ability to manage one's own emotions,
behaviors and attention in a socially acceptable manner and is
a primary factor in learning, relationships and well being. The
ability to self-regulate is a key indicator of kindergarten
readiness. In this workshop you will learn about typical as well
as atypical development of self-regulatory behavior, and will
learn ways to foster and directly teach self-regulation skills.

Tying it all Together: Preschool

Planning and Recall
Jennifer VanderLugt, NMCAA

I am an avid user of technology in the classroom and believe

that it can be used in developmentally appropriate ways to
stimulate learning in all areas of development for children - I
work with preschoolers. With supervision, it keeps them
engaged and yearning to learn more. It also is very beneficial
and convenient when used to document observations and
complete forms. My wish is to remove any reluctance staff may
have in utilizing technology and replace it with an excitement
to incorporate it for their benefit.
Objectives of the training:
Define the five essential domains of school readiness.
Discuss the critical importance of social & emotional
development in school readiness.
Become more familiar with what skills children need to
be successful in Kindergarten across all five essential
domains Understand the Kindergarten entry
requirements for the State of Michigan.
We will share some fun and successful strategies and ideas for
how we intentionally plan and implement planning and recall
experiences everyday. We will also take a look at how we tie it
all together using Teaching Strategies GOLD, Creative
Curriculum, and PQA expectations.
